MLTs in Canada, can you advice on the job market for a new grad MLT in Alberta?

Hello!

So I recently got admitted to an MLT program at the UofA. I applied to both SAIT and NAIT but got waitlisted at both. I'm planning of going for this program and after 3 years of school I can register and practice as an MLT. And I don't want to be in Edmonton and want to come back home to Calgary.

I was wondering how's the job market in Calgary for new grad MLTs at APL operated sites in the city? are there lots of open positions when a new cohort graduates? or is there little demand in the city? I heard there weren't that many jobs in Calgary in the last few years, has the situation changed now? I'll be graduating in 2029.

UofA cohort is about 40 students, NAIT is 48 students and SAIT is 58 students, I believe that lot of the NAIT and UofA cohort will remain in Northern AB, would it be really hard to find a position with APL after the program in Calgary? Especially since I'd be doing my practicums in Edmonton?

Thanks so much!

How the job market for MLTs in Calgary?

Hello!

So I recently got admitted to an MLT program at the UofA. I applied to both SAIT and NAIT but got waitlisted at both. SAIT was my top choice but apparently my PSEA wasn't that competitive so I got waitlisted. I'm planning of going for this program at the UofA and after 3 years of school I can register and practice as an MLT. And I don't want to be in Edmonton and want to come back home to Calgary. I did my undergrad at UofA too so I've been in Edmonton long enough.

I was wondering how's the job market in Calgary for new grad MLTs at APL operated sites in the city? are there lots of open positions when a new cohort graduates? or is there little demand in the city? Questions for students in the BSc Med Lab Sciences program

Hi, I got accepted into the MLS program for Fall 2026. I have just completed my BSc General Sciences in BioSci. for both who just got admitted and are currently in the program, I have couple of questions for you guys.

  1. How is the workload of the program? is it very intense? is there a minimum pass mark for each class?

  2. how many hours of studying do you have to do for each class after the lecture/lab?

  3. is it possible to keep a part time job at all in the first year?

  4. How much was your first year tuition? including fees, medical and dental insurance, but excluding textbooks. I plan to apply for Student Aid and for the UofA supplementary bursary to help cover the costs.

  5. Were you able to get Student Aid for MLS if you already got student loans for your undergrad?

  6. Are you enjoying the program?

  7. I will be 29-30 when graduating, I started my undergrad at 21 and starting MLS at 27, are there people of similar age in the program or is it mainly younger students of 19-21 years old?

I know those are a lot of questions, but I would appreciate any help.

Thanks so much.

I had my week 3 performance review and it was not good. Am I being terminated? (CAN)

I just started working at Mcds just three weeks ago this is my first job and its been two weeks from my training. I had the week three progress evaluation and performance review yesterday and it was very bad to say the least. I'm still pretty slow and I still need to be told what needs to be done my swing managers. Because of my lack of speed, one of the swing managers are also pretty rude to me, he always constantly yells at me and yesterday when I was doing the grill, I tried to look at the charts on UHC to figure out how many patties should I put down, he just grabbed me by my shoulder and kind of shoved me towards the cooler and shouted at me to put two trays of regs down. It takes me bit of time to figure out the math to drop how many patties, when they say half tray reg left, depending on the time of the day. He's very impatient with me. which I understand is also partially my fault.

My shift manager told me that I 'Lack initiative' and I 'Lack a sense of urgency'. She said after two weeks from training I still work like I just finished training today. I was also unable to fully complete the training as well, because on the day I was supposed to learn assembling and finishing, I had a seizure 1/4 way into the shift and I was taken to the hospital. So my manger said she's not using assembly and finishing part of my training in my reviews but my speed on the grill is abysmal, which is very true. I was also been told that I take way too much time on tasks, my manger wanted me to do the garbage in 30mins but it took me 45mins because the both recycling bins were nearly full so I had to physically make space for all the cardboard boxes on my garbage cart so she was understanding why it took me bit longer than what she expected me for it to take.

She said she's gonna retrain me on service from next week to see how I'd perform there and decide what to do with me from there on. My probation period is 3 months and I'm nearly one month in and I don't know if I'd pass probation. I heard its pretty hard to get fired from Mcds but at this point I'm not even sure of it anymore.

Am I being fired? Can I resign before they fire me so it would not look as bad in a future background check?

how did you improve your speed once you started in the kitchen? how long did it take for you to get to the speed of your fellow co workers? (CAN)

So I started about two weeks ago as a crew member in the kitchen. I have not worked before and my speed is pretty slow, and I've been told that I'm slowing down the entire kitchen. I'm also still getting my self familiarised with their commands, like 1 1/2 crispy left -> I put three crispies down, 1 1/2 trays of junior left -> I put two trays of juinor down. But I still don't know how to figure out the nuggets math. the chart says 120 pieces at 3pm and such, I just keep putting two trays down once they run out 1.5 trays.

How did you get upto speed?

please and thanks!

Did I make a mistake by turning down a unionised supermarket job?

So I got a part time job at Mcds last month, and I really don't like it. I've not worked before so I'm naturally slow and my co-workers and managers are constantly yelling at me because my lack of speed. Can't wait to leave. So I've been applying to all sorts of other places and on Friday I interviewed for a cashier position at Save-On-Foods, the manager was really nice and she said she really liked my interview but because other candidates had 7 days open availability she said she can't offer the job to me at this moment, this was on Saturday afternoon. on later in the evening on that same day she called again and said she can offer me a position as a produce clerk, I accepted it and completed the sterling background check, but then I was told all Save-On-Foods positions are unionised and you can only change your availability three times per calendar year. I felt its a bit off and that I'm starting at $15/hr and on top of tax EI, CPP I've to pay union dues as well, so I phoned the store and turned the offer down yesterday. Idk I feel like I made a terrible mistake. I don't have anything else lined up and I don't like working at Mcds anymore.

How to deal with a rude swing manager? (CAN)

I started working at an Alberta, Canada location two weeks ago, and I have not worked in my life, and I'm naturally slow at work but am learning fast. I typically operate the CFM and all other staff members are understanding of my speed but this one particular manager is extremely rude and obnoxious and always yell at me saying that I'm holding the entire line hostage and slowing everything down. I don't even feel like going to my shift when he's the swing manager.

Should I let GM know? or call corporate?

did you also notice that RBC removed their ATM from the very back end of the HUB Mall?

I went to HUB Mall to take some cash out today but saw that the branch was closed, then I walked all the way to the end where they have another ATM, only to find out they've removed it lol.

How fast you have seen people quit after being hired? (CAN)

I'm aware mcdonalds has a very high turnover, and I've been working two days rn and finding the kitchen to be very hard.

I was doing fries and the deep fryer wasnt that bad but the place they store freshly done fries under that bright light thing is so unbearably hot to work around. I was determined to go to this job whole summer but I don't know how long could I keep up, because I'm getting headaches due to the intense heat in the kitchen.

How fast have you seen employees quitting in Canada?

is working at Tim Hortons easier than McDonalds?

I just started working at mcds the service is fine but the kitchen is brutal ngl. Because Mcds menu contains fries and chicken patties that are deep fried, the kitchen is unbearably hot and It's giving me some bad migraines after work. is the Tim's kitchen just as hot/intense? Since Tims doesn't have a deep fried menu, rather a baked goods menu is it easier to work at Tims?

I don't know if I can make it to the mcds job much longer, I thought it I'd do it for the whole summer but its becoming very unbearable :(
