New player, scouting phase doubts

Hi there,

I'm a new player and I'm having trouble identifying the actual scouting phase rules. I tried to search it in the app and internet and im not sure.

which are the newest ones?

1.- fortify-infiltrate-recon

2.- equip-reposition-ploy

Where do I buy the cards btw? I bought second hand the 2024 approved tac ops but im not sure if they should be included here or if I need to buy another pack or something.

thanks in advance!

Dillemma after 2,5 years of wasted PhD - I like what I do but I cant in my actual lab

Hi there,

I'm doing a PhD in STEM in spain (AI applied to robotics), and I'm now starting to write my dissertation but I'm struggling badly, both with my mental health and with what I actually have to write about.

I've had a rough run in my lab. I started my thesis without a clear topic, just a vague idea from my PI, in a lab with no prior experience in AI for robotics and no hardware (I didn't even have a robot until the end of year 1). To keep it short: I suffered a lot. I wasted a lot of time on things unrelated to any real topic, partly pushed by my PI and partly from my own attempts to find something worthwhile. This went on until year 2, where I tried several directions (robot simulations, etc.) that went nowhere, while my PI kept pushing me toward projects that had nothing to do with AI at all. Finally, I collapsed at the end of year 2.

I spent six months at home with depression. Partway through that leave, I slowly started working again and eventually found the topic I actually enjoy. Since coming back, I've pushed hard and made some progress, but most of my time is gone (spent just building infrastructure from scratch) and I don't have much left to give. The pressure is crushing me.

So, in short: I don't have real contributions to write up, just a few lessons learnt on the way but no contributions. And I'm not okay, I'm on antidepressants just to get through the day, and my mental health is in really bad shape.

The best analogy I have is that they dropped me in the middle of the Amazon and told me to find my way back to civilization naked, without even a knife.

------------------------------------

That said: I like this new topic, and I know I want to be a researcher. But I don't think I can get there from where I am now, in this lab. I did learn how to find a gap in the literature and build a research direction, but I never got the chance to actually build up the broader skills ( theoretical, practical and even social) that I should have by now.

A labmate who started two years after me is now using the infrastructure I built as the first student in the group, and she's making huge progress. I'm genuinely happy for her (and glad something I built is useful), but my own situation keeps getting worse, and I feel paralyzed unable to keep working.

So my question is: can I start a new PhD somewhere else? Could I frame my time here as "research assistant" experience on my CV instead of a PhD attempt? I know that leaving a PhD program tends to be seen as a red flag, but at this point, it feels like the only way to survive: step back, recover, and try again properly. My ideas about what I want are clear.

33 [M4F] #online Small town guy looking for a curious and outdoorsy woman

Hi there,

So I tought giving a try here for first time and see what comes out!

I'm looking for a genuine connection that will lead to a healthy relationship in the future. Said that, I dont like to rush at all and I like things that come naturally. Not closing to any place or region.

**PERSONALITY:** Personality wise I consider myself a very easy going person that enjoys almost any nice plan. I do like making people laugh and I think I'm good at it with a bit of sillyness and a bit of acid humour. Friends tend to tell me that I look very calm from outside and very nervous from inside, but after all, a positive person. I'm a very very curious person that likes to learn as much as I can, constantly asking questions about all and I enjoy light or deep conversations. I have a bit of social anxiety so I tend to be introvert at first but very natural.

**AESTHETICS:** I would say I'm a average guy, slightly overweighted but sporty (1,72m-80Kg), I usually run 3 times a week, go for hikes and sometimes do some chalistenics at home. Slightly bald though I usually cut my hair very short, short beard and I dont have any tattoes or piercings. When it comes to dressing, its very casual, usually I like using oversize shirts, hats, long socks.... Skate-surfer dressing style? (I'm not an expert but you can imagine haha)

**HOBBIES:** uuughh LOTS! for naiming some of them: I love photography, specially night and landscape, I love crafting things and painting. I participate in a local astronomy club and usually give small workshops in nearby towns. As I said before I do like sports and being outdoors, specially trekking but I also have stay home moments to watch movies or series and sometimes play games. Cooking is another hobby that I enjoy pretty much, as Im spanish and gastronomy here is an institution haha

**WORK/LIFESTYLE:** Right now I'm a PhD student in robotics, hopefully finishing by february of next year. I do work lots of hours a day because of this reason but I value a lot time over money so once I finish lets say that I would like to somehow try to prioritize time in my life. I dont smoke, drink very little and enjoy being with friends on weekends. We usually play board games when rainy days and on summer we usually make a 1-2 week trip on our vans to go trekking, exploring small towns and relax.

