Wavy hair struggles

Wavy hair struggles

Hi all!

I'm so lost on what to do. Just got a trim but my hair always ends up looking frizzy and in clumps, no matter what. I use a filter for water, and a leave in conditionner followed by some hair oil after every wash with Aveeno products. I diffuse it low heat. But I'm stuck.

Any advice on how to get soft curls/waves that don't clump please?

I also don't have time to wait for a gel cast, I just want to avoid the frizz and clumps 🙏

Why does my fine hair look so bad now?

I have fine, wavy hair (with a little curl). My hair used to have more defined curls and waves (1st photo) but lately, I can barely get my hair to look like it has any waves at all (2nd photo). These photos were roughly taken 3 years apart and in that time, I started not really caring about my hair as much as I was busy with school. Now I want to start styling my hair again, but am really struggling to achieve the same results I used to. Unfortunately, I really don't remember what products I was using before.

When my hair is wet, it is very curly, but as it dries, it ends up more wavy. I think this is partly because my hair naturally goes into very small clumps when wet. Shortly after it is done drying, it loses all volume and definition like in the second photo.

Lately, I have been using a light gel or mousse on wet hair (achieving similar results with both). Then I wait for it to dry (air drying and diffusing) before scrunching out, but it tends to end up stringy and undefined. It feels like any product I use ends up weighing down my hair, but using none results in wavy/curly hair that loses definition almost immediately after drying.

Please does anyone have some advice on what I am doing wrong? Does anyone with a similar hair type have any tips?

Other notes about my hair: Naturally very, very soft and fine. Not color-treated. My hair gets greasy really easily. I tend to use shampoo every other day and even on the second day it is greasy. I have tried brush styling before but it just never worked for me, especially when I prefer short hair. My hair in the photos is as long as I ever let it get.

Not liking the shape while growing out my hair.

It's been almost a year since I started growing out my hair. While at the beginning I was liking how it was coming out, lately I've been thinking about cutting it since I'm not liking how it's shaping up. Maybe I shouldn't cut it completely and only a little bit since I want to still grow my hair. What do you think.

Routine:

- Shampoo: Aussie Bouncy Curls once a week

- Conditioner: Aussie Hydrating Conditioner every time I wash my hair, so 2-3 times a week.

- Leave in: Cantu Leave in Conditioning Cream every time I wash my hair.

- Mousse: Lotta Body Coconut and Shea Oils, after adding my leave in, I apply this mousse and ran my fingers through my hair with it until it's distributed correctly.

help ! my curl is gone

for years of my life I had super short curly hair. I decided to grow it out and start dyeing it brighter colors, and yeah I've bleached it about 4 times total now but it had always maintained (slightly more loose, which I had always assumed was from the weight of my hair) it's curl. A few weeks ago I decided I wanted to cut it all off again and at first it was stick straight, I figured it just needed a couple days and some deep conditioner but it's been over a month and my curl still isn't coming back. Is it just bleach damage maybe ? It makes me a bit sad honestly. I deep condition my hair weekly, and have been trying tresemmé keratin conditioner as my regular conditioner. I scrunch with Aunt Jackie curl custard and air dry (which used to work amazing, now the little curl I get from 30 minutes of scrunching still falls out ). I wear a satin bonnet to bed and have a silk pillow case. any advice is appreciated <3 thank you. I've been using Function of Beauty curly shampoo.

Is this too much fallout???

This seems like a lot of hair to come out during a shampoo/conditioner/leave in product situation. Am I crazy or is this not normal? Anyone else have this and NOT have a medical issue associated?? I have an appointment for blood work this week to check my iron and such….for context, I have naturally gray 3b hair and I wash once a week and I don’t brush in between but hairs do fall out while prepping hair each day. I also am overdue for a trim.

Should I get my first haircut after 2 years of growing out my curls?

Hi everyone! Hope you're doing great. I've been growing my hair out from a buzz cut for two years now, and I haven't gotten a haircut at all since then because: (1) I'm afraid of cutting it incorrectly and messing it up, (2) I don't know any good curly hair stylists in my country, and (3) I actually like how my hair looks now.

Lately, though, I've been wondering if it might look even better with some layering and maybe trimming my bangs a bit. I'm mainly thinking about layering because I'm not sure if my volume looks a little goofy or if I'm just overthinking it. As for my bangs, if I let them dry naturally they end up covering my eyes and even my nose, so after showering and styling I use a headband to lift them up at the roots while they finish drying. That keeps them from falling straight into my face.

