FTL Question

So, I was thinking about FTL and how it normally portrayed in SciFi and I asked myself a question that I thought I would pass onto the community here. Which version of FTL would you personally find more interesting.

A) FTL requires massive amounts of boiling for its equipment and energy to the effect that ships equipped with FTL dwarf ships with out FTL. This would lead to situations like the Guild Hieliners in Dune or the Empire of Man series by Weber and Ringo

B) FTL follows the square-cubbed lad and as a result only works on relatively small ships. You may end up with a lot of FTL ship, but capacity wise you’ll never have more room than a bus or a semi truck.

Bixby has broken my daughters tablet

My daughter has somehow managed to turn on Bixby on her tablet which instantly rendered the touch screen useless. Anywhere you touch the screen you just get a voice explaining what that thing is (ex: "home key; pressing this button will take you home"). It doesn't matter how many times you press home key, you just keep getting the explanation of what it is while still being stuck on the same screen. I tried telling it to turn itself off ("hi bixby, please turn off"), but no dice. A quick google search told me to power down the tablet then power it back up. An now I am stuck at the login screen. We can't even put in my daughters password, the voice just mocks us.

Let’s start a fight.

Best two songs from each of the Act albums.
Act 1: “The Will of One” & “Vengeance”
Act 2: “Light up the Night” & “Breaking Out”
Act 3: “Hold Back the Night” & “Hold On”

*Edit* I am a little surprised by how many of you didn’t like any of my picks. I am more surprised by how viciously you are are downvoting each other in the comments. I know I said that I wanted to start a fight, but there are no bad takes.

What am I missing?

I recently started at a new company in th e shipping department and we use D365. And I am really on the fence about it. I feel as though I am missing something. I keep hearing how great this program is, but I am just not seeing it.

Even a simple task of releasing an order to be shipped feels overly complicated with having to jump through bundle tables, all loads tables, slaws orders, outbound workbench. And so many more. I have to multiple tabs just to track all the different menus. And don’t get me started on load times or views. The simplest action can take upwards of 30 seconds to load. And every time I ask a coworker for help it ends up with me importing a different view cause it’s the only way they know how to make it work.

Is this what D365 is supposed to be or is my company just not using it right? None of my coworkers seem to like the program. And yet, it is where a good 80% of my job lives.

Solar system design tools

Hoping that someone here can point me in the right direction. I am looking for a tool (or tools) that would help me flesh out my own solar system. What I want is a digital tool where I can pick a star (mass, color, Goldilocks zone size/distance, ect.) and then add planets (again being able to pick variables such as gas giant, rocky planetoid, ect) and then adjust the orbits of those planets.

Does anyone here have any recommendations?

Building truck loads by length and height

I recently started a new role in the shipping department of my company and I am trying to make a “load calculator” tool to make my new position a little easier.  You see, presently, when we have an out bound load that we need to plan we have to look at all of the bundles that need to go out and calculate how many we can fit on the truck AND how big those truck need to be.  Bundles may be stacked up to 90 inches high, and length will be determined by truck size.

So, we have bundle length, which can be essentially anything but is typically between 8 feet and 36 feet.  Bundle height which is generally between 4 inches 36 inches. And Truck length which typically comes in three sizes: 53 feet, 48 feet, and 40 feet.  What I want is to be able to enter each individual bundle I have for a particular shipment and get back how many trucks and types of trucks I will need.

A simple example would be: I have 6 bundles that are 19 feet long and 35 inches tall; I can fit all of them onto 1 40’ truck because I can place two by two with two on top of the first two.  Does that make sense?

Looking for a place to digitally build models

Ok, this is a long shot. But right now; between Cadians, Krieg, and different kill team set there are a lot of hypothetical ways we can build out troops.

I am looking to mix and match heads, bodies, arms , and legs to see if I can find a combination that really stands out to me. Now, I could go out and buy two or three sets of each and just have a go at it, but I am poor. And plastic crack is expensive. So, I was wondering if there was a website that had digital scans or something of the various troops out there so I could play with them like legos.

