Clancy Trial Day 6

Absent an objection from the mod team, I think I’m going to make a new thread for each day of this trial because my other thread has blown up.

Apparently I am not the only attorney following this case. And I’m grateful for the opportunity to escape the civilian comment sections of FB/Youtube through this sub… so:

What are the takeaways from Day 6?

I haven’t been able to tune in as much today, but I was surprised to see a blood spatter expert testifying. Did we not determine that was bunk science a few years ago? Or was it just one expert discredited who had testified in a ton of cases? I’ve personally never had a trial with any blood spatter analysis.

Is anyone else watching the Clancy trial?

I am not one of those people who is tuned in to CourtTV, ever, but this case has really drawn me in due to some unfortunate parallels with my own family.

Is anyone else watching this one? I’d love to hear the reactions of other legal professionals on this. The public commentary is maddening.

She landed on her head. The dropping from the window theory will be disproven by her injuries.

In openings, her specific spinal injuries are described as a C1 “Jefferson” fracture in addition to the catastrophic thoracic region injury.

You typically get a C1 fracture from direct downward pressure on the top of the head. You do not get this type of injury landing feet first or landing on your back. It’s common with diving in shallow water or equestrians who suffer rotational falls over a jump.

The thoracic spine injury is likely the one that caused her paralysis, as the T spine is the middle of the back. This is probably from the compression force of hitting the ground, not landing directly on her back. I unfortunately have a similar T spine injury from landing on my pelvis (which also fractured) at a high rate of speed. The landing force shot through my spine from the point of impact and burst 3 discs, fracturing the surrounding vertebra. Thankfully my exploded discs did not paralyze me. But just sharing for perspective—a T spine injury does not mean landing on your back.

This will be explained in greater detail when we get to the medical experts, I am sure. But I am confident at this stage that the “dangling from the window sill” theory is bust.

My biggest Jeopardy! pet peeve…

I just found a contestant quirk in an old run of wins that is driving me batty: people who format EVERY response as “What is _____?”

Even if it’s a person!

*What is* George W. Bush?

*What is* Robert Frost?

*What is* Jennifer Lopez?

Is this more common than I realize, and I’ve only just noticed it? Lol

Maryland C&F Interview -- what to expect

Already barred in another state but there is a high chance we move to MD in the next 2 years, so I am transferring my score. My first C&F for my home state was incredibly informal; we chatted about our mutual hobby outside work. I have no prior legal issues aside from speeding/parking tickets 5+ years old.

  • How long should I expect the interview to last? and
  • How long after the interview might I be sworn in?

Appts to see inmates

Does your jail require notice to see inmates? I sometimes can’t get in to see a client for over 48 hours. I’m often denied the opportunity to see a client at all before court because they were appointed or arrested too close to court date. It’s getting really frustrating.

We have asked to just have a set time, maybe 1.5-2hr per week blocked off and then give them a list of who we need day-of but they “don’t have the personnel.”

Brutal sentencing this week

Was my first. Eligible for diversion. Denied. Eligible for probation. Denied. State asked for X years to serve, Judge sentenced them to more, the max sentence.

Do I need to just get used to fucking losing? Is that the job?

How do *you* use DefenderData?

It seems to be the most common software option for PD offices. So I want to ask this question--how are you using it in your day to day?

Personally I hate the thing but maybe I'm not using it to its full potential.

Low key bar that takes reservations for tables

Basically the title. Coming in from Cookeville for a friends 21st, and she is not a Broadway type. Think cocktail bars or speakeasies.

He’s got a little over $20k from working for them for years. Then the a$$holes laid him off. We would like to buy a house at some point, so selling is tempting. But I can also easily see that this is their worst year in, well, years.

I don’t know much about stocks, but traditional knowledge is buy low, sell high.

Problem is my husband can see it getting much worse under the current CEO.

Thoughts?

Edit: We are selling. Thanks all.