I really don't know what to do. I'm worried I'll make a decision that I'll regret, so I'd really appreciate some advice. Thank you!

(The products I use are from a local brand, so they may not be available outside my country.)

Routine:

  1. I wash my hair with Bless shampoo, focusing on my scalp and letting the shampoo rinse through the ends.
  2. I apply a generous amount of Bless conditioner and detangle with my fingers while my hair is well-conditioned and soaking wet.
  3. I rinse the conditioner thoroughly, making sure to remove any that got on my scalp.
  4. I gently dab my hair with a towel so it's not dripping wet.
  5. I apply Bless leave-in conditioner (adding a little water to my hands if needed) and style by scrunching it into sections of my hair. Then I finger-comb it through.
  6. I diffuse until my hair is completely dry.
  7. I scrunch out the crunch.
  8. I sleep on a satin pillowcase.

I do this routine once a week and usually don't refresh my hair during the week. By the end of the week it tends to get bigger and frizzier, so I usually put it up in a puffy ponytail.

Haven’t found a gel/mousse I like, help!

I’m about a month into doing a curly hair routine and I’m struggling. I’ve used a few different products and still haven’t found anything I like. I am well aware I am in desperate need of a haircut (have an appointment) which will help with styling. I have tried Odele styling gel, Curlsmith Flexi Jelly, and NYM flash freeze (that’s what I’m using in the picture). I don’t want the wet hair look and that’s what the NYM is giving, but the Curlsmith and Odele don’t seem to offer enough hold. Any gel (heck…ANY product suggestions) you can make, I am all ears! Other products I use (not all on the same day necessarily)
BedHead recovery shampoo and conditioner
Giovanni foam
Kinky Curly Knot today leave in conditioner

Would a curly shag be appropriate me?

I want to cut my hair into a shag specifically because the top middle of my hair gets too heavy and it HURTS! Also I have a lot of dry ends so it might be a medium/short-ish shag.

Hair is low porosity
Shampoo/conditioner: California Naturals Dream Curl
After shower: Bread hair milk leave in conditioner, Olaplex hair repair conditioner, AG re:coil curl activator, Shea Moisture gel, AG Mousse (yes I add a lot of different stuff but it works)

I diffuse when I’m not lazy

Looking for experiences with keratin/smoothing treatments on extremely dense 3B curls 🤎

Hi everyone,
My 12-year-old daughter has extremely dense 3B curls, and we’re considering a keratin or smoothing treatment.

She doesn’t want straight hair or to lose her curls—she loves being curly. The challenge is that her hair is so incredibly thick and dense that it’s becoming difficult for her to manage on her own.
Our hope is that a treatment would keep her curls while making her hair easier to brush and detangle, reducing the bulk, puffiness and overall volume, cutting down on frizz, and making it much easier for her to style independently. Ideally, she’d be able to wash it, let it air dry naturally, and still have beautiful curls—just softer, less bulky and easier to manage.

I’d love to hear from anyone with similar dense 3B or 3C curls who has had a keratin or smoothing treatment. Did it keep your curls? How much did it reduce the bulk and volume? Did it make wash days and styling significantly easier? Could you still wear it naturally curly every day? Which treatment did you have?

If you have any before-and-after photos of your hair air dried naturally, I’d be so grateful if you’d be willing to share them.

We’re not looking to straighten her hair—just to make her beautiful curls easier for her to manage herself.

Any honest experiences, recommendations or photos would be hugely appreciated.

Thank you! ❤️

Is my hair curly or wavy? Or mixed?

My hair has ringlets, but they are really loose, and the back of my hair rarely coils up and stays wavy. Am I actually curly or just wavy. or is the back just a different curl pattern?

Also any tips on what to use for frizz would be great, in this picture the only product I have in is leave in conditioner from miss jessies

How do you keep your hair moisturized?

my hair feels soft and doesn't tangle easily after a wash day but throughout the week it starts feeling dryer, and more brittle (making it prone to breaking off) I have virgin hair so I know any damage is mechanical, right now i'm using pureology's leave in conditioner spray but I was wondering if there's any curl creams or serums i should be using to retain moisture?

Am I the only one who feels like standard diffusers just flatten wavy hair?

Like idk if my technique is just pure garbage or what but every time i try to use a regular diffuser on my 2b waves it just blast them into this weird frizzy bird nest or completely flattens the top.I keep seeing people on tiktok swear by high speed dryers for this and i've been looking at the laifen air but honestly i'm so skeptical. Does Laifen Air's diffuser work well for wavy or loosely curly hair or is it just gonna do the same exact thing?

