OTD in 1779, Paine, as a member of the Whig Society, co-writes and co-signs a letter to Robert Morris, contesting his illegal unloading of a French ship docked in Philadelphia. Which makes Paine's eventual collaboration with Morris a valuable example of principled political compromise.

Steve Allen moderates the debate on the first ever episode of "Meeting Of Minds", a television series which aired on PBS from 1977 to 1981. Paine appears somewhere around the 26 minute mark and dominates the conversation from there. This portrays Paine very positively although is not 100% accurate.
