I want my Diet Dr. Pepper

For those of you who are buying Dr. Pete’s or Diet Dr. Pete’s, I think we can all agree that it’s better than having a regular cola or Pepsi, but it’s just not the same.

To that end, I am hoping if enough people request genuine Dr. Pepper syrups available in consumer packaging and include this phrase: “Please record this as a consumer product request rather than a product-availability inquiry,” then we might be able to get our genuine Dr. Pepper flavors for our SodaStreams.

Here is the link.

WIBTA: Mom’s Unresponsive Caretaker

My mother has a caretaker, “Suzanna,” who is taking some PTO, but she’s got this habit of asking for her time off the day before she wants to go somewhere or asking my wife or I if we’re doing something on a evening we’re in town (we live about five hours away), then disappearing for hours if we tell her we don’t have plans.

On one occasion, she went to get a manicure while I was at my mother’s house, and because she was gone for so long, I ended up being late picking my wife up from her father’s house.

Getting to the relevant situation, two weeks ago, Suzanna asked for a couple of weeks off, per my request during my last visit into town. About a week ago, I offered to drop her off at a train or bus station, so she could get to where she needed to go. She never responded, so I figured she made other arrangements.

Today, I drove into town, so my son would be able to take care of my mother while Suzanna is out of town. When I got to my mom’s house, Suzanna hadn’t made any arrangements, and figured I would drive an hour out of my way to take her to an airport.

WIBTA if I told her that since she didn’t answer me in a timely fashion, adding two hours to my drive is an unreasonable ask?

I’m assuming I would be if I agreed to take her to the airport and rescinded the offer or asked her to pick a location closer to my travel route.

UPDATE: Suzanna, recognizing that I’m going to be driving more than 12 hours before her mother gets to the airport, has agreed to a spot closer to my route, so the problem is resolved.

The Doctor Has Spoken

I used this flair because of the level of sadness I have about this. A liver specialist sent me home with a fatty liver diet, and the info sheet specifically said one serving of red meat a week. My wife and I love steaks. She’s convinced I make a better steak than anyone. I’m a big fan of Porterhouses and Ribeyes. Now I’m going to have to switch over to sirloin.

Thing is, I have ignored this cut of meat up to now, and now I need to make it my primary cut (unless any of you fine folks have another lean and flavorful cut to recommend). What can I do to maximize the positive qualities of a sirloin?

Zarzuela (the food)

I’m looking for a recipe for this Spanish/Catalunyan dish. Hopefully, something someone’s abuela passed down.

Zarzuela

To my Spanish (specifically Catalunyan) friends, I would appreciate a Zarzuela recipe, especially if it’s a recipe which comes from a grandmother’s recipe book.

Here are some warnings:

  1. People who drive here will experience occasional drivers who do unsafe things because their lack of patience causes them to do things which are either unsafe or just annoying. I was making a legal U-Turn because I missed the parking lot entrance (yeah, I’m dumb like that sometimes), and this Audi SUV comes in from the wrong lane to make a right turn into my lane, as I’ve got the right of way (they basically ran a red light). Then you’ve got people driving illegally so they can merge farther ahead in the line (I loathe people who cut in line).

  2. Everything is overpriced. I paid $4.50 for a can of Diet Pepsi because I was unwilling to pay $6 for a bottle of water. The giant baby bottles and other big drink options are lightly flavored sugar water. You might as well go get some sugar cane juice.

  3. It’s crowded, and people don’t watch where they’re walking.

The good stuff:

  1. The food I had tasted wonderful.
  2. Everyone seemed generally friendly.
  3. There was live music.
  4. People watching was great
  5. There’s a decent amount of variety.
  6. There are water stations where a person can fill a container for free.

Recommendations:

  1. Go with a large group and buy shareables, so everyone gets to try more stuff.
  2. Some of the add-ons are worth the extra money. There’s a wonton booth that offers noodles to soak up the sauce after you’ve eaten the wontons, and that was fantastic.
  3. Use a rideshare to get to and from the event instead of parking at Del Mar.
  4. Bring wet wipes.
  5. Don’t wear anything you think might get stained.
