Harvest is in

Harvest is in

The other half is in the fridge. Had to prune a lot of the tree this year due to blight so I'm really happy to see what we got this year.

Pear density problem

This is mostly planning for next year, but one section of my pear tree grew them right on top of each other. They're in an awkward spot to pick, but also they look smaller than the rest of the harvest. Could I do something to thin this out during budding earlier in the year?

Dependent claim data point

Filed for adding new dependents in early Jan, decision in late June, first payment on 1 Aug, and back pay for that time period was deposited last night. I've seen other people here report a six month process as well, so just something to plan for.

Japanese Maple watering

9B, clay soil. Just ripped out the weed mat and river rock surrounding my Maple. I know the water spikes are too close, but I'm not 100% sure on where to put them. Should I stick with the spikes or switch to another method? Someone mentioned I need watering at four points instead of the two. The ground is solid so digging is going to be a chore. Thoughts?

Collar tags catching

So that's twice now in the last month that she's managed to get her tags snagged on her crate and they've snapped off. If it was just at night I'd consider having her sleep with her collar off, but this also happened in her travel crate in the car. Are there small carabineers for collars out there we could try?

Inflatable ball alternatives

Found on Chewy. It comes in three sizes. This was either the middle or the biggest option. I think we should have got her one slightly smaller, but she loves it. Make sure there's nothing breakable nearby. When she's not playing with this, she has one of those kettlebell-looking things to run around with or play tug with me.

Dependents back pay

The change in dependents I submitted in Jan was approved in mid-June and the new pay rate reflected on today's deposit; however, I should still be receiving six months of back pay along with it. The decision letter in June mentioned an audit, but how long do those usually take?

Picking time?

Pears are a mix right now of big green softballs, these mixed color middle sized, and a number of underdeveloped ones. I read something about giving them a gentle tug and if they just come off then they're ready; however, I have pears 10 feet up that I can't really do that with. How do I determine when they're ready to come off? What am I looking for?

Adding dependents

My oldest graduated high school last month so she was discontinued from my disability payments. She starts college next month so I can get her readded; however, what is required for evidence? Right now all I have is her class schedule with her name at the top of the page. Also, it only covers the current semester. Will I need to resubmit every couple months or will the VA keep her on for the entire year?

Gardeners - Fall pruning?

When do you all start cutting back your bushes, flowers, and other greenery for the Fall? Feels like we had an early Spring, and "summer" conditions can run through September around here. This is my first year paying attention to this kind of thing and I have a lot of overgrown stuff that needs pruned as soon as it's the proper timeframe.

Bookings creating link errors

Enterprise Office 365 - I have a user whose Bookings links are giving a "This link is not valid." He's been using Bookings for a year and this happened about a week ago. He seems to be the only one affected. It doesn't matter if I'm trying to open the link he sends out or he's trying to open his own, we get the same response. He can open his personal page to build his meeting templates, but the "email link" or "copy link" is what is producing the error. His license is good, everything is set to public, and as far as I can tell the URL matches the same format as mine when I create a link to send out.

Microsoft support has suggested creating the link directly from Outlook calendar, but that didn't work. If I can't figure it out I'll open a ticket through my Admin Center, but wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions.

What is this on my pear tree?

On the lower trunk. It's spongy. I have no idea how long it's been there.

Toy rubbing her raw?

She's had these pink spots appearing on her lower lip the last few weeks. Doesn't seem to bother her, but we're wondering if one of her new chew toys is doing it. It's a very large bone with some bristles built into it. We took it away to see if it has any effect. Anyone had a similar experience?

Chatbot needs a lot of work

Tried several sessions of negotiating with your "Live" AI agent to change my internet plan. It took several attempts for it to recognize what I was asking, and then would only allow me to sign up if I accepted the phone plan that Comcast is pushing so hard this summer. I disconnected and got a real person on the phone who tried to only sell me a single plan as if it was the only one I was qualified for, and also pushed to get me to sign up for the phone plan. Between the chatbot and this customer service agent it felt like Comcast didn't even care if I signed up for internet. I called back a couple days later and got someone who was able to sign me up for what I asked for within a couple minutes without them even trying to sell me the phone service.

Getting back to the AI bot, I've tried asking numerous simple questions, but it seems to only want to react to a handful of keywords whether we're talking about Sales, Billing, or Outages. I tried asking about the upcoming planned outage in my area and it just kept replying with "You don't have an outage right now." I know that. That's not what I asked. These kinds of limited automated responses are what I'd expect a decade ago.

Submitting files

I need to upload some docs for my claim, but for weeks the website keeps giving me an error message saying I need to put them in the mail or in person. Any way around this? If I need to go over to the regional office, how quickly will be they be uploaded?

C&P scheduled me for additional testing

No questions, just an interesting data point. I had a C&P a few weeks ago to have a Sinusitis claim looked again (original was 0%). The result was for the C&P examiner to give me a 0% rating for Rhinitis instead but also put me in for a CT scan of my nasal cavity. My VSO called me up and said "Hey, they put in the notes here they found something in your C&P sinus x-ray and think you should have it identified." I didn't think that was something they did. The next available appointment at my VA hospital is in freaking September, but that's a different issue.

Trying to save my lawn

Aerated and spread out Fescue seed at the end of March. I'm not sure what grass was there before, but quite a bit died off and turned to mud during the winter. The green photo is from April after everything grew in or woke up. I was watering 10 minutes every other day to get this. The other photo is from yesterday. That whole section on the left died off over the last month. I'm currently watering MWF for 15 minutes. I have sprinklers at each corner of the yard except for the lower left and one in the right middle. There's an irrigation pipe capped in the rocks on the left, but it never had a sprinkler head. I know that water reaches this left side, but I'm wondering if it just wasn't enough once the heat came back. Is there anything I can do now, or do I just need to keep what I have alive and try again in the fall? Should I go back to keeping the ground moist at all times? Zone 9B, Sacramento, CA area.

The dead spots in the middle are from our dog. That's another problem I'm trying to work through.

Mandarin Tree - after harvest

Mandarin Orange tree in the backyard in a raised bed. Previous owners surrounded it with river rock and wedged it between a Privet and some other tree/bush thing that is just taking up space. I'm working on cutting both neighbors down to small bushes to give this thing more light and replacing the rock with mulch. I know its too late in the season to do anything to the Orange tree itself until after harvest, but what should I do with it? The interior is a bit tangled and the outer portions don't seem to have any kind of plan to them.

Out of control Cistus (at least I think it is)

This photo is from March, and it's only gotten bigger. It's just pouring out in all directions. Can I cut it back now or do I need to wait until Fall like everything else? Is there a shape I should go for?
