In A Housing Predicament...

hi all,

to make a long story short, i (26f) attempted to move out of my childhood home a few weeks ago. for the first two weeks, i was crying nonstop and became quite depressed. i was speaking to friends, family, and my therapist almost daily because i couldn't be alone.

i returned home for two weeks while still paying rent on the other apartment to recover and to complete my final exams (i'm in grad school with no income), in a better headspace.

now that finals are done, i need to make a decision about the apartment. do i break the lease and move home, break the lease and search for an apartment with a childhood friend, or go back to the apartment and try to be alone?

i went to the apartment today to take my therapy call and i felt fine, but then i had a weird interaction with a neighbor on my floor, and i don't want to go back, but i also crave a level of independence. and it's not like i haven't lived away from home before. i did in college and for a few months post-grad.

i don't know if i'm looking for reasons to leave or what to do about this situation, in general. any/all advice is helpful, especially if you have been in a similar situation. thanks in advance!

Have You Ever Lived Alone and Was It Worth It?

long story short - i am a 27f who just moved out of my childhood/family home to live alone. i am in the throws of a deep depression, crying constantly, and can’t remember how i ever got out of these episodes in the past. i have a therapist and a psychiatrist who are both aware and working to help me before anyone gets too concerned.

i’m wondering if living alone is for me, at this stage or at any stage. and wanted to hear from people who have maybe never lived alone, or who live alone and love it.

i don’t know if i need to be around my parents constantly and live with them forever, or if i just need to have someone to come home to.

any/all advice is greatly appreciated.

Me Again - Really Struggling With Living Alone

i posted here the other day, but i recently moved out of my parents'/childhood home. and when i say recently, i mean i've only spent five nights in my new place.

i am really struggling with this move. i moved out immediately post-grad of my first degree, but chose to sublet after five months due to a toxic roommate situation. since then (that was three years ago), i have lived at home with my parents, in my childhood bedroom.

since being in this new place, i am crying off and on, and at times, nonstop. sometimes i force myself to sit in the silence and just deal with the pain and the pit in my chest, but its so hard.

i am reaching out to here ask if it ever gets better? and what things can i do to make living alone better?

my brain is also doing the whole anticipatory grief thing where i'm trying to predict how i'll feel when my parents, who i truly love and adore, pass away.

i really feel like i will never be okay again. and i do have a therapist and i am medicated. i don't know what any of these feelings mean. reading other threads in this subreddit helps, but only momentarily.

any/all advice on navigating this time is greatly appreciated. thank you in advance.

Breaking A Lease One Month In, Co-Op

to make a long story short, i am one month in to a lease in a co-op. it is my first time living alone and my mental health is the worst it’s ever been.

i am unable to eat, sleep, and concentrate on my day to day activities. at this point, i feel it is in my best interest to move back home and focus on therapy until i am back to my baseline.

i was wondering if anyone has had experience in breaking a lease and what the process for that typically looks like? i’m not sure what to say to the brokers (they are my only point of contact aside from the building’s super).

i have only broken a lease once, and it was in march of 2020 when things were beginning to shut down for covid. our landlord was happy to let us go without any fees or penalty. any/all advice would be helpful. thank you.

I Really Don’t Think I Can Do This - Living Alone For The First Time

title says it all, but last month i (27f) made the decision to move out of my parents' home. we live in a major city -- the same city and apartment that i grew up in. i am in a rigorous graduate school program in this city, and decided to move out due to needing a more quiet space to study and wanting a taste of what it is like to live alone.

i officially spent my first night in my apartment alone last night, and am already having regrets. i miss the comfort of my parents' apartment and my dog, and find that i am on the verge of tears at any moment, especially when it is quiet in my new place.

for those who moved out of their parents home a bit later in life, how did you adjust? i also am feeling a bit ridiculous because this new apartment is only about 12 blocks away from my childhood home and my parents are helping out with rent and expenses a lot. should i have waited until my program is done in a year (also conveniently when my lease ends)? how do i make this living situation feel like home?

any/all advice is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Coping With Moving Out of Childhood Home at 27

long story short, i (27f) decided to move out of my parents home. we all live in a major city. i am now 10 blocks away from my childhood home, but still feeling like i moved countries or cities away from them.

i am very close to my parents and love them dearly. i am currently in a very difficult graduate school program that ends right about when my new lease end (in a year). i decided to move out because i felt like it was time, and i found myself needing more peace and quiet for studying than my family home could provide.

nevertheless, things at home have been *so good* lately. everyone’s routines seem to suddenly fit each other and there’s little to no arguing like there was before.

i have only spent one night in my new space and am finding myself missing the comfort and familiarity of home. should i have waited to move out until next year / after graduation, or is this a good push for my normally anxious, homebody self?

if anyone has been in a similar situation please share how you got through this. any/all advice is greatly appreciated, i know this is a bit of ramble.

Mini Fridge?! Can’t Decide Between Two Apartments

title says it all but i am a full time graduate student who is in the application process for two apartments.

one is a beautiful studio with a full kitchen, a bar counter, walk in closet, laundry in building + doorman. the only downside is that the owner is insistent on keeping some (multiple) VERY VERY large mirrors (one takes up an entire wall), paintings, and all furniture in the apartment as is. in terms of aesthetics, ours do not match, but the space is nice. the broker described it as a “byob - bring your own bed” situation, as that is the only furniture that would need to be purchased. (25 min commute to school).

the second apartment is much smaller. the kitchen has a mini fridge, a four top stove, and an oven with room on the counter for a microwave or a toaster, if desired. it looks like it’s a dorm room, bathroom is a bit interesting in terms of layout, but has gorgeous sunlight and roof access with laundry in building and a doorman. (35 min commute to school).

Both have full grocery stores across the street with the second having better access to the subway/trains, I will be commuting by bus most of the time.

i would only be in either for a year, as my program is a year long. based on what is normal for nyc, is there any advice on what i should do or pick if approved for both? if anyone has lived in an apartment with a mini fridge, is this something you found to be difficult? thanks in advance.