Now this bit is important, I do not need to download any of the combinations that I make. I am not look for an stl file or anything else that could be used the 3D print the minis. That is not what I want to do. If stl file is the best tool for mixing and matching then so be it. But I am not interested in printing minis.

Who do I reach out to?

This is a question about local government, we live in Chester which is a city within Chesterfield. And, well, we want sidewalks. There is a nice shopping center with a library and pharmacy near our hous, but despite being with in walking distance we always have to drive there as there is no sidewalk and the road is super busy. So, who should I reach out to? How do I make my voice heard on this matter? I don’t expect a quick turn around, but I am sure that the families that live in this neighborhood after us would appreciate having a safe place to walk.

How to automate conditional formatting

Alright, I have a work spreadsheet that has two columns; lot number and serial number. Serial numbers are always unique, lot numbers are not. Out if a hundred items in the list there maybe 8 unique lot numbers.

I want to highlight every entry by lot number, and I would like it set up in such a way that everytime I enter a new lot number it gets assigned it’s own color. Initially I was thinking about using conditional formation g (hence the title) but I am not sure that that can be automated.

Is there a way to do this? And I just being dumb?

What happened with ESG?

Eastern Shipbuilding Group is a smallish shipyard located in the Florida pan handle. They manage to pump out a good number of civilian vessels including; ferries, fire glfighting boats, and research vessels. By all accounts, these ships are fine. They do what they are supposed too. One even cameoed in one of the Marvel movies.

But when it comes to government ship building, ESGs record is just bad. Their big foray into this area was the Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) for the US Coast Guard. There was a myriad of problems (including a hurricane) the end result of which is that ESG lost the contract and the first four hull (none of which were finished) are to be scrapped. Correct me if I am wrong about any of that.

My question(s) is why did ESG fail? Was it the government? Did congress mess things up? Did the coast guard self sabotage the program? Was it the shipyard? Was ESG management too busy measuring ducks and forget to build the ships? Did labour drop the ball? Did ESG under bid? Did they underpay the workers? Does the Jones Act make it exceedingly difficult to build ships in the US? Was the OPC concept flawed from its design? Is that part of Florida just a bad place for a shipyard? No major river or interstate access after all.

Just what went wrong?

So, this is going to be a silly question and it is going to show my ignorance, but wouldn’t fusion fuel gradually geadually get heavier?

What I mean is, let’s say you start with hydrogen as your fuel. The fussion process would convert that into helium. If you keep your reactor running and don’t swap out the fuel, the helium would become Beryllium. And then oxygen and so on, right? And I am sure you would get other events as non-like events fused together.

Would the reactor eventually be filled with plasma-lead? Can lead even enter the plasma phase of matter?

This is more of a thought exercise than anything else, and to be honest; I am not sure that “weakness” is the correct term for the problem that I am referring too.

The Riverlands are to open. They are the crossroads for the entire continent. All of their neighbors have throng defensive geography that they can fall back on. But the Riverlands? They have no such luck. The Riverlands are the only rejoin of Westeroes that was under foriegn occupation prior to the Targaryen invasion, and if you look through their history, they are almost always dealing with foreign invasion.

Despite that, when there is peace they instantly become one of the most prosperous regions of Westeroes. And those two things, lack of defensive geography and potential prosperity drive the invasion cycle.

For the leaders of the Riverlands there is only one real solution, they need an ally. Preferably a “soft” over lord. This is what Robb was supposed to be during the main books. He rode down the Kings Road and came to their aid. If the war had gone differently and Robb had won, he would have ridden back North and left the Riverlanders to their own devices. This is the ideal situation for them.

If there had been a “southern conspiracy” this would have been the goal. But with out a protector, with out someone willing to ride to their rescue, the Riverlands become a peach ripe for the taking. And as long as it remains that way it will drive war after war in Westeroes. It is an inherent destabilizing entity.

Rant(?) over.
