Podcast: It's Beyond the Food re: Intuitive Eating

Has anyone listened to this episode of It's Beyond The Food: Non-Diet Health Coaching, ep 492, out Oct 1. With Elyse Resch, the co-author of the Intuitive Eating book?

I loved that book, but this episode is disappointing. I get that the podcast host is anti-GLP1, but it's really disappointing to hear her and Elyse talking about them with such pity dripping from their voices "they take away hunger, they take away pleasure from foods, it's just so sad."

I feel like they haven't actually talked to anyone who takes these and still has "normal" hunger and fullness cues; who still gets pleasure from food; whose Starving Victorian Orphan that has been screaming and crying in her head for years, no matter how much "unconditional permission" she gave it to eat, finally feels full.

It sort of makes me feel like an author of a book on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy going on a podcast and speaking with pity about people taking anti-anxiety medications because it means they can't feel their hearts beating out of their chests anymore, or feel sickening physical sensations.

Like, yes, the techniques in your book are helpful, but also there are times when meds are needed because someones nervous system or genetics are different than yours, and you don't need to feel pity for them, you could actually feel happy for them because they are more able to use the techniques you write about without it taking every ounce of their energy and brain power.

one week of not tracking!

I realized a couple of weeks ago that tracking my food intake was making me feel crazy and was preventing me from listening to my body, while simultaneously making me feel like if I stopped doing it I would lose complete control (of what, I'm not sure).

At first I tried logging at the end of the day, but that wasn't much better. Then I tried just keeping track in my notes, but it still felt off and not aligned with how I wanted my relationship with food and my body to be.

So, with the support of my dietitian, who didn't want me endlessly tracking anyway, I stopped tracking my food last week!

And I can report that I continued to be able to feed myself, and remain well nourished and energized for all the things I like to do with my body.

Thanks to those of you who gently encouraged me to stop tracking altogether when I posted a while back. I did it! (and took the tracking app off my phone so it wasn't the first thing I saw when I turned it on)

Logging at the end of the day

I realized that I was starting to feel crazy logging all my foods before I ate them, planning and cramming enough protein and fiber in and I was starting to feel sick on some days when I was eating according to the food log. But, I also still have a fear that if I don't log I'll either become malnutritioned or eat way too much.

So, yesterday and today I decided to just set myself free to wander the world and eat when and where and how much I felt like. I jotted down what I had eaten in my Notes app, and how I felt before and after, but I didn't put it into my food log app until the end of the day. I let my hunger (I do still have hunger cues on Zepbound) be my guide and would eat even if it wasn't a "proper" meal time.

And wouldn't you know -- I actually know how to feed myself when I'm not penned in and haven't planned it all in advance.

Both days so far, my calories and protein were within normal limits, and I ate a fruit or vegetable at every meal, not because they were on the plan but because they looked good. I was a little low on fiber today, but that's because I'm out of yogurt and missing my chia/yogurt/raspberry goop. But also, I'm not going to cram any more food onto my plan for today just to boost fiber because I'm full.

I meet with a dietitian weekly so I do like to have a log to send her, but it feels so much healthier and less stressful to log my food way after the fact.

Does anyone else do this? I feel like it's step one to not logging at all some day, trusting that the choices I make for myself are adequately nourishing me.

How do you get NEAT?

One of the things I am really realizing I lack is NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) or a lot of fidgeting/puttering energy. I am one of those people who tends towards sloth if left to my own devices during the work day when I'm just sitting at my computer. I've started setting 7 minute timers throughout the day for "Puttering Time" where I just get up and move and do some chores, or walk around outside for a bit, or pace while on the phone, or organize something but I figured I'd ask you all for ideas, too.

Do you move around a lot during the day? What are you doing? Did you turn yourself from a turtle to a hummingbird, movement-wise? How?

Life without a fitness tracker?

I've been wearing an Apple watch for years. It has told me when to stand up (admittedly something I need help with during the workday, but also sometimes I'll be standing and cooking for an hour and it will tell me to stand up), I double check my heart rate during workouts, using the numbers to tell me how I feel rather than my own interoception. I stress over biking in the woods because it's not giving me credit for exercise because the bike speed is too slow even though it's an amazing and fun and enjoyable workout.

I forgot to charge it last night so I thought "Let's have Sunday be No Watch Day" and see how I feel.

But now I'm thinking "do I actually need it at all?" Could I just my workout effort by tuning into my heart? Could I stand up because my butt is going numb? Could I move throughout the day simply because it feels good?

If you don't use a fitness tracker, what's that like? If you stopped using one, did you feel freer? More in tune with your body?

Also what's prompting this is that my dietitian wants me not to track food when I go away with family for a few days, so I thought of just free-balling life like it's 1999.

EDIT: I just took my first walk with out the tracker! It was really nice to let my body set the pace and distance, and not the tracker.

Adding variety to dishes?

I am currently eating sweet potato and black bean hash with eggs for breakfast. It's good, but it's also very one-note--kind of mushy and the only "spices" I put in were salt, pepper and herbs de provence.

I feel like someone else would make it much more interesting. Like it's missing some kind of crunch or zing.

