Is history worth pursuing as a degree?

I’ve been set on the idea of becoming a historian or working in that field because I’m very passionate about history! But lately I’ve been reconsidering. I’ve heard that it’s not the best career path, and that it’s very challenging and competitive to get a job (and also in Australia it’s probably harder?). I’m really worried about it not working out for me. My question is, is it worth it? Do you guys have fun? Is it a good career? Can it support me?
Thanks :)

Looking for entertaining psychology books!

Hello reddit! I need some book recommendations for my friend that doesn’t use reddit- but is in need of good books to read. She has a passion for psychology and wants to become a criminal psychologist. Requirements for the book below:

- would like a book that goes into extensive detail about different mental illnesses and disorders.

- would like autobiographies that are written in a way that makes it entertaining but still informative.

- would also prefer if the author was a woman.

- if the book is about someone, she’d like it to be completely honest and straight to the point, no matter how visceral it is.

Even if the book doesn’t meet all the requirements, she’d still like to hear the recommendations anyway
Thanks :)

How to tame baby hairs?

I have curly-wavy ish hair and whenever I put it up in any way my Baby hairs stick out 🥹 it’s not cute either it literally goes straight outwardly so I look crazy. How can I make them look more natural, less seperate, nicer and not like I’ve just been electrocuted? I’m sick of looking like a mess

Ive tried water and gel but they get super curly (and frizzy) and don’t match the hair type the rest of my hair has.

Are these OCD symptoms?

Hey reddit, I’m coming here because idk who else to ask about this- I just need another opinion.
So for the past 2-ish years I feel like I’ve been experiencing signs of OCD. I’ll list all my habits below

- constantly feeling the need to make sure doors are 100% locked until it feels “right” especially before I go to sleep, I’ll go back and rattle the door handle making sure it’s actually locked, and repeat this until it feels right

- constantly checking within cabinets, under beds and outside at night to make sure nobody is there, and I’ll force myself to look in the same corners of the cabinet throughly until it feels right and safe

- placing something somewhere then convincing myself that if I don’t move it then something terrible is going to happen

- feeling the need to check all my messages to make sure I didn’t send something I didn’t mean to send

- (dunno if this relates to ocd) doing anything to avoid going out or going to school, sometimes gets to the point where I literally can’t move from where I am until I know my plans are cancelled

- needing to clarify under my breath or out loud that I’m joking after I make a joke about death or something really serious or else it’ll come back to me

- lately I’ve been constantly scrunching my nose, and I can’t stop, if I don’t do it I feel like my face is off and I can’t breathe

There are so, so many more but these are the major ones I can think of at the moment. I have really big paranoia or anxiety about someone breaking into my home or something like that, so I always feel the need to check everything before I go to bed. Even when I tell myself that it’s not probable, I make up scenarios and convince myself that if I don’t do something, then something terrible will happen to me or my family. Even when I was younger I’d convince myself that if I undid the plait that my mother did to my hair, or messed up the flower she pinned, then something bad would happen to her. These feelings disappeared for a bit until around 2 years ago. It’s exhausting to go through these habits every single day so please someone let me know if this is something worth looking into, or if it’s not really anything. *also just to clarify, I’ve never been diagnosed with anything before.

What would the creature look like now?

So, I was watching GDT’s Frankenstein with my friend and during a scene with the creature- she suddenly said “what if the creature had a low taper fade” 😭
This made me wonder, what would the creature look like now? What would his hairstyle/haircut be? What clothes would he wear?
I thought that maybe he’d look relatively the same, same shoulder length hair, dark clothes. But I dunno, it’ll have been years since the events of the film took place, so what do you guys think?
(this is specially on the GDT version of the creature, but feel free to talk about the creature in other versions)

Does anyone know of films similar to “La Chimera” 2023?

I recently watched La Chimera and fell in love with the whole aesthetic of the film and of course, the fact that it’s shot on film. However, what intrigued me the most was the focus on Etruscans, Ancient Rome and things of that field. So my question to you all, is are there any movies similar to La Chimera, that have that same tinge of Ancient Rome, maybe even Ancient Greece to it??
Thanks :)

How to learn more about Mary Shelley and/or the making of Frankenstein

I’m a really, really big fan of Frankenstein and I’ve read the 1818 version, watched a lot of Frankenstein inspired/based movies and took it upon myself to learn a bit about Mary Shelley and how the novel came to be. But I feel as if I don’t know enough about her. So I was wondering if any of you guys knew of some good YouTube video essays, articles or really anything that can give me a good rundown on Mary’s life and that night (or those weeks) in which she was inspired to write Frankenstein. I know all the key events of course but I’m looking for something more detailed to tell me all there is to know!!
Thanks :)

struggling to find (entertaining) history books

I have a passion for history and have big dreams to become a historian in the future - I listen to a variety of video essays and read articles online about really just any historical events.
I’ve been meaning to read some history books but here’s my issue- all of them are so boring.
So here’s my question: does anyone have any historical non-fiction books that are actually entertaining? Please let me know!!! It also doesn’t matter what event it’s based on, or whether it’s modern or ancient history. I just want to learn about ANYTHING historical.

edit: thank you all for the recommendations!! I’ve added them all to my list so I’ll check them out :) keep them coming tho