**WHAT I VALUE IN A PERSON:** I like intelligent people who are able to have a nice conversations about anything it comes, if you are also a curious and cultured person we will get along very well. I’m looking for kind, empathetic, emotionally available people who genuinely listen and show interest. Self improvement and having hobbies are also a BIG plus, specially if they are related to nature or being outdoors. About ages: something like 25-36? aesthetic wise I dont have any preference as long as you arent a very into shopping.

Pretty much a normal person right?

Hopefully, this organized but unorganized list of things may spark the interest in a kind woman? Who knows... I wait in the other side!

See you!

Reasonable salary for a AI (robotics) engineer in zurich?

Hello,

I've got an offer from zurich for a AI/robotics engineering position in a zurich based company. I'm a robotics engineer with a masters in robotics and PhD experience and I feel quite lost about how much should I ask since this is my first "serious" job offer, before I had student/practice salaries in spain, which are far way smaller that in switzerland. They asked me how much I'm specting to earn as the position could vary in responsabilities depending the salary, where I rather play conservative and start in the lowest salary range for someone with my profile.

I have been investigating myself about salaries in switzerland but I dont see consensus at all in positions related to mine + I'm not use to big salaries in general so I dont know what to say to them. Specially when it comes to a city that big as zurich, where I guess cost of living is way higher than places around.

Please, someone can give me any reasonable salary for a engineer with a masters in zurich? Thanks in advance to everyone

EDIT: thank you everyone for answering, I leave the edit for the ones that may come after me with the question. Seems a legit salary is somewhere over 90-110K

Retreat, gather forces and attack again or crawl in the mud to get the Dr tittle?

Hello,

I am a fourth-year PhD student in Europe specializing in AI applied to robotics. I am facing a dilemma regarding my inmediate future. I have three months until my dissertation deadline, but I feel unable to finish and am seeking advice.

During my second year, I took a six-month medical leave for depression. I am on a three-week leave again, due to total burnout, caused by external factors (within my department and with my director) and personal challenges, (gaps in my knowledge and organizational difficulties). My work previous to the medical leave is worthless since I changed the topic.

My main issue is that my department has no prior experience in my field. I have been left to conduct my research entirely alone and without proper hardware. This forced me to spend a significant amount of time fixing technical issues rather than doing actual research. Essentially, the department expects me to establish a new research line now that AI in robotics is trending.

Recently, a world-renowned roboticist visited our university and came to the deparment to see how we work. When I explained my project, he immediately noted that my robot lacked a specific sensor (the same sensor I asked to my PI two years ago, only to be denied due to cost). Later, in his general speech, he stated: "Research in robotics cannot be done without proper hardware, you cannot just take a robot and do research, it needs some investing". Exactly the source of 50% of the issues in my research.

I currently have no publications and no time to produce any. I am struggling to begin writing the dissertation because I am unsure how to frame my work, and I feel like a fraud. I am seriously considering leaving the program to focus on strengthening my skills, with the possibility of applying to a new program maybe next year, better informed. However, a colleague has encouraged me to push through, arguing that obtaining the title is the most important outcome.

I would appreciate your perspective, as I feel broken and lost.

Defending a PhD without publication in a "easy" field

Hi there,

I'm a 4th year student in STEM in a small university in a topic where there are lots of publications every year.

I'm gonna keep it short, the thing is that I have no publications and I need to present my thesis in about 3 months, and I dont feel like I will get any publications because of the many issues I have and had in general with my actual project.

I have checked the university requeriments for doctorands and it says I need to have at least 3 publications. I have asked my PI about my concerns on this and his answer is all but calming. He is completely chill about this and seems that he doesnt care about it at all, and I dont know what to do honestly. Im super anxious, and to be honest, I'm not even sure if he knows about the rules.

Has anyone defended a thesis with no papers, in a field where is not that "difficult" to publish? I started writing and I dont know what to even write since I dont have anything published.