What do you add to your meals to give them zest and zing and crunch and interest?

Take your photos!

Go do it. Now. Take them with your stomach slack, take them standing, sitting, trying to button those pants, with your arm flexed. Don't forget to smile (mine look like I'm practicing for my psychopath photoshoot). Put them in the Hidden album in your phone if you need to.

And then in 3 months take them again and use an app to do side by sides and I bet you'll at least say "huh, I guess it is working" if not "woo hoo i look amazing!"

My scale barely moves, but I just retook photos after my first batch in April and I only look 6 months pregnant now instead of 8. Progress!

Guys, my knee fat is gone

I was sitting there watching TV with my feet up and went to grab that bit of fat above my knee, as one does, and it was...gone. My hand tried to grab a chunk and a small sliver of skin was there and then it slipped out of my hand. All that was there was quadricep. My emotional support knee fat is gone and I never even got to say goodbye.

Now, the scale has been doing feck all, but I also started with a personal trainer 3 days a week at the same time I started Zep 3 months ago, and I can tell that things are happening (my sister also pointed out that my arms have definition even when I'm not flexing) but this was the first time I went to pat some fat and it was gone.

I guess my belly will have to do for now.

Have your comfort spots gone missing, too?

It took my taste for alcohol

I don't drink a lot, 1 per day, maybe 2 on the weekends, but I did used to love a gin and tonic, or a glass of rose' on the patio, and now I just don't even think to have any alcohol. I tried to have a gin and tonic the other nice and the second half of it just sat there on the counter sweating until I dumped it in the sink.

It's weird.

I'm not losing a ton of weight, but it's doing something in there.

Would you buy a Lexus with 3 minor damage reports on the carfax or keep looking?

Considering a 2021 Rx350 with around 75,000, $31,000. It had one owner, who apparently couldn't drive very well, and 3 minor damage reports on the carfax. All damage has been repaired. I would be buying it from a reputable dealer where I've gotten other cars. It seems to be priced to reflect the past damage, and I tend to drive cars until they die so wouldn't run into trade in issues with it.

Would you buy this car? I'm set on an RX350, and the price is within my budget, and know how good the cars are (I still miss the 2011 I was driving until last year when I traded it in for a hybrid rav4 I've been regretting ever since.) I'm in no rush, and don't want to make a dumb decision.

Multiple Rescues on Lafayette this week

Of note: they called for help at 8pm, and while hut croo got to them shortly, they weren't safe and warm in the hut until 3am. 7 hours. When you are packing for your hikes, bring what you'll need to be comfortable while immobile for 7 hours. (This was also taught to us in Wilderness First Aid class, to assume a rescue is 7 hours away.)

From the NH Fish and Game FB page

"Multiple unprepared hikers rescued on Mt Lafayette in Franconia

Franconia: On Friday, June 19, 2026, at approximately 8:00 pm The New Hampshire Fish and Game was notified of a group of hikers at the summit of Mount Lafayette in Franconia who were suffering from hypothermia in cold, wet, rainy conditions. The hikers said they had no visibility, no lights and no warm clothing. A call was made to the AMC and Greenleaf Hut Crew on Mt. Lafayette to have two crewmembers hike up and assist.

The AMC Crew hiked up towards the summit of Mt. Lafayette and located the hikers .15 miles below the summit. One hiker, Dmytro Grechko, 19 from New Jersey was unresponsive, and suffering from severe hypothermia. The second hiker, Jason Fisher, 19 of New Jersey was cold, wet but still alert and also suffering from hypothermia. The AMC Crew began the process of warming the hikers by providing shelter and dry clothing. Due to the condition of the hikers calls to the Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team and the Lakes Region Search and Rescue Team were made to assist in carrying the unresponsive hiker from the summit to the Greenleaf Hut.

While responding to the first call, a second rescue call came in on Mount Lafayette for another group of hikers who were wet, cold and also suffering from hypothermia. The second group of hikers were about 1.1 miles from the trailhead. Rescuers who were responding to the first rescue call were able to provide lights, dry clothing and assist them back to the trailhead.

Rescuers arrived at Dmytro Grechko’s location at approximately 1:10 am. He was then carried down to the Greenleaf Hut arriving at 2:55 am. Once at the hut rescuers were able to get shelter from the weather and warm Dmytro Grecho. Unfortunately, while carrying Dmytro in the inclement weather, a volunteer rescuer was severely injured and needed to be helped back to the trailhead.

Over the next couple hours rescuers treated the group of hikers for hypothermia and cold related injuries. While at the Greenleaf Hut Dmytro condition began improving and he regained consciousness. Once the group was warm and dry the rescuers assisted Dmytro down the Old Bridle Path arriving at the trailhead at 7:55 am. Dmytro Grechko was transported from the trailhead by the LinWood Ambulance to Littleton Regional Hospital for further medical treatment."

I've been taking tarot classes for a year or so, with an experienced teacher, and a good in person class, and the more I learn the less I believe.

Has anyone ever run into this?

I just keep thinking "okay, I've gotten a bunch of readings over time and literally nothing is coming true, nothing has been told to me that I couldn't have figured out on my own or in therapy. What is the point of this?"
