How Can a Pensioner Practice Speaking Danish in Denmark

As a retiree traveling to Denmark to learn Danish, how can I get practice speaking Danish with Danes? All the anecdotes say Danes switch immediately to English when they hear you struggling. Also, there is no small talk.

Any recommendations from other old folks?

Note - I will be in København.

NW Corner of State Line and Red Bridge Roads

In the span of three weeks, the land on the NW corner of State Line and Red Bridge Roads went from a gnarly forest to a construction site.

What do they plan on building there? Does anyone know?

Year of Hell

I just finished watching Voyager's Year of Hell two part episode. It was surprisingly good.

Captain Janeway is a no nonsense leader with a strong sense of duty towards her ship and her crew and Kate Mulgrew did a wonderful job in this episode.

The plot and storyline were interesting - Don't mess with the historical timeline, that will mess things up. (Proceeds to mess with the historical timeline and messes things up.) If you try to fix it, you'll make things worse. (Proceeds to make things worse trying to fix things that were messed up by jacking with the historical timeline )

Sidebar --> Ah, the folly of the mortals who have but the slightest understanding of the universe! You think just because you can do math and run calculations....

I particularly liked watching the interaction and dialogue between Tuvok and Seven. They are both so matter of fact in their observations of human behavior.

The ending was fitting. This will definitely be a rewatch for me.

Colonial Records

Hello fellow family historians. I have recently begun researching my colonial ancestors - specifically Massachusetts Bay Colony and Connecticut Colony. I paid for an American Ancestors subscription to find resources. Most of the records are books which reference primary sources. I would like to find these sources, but I don't know where to look.

When I had a chat with one of the genealogists at American Ancestors, she said the books are guides and I could find some records on Family Search. I was wondering if I need to travel to Massachusetts and Connecticut to locate them, and if so, where are these records usually kept? At the town, county, state archives?

Are there any people in this subreddit who are familiar with New England colonial records!

The Genealogist's Sin - Presentism

As genealogists we have chosen to go back into history to find records about the individual we are researching. In doing so, it is our responsibility to shed our preconceptions and presumptions in order to avoid the "sin" of Presentism.

Presentism is applying modern senses and sensibilities to language used about race, gender, sexuality, or religion, and applying modern moral and ethical codes to behaviors of the people you are researching.

History is messy and uncomfortable. Life is not fair and people are not always nice. When I come across records that bother me because they are racist or misogynistic or violent or gross I have to put aside my judgement and just take in the information, save the record, and cite the reference.

Only later do I sit back and say, "Wow, that was pretty f&*k@d up."

So those of you who are new to genealogy and to history, get ready. You ain't seen nothing yet.

Edited for clarity.

Voyager Shuttlecraft

Voyager staff go out on a lot of away missions with their shuttles. Many times the shuttles are damaged or destroyed. Too many. I mean how many shuttles can a galaxy class (or whichever class it is) starship accommodate?

I wonder how they are repaired.

Does anybody have a source where the Voyager's shuttles are identified and what happens to them?

I have an enquiring mind. I want to know. 😉

Kazon Hair

Okay, what's up with Kazon hair? Does anybody know the lore behind the quasi-dreads that look like they are soaked in colorful clay?

Tick Advice

Hello. Yes, I know it's a bad tick year, but I can't avoid outdoors because I am growing a lot of my own food and had to move my garden from my upper deck to the ground. Ticks have always freaked me out, but I have to learn to deal with them.

Here is what I have been doing - treated pants and socks with permethrin; wear rubber farm boots with pants tucked in; spray deep woods off on pants, around tucked in part too, and all over boots; spray on arms, rub into neck (hopefully no palsy later in life). When I come inside, disrobe before entering house, leave boots downstairs and wear house shoes. Take a shower to wash off ticks, chemicals and potential poison ivy.

And yet, despite all this, the next day, there was a tick on my ankle! It hadn't been there long, it was easy to pull out and I flushed it down the toilet.

On another occasion I found a tick on my belly, and I hadn't even been outside! How are they getting in my house and what can I do to keep them out? 🤬 ticks!

Location "Allow/Deny" Popups

I am at the end of my rope. Every time I go to a website within my duckduckgo browser, say, for Home Depot or Menards or whatever, a location permission popup happens. I am sick and tired of clicking Deny, with the popup occurring with every single iteration that you go through when looking for a product, i.e. homepage - popup --> tools - popup --> wrenches - popup --> stanley - popup.

I have gone into my operating system and turned off location. Did not work. I have gone into duckduckgo and set the browser to "don't ask for location". Didn't work. Did a fire cleanse and started over. Didn't work. Went into All Search Settings and turned off location.

Resorted to AI and had Claude walk me through how to turn off these annoying prompts. Poor Claude - after letting it know that nothing it was advising was working, it admitted defeat and said that Mozilla Firefox has an evident way to block location inquiry prompts and I should consider moving on.

One thing that was brought up was that DDG had an update a little less than a year ago, and this may be responsible.

Has anyone else had issues with the incessant location popups? Were you able to get them to stop? If so, how?

My OS is Windows 11 and this occurs only on my desktop.

Mildewy Moldy Smell Eradication

Hello r/laundry Experts.

I ran a load of dark delicates (lots of petroleum based fibers for stretchiness). After washing the load, I was unable to continue with the laundry because I got really sick.

At the same time, my washer developed a slow drip leak that created a mini-pond. The clothes sat in that pond water until I was able to attend to them. They all have a mildewy, moldy smell.

I drained the washer, then rewashed the clothes using a cup of vinegar (not good for the fibers, but I don't know what else to use). The clothes still smell.

The items in the wash are lingerie, nurse's scrubs and tops, gauze pants and PJs.

The washer may need to be cleaned too.

Any and all advice is welcome.

I just don't want to go to work smelling like I have been living in Grandma's basement for the past year and I can't afford to buy a new wardrobe.

Thank you to all.