My hair is super easily weighed down and i feel like most reviews are always people with like 3c curls who already have amazing definition.I don't wanna drop the cash if it's just gonna blow my waves straight out ngl. Anyone with loose curls actually tried it??

My hair looks nice everywhere except LA???

Any other city I can do whatever to my hair and it comes out nice. Cheap conditioner, expensive leave-in, great. Expensive conditioner, just gel. Awesome. Light shampooing when needs be. ANYTHING I do when i shower in my LA apartment.... dried. Weird. Feathery. Can never have a good hair day. Im thinking ok the water.... But one time I came from the IE, great curls, i go to my apartment. Im just chilling for 2 hours. Then I look in the mirror and im having a bunch of fly aways??? What is happening! its so frustrating.

A couple times my hair came out ok when i put leave-in and let it sink when wearing a shower cap. other times it didnt work. but either way Im on the go a lot and im used to showering and running out of the house knowing my wet hair is going to dry up beautifully. Now I have to plan to stay and let it dry cause I know I have to end up fixing weird dry spots and flyaways. Anyone gone through something like this? I also have a filter on the water btw.

I mostly use the brands organigro, bounce curl, and nexxus.

Yesterday I literally used a hotel conditioner to wash and rinse my hair then put a bouncurl cream and my hair was fabulous (I was in San Clemente). Today i used a bit of shampoo (didnt correctly wash my hair for a few days) organigro leave-in, and a bit of gel (im forgetting the name) and my hair looks fried. I usually let my hair air dry now adays cause im scared of making flyaways worse. I have sating pillow cases and here and there still wear a satin bonnet.

Help finding dupes or alternatives!

These are the products currently recommended to me by a curly hair stylist who cut my hair and gave me some help looking less frizzy and I love the results! But almost $100 is too much for me! I did try my friends curl talk cream last night and like the result if that helps offer alternatives. My current routine is: sauce beauty mint shampoo twice, sauce beauty guacamole hair mask, sauce guacamole leave in scrunched while soaking wet, and then the curl talk also while wet. Dry in a tshirt, sleep in a silk bonnet. Since I don't have the hella expensive products yet lol! Pic 1&2 are expensive products and results, pic 3, 4, 5, 6 are with "what I have at home until getting paid" results. I just want hair that looks nice while wearing it down! 😭

How to style curly hair in humid summer???

I have a pretty good routine for my hair when I wash it every 3-5 days but the summer where I am has been so hot that my hair routine isn’t lasting as long and, honestly, it’s been so nice to get in a shower without a shower cap… for people who have to get their hair wet every day, is the only option for nice hair to style it (with all my normal products + diffuse) every day?? It just feels like I need to add like 40 min to my morning routine which really sucks.

If anyone has product recommendations (3B), that’d be amazing. I’m in Canada and typically have been using ouidad products — wouldn’t want to go to much $$$ more than them. No idea about porosity but I don’t feel like my hair takes a crazy amount of time to dry if that helps?

Edit: idk guys I think I explained myself wrong — I know to spray it to reactivate and use a maintenance product between full wash days but that doesn’t really work on the days I need to literally get in the shower without a shower cap because I’m so hot, even if they aren’t hair wash days, lol.

Allergy-friendly routine recs!

2B hair (moderately fine, mostly wavy curl pattern, high density, high porosity, bleached and dyed)

But I’m allergic to:
Sunflower/safflower oil
Soy/soja oil
Sweet almond oil
Avocado oil

It feels like EVERYTHING is switching to sunflower oil and it’s genuinely left me baffled as to what to use. Curlsmith is largely sunflower oil based (tho I’m using the unscented leave-in which I like). I don’t like overly perfumed hair products but at this point I want anything that’s going to be good for my colored hair. HELP??

ETA: in the US and flexible on budget if it’s good

Best way to define curls when your hair is thin and fine

The first picture is luck. The humidity, maybe the product… however the top stays mostly flat and frizzy.
When I do curl routines, I look like a crunchy curl 90’s chick again.
The second picture is a daily basis… I wash, condition, put in leave in conditioner and brush with a curl brush and let it air dry.

Over moisturize curls need help

For the last month my hair has been fluffy super soft and weighed down. I have 3a curls. I used 3 different clarifying shampoos none of which helped the over moisture. I last used Kristin ness clarifying shampoo and a lightweight protein treatment with not your mother gel and mousse and my hair is still super soft and not as defined. What can I use to help this and dry my hair out a bit?
