Is it ethically responsible to maintain good relationships with people who you fundamentally disagree with?

So I was scrolling tiktok (as one does) and came across a video of a woman asking whether people are less interested in socializing/ community/ etc because of moral injury (creator- Lisa Kays). The idea being that after the covid lockdowns some people were less, let's say responsive, than others to the situation (or maybe more) and those interactions then caused caused a sort of disillusionment with the activity of maintaining social bonds with others. She also mentioned Gaza as an example, not being able to justify continuing to interact with people who hold an opposing position.

After hearing this I was reminded of the story of Daryl Davis, a black man who befriended a member of the kkk and that friendship eventually resulted in some members denouncing the organization and leaving it.

There are many polarizing topics in our society that seemingly prompt us to 'choose a side', and both sides are chosen and strongly defended.

So my question is this, should we make an effort to maintain community and social relationships with people who think so differently from how we do that their views feel like a moral attack?

On the one hand, trying to interact with someone who has fundamentally different views than you can be an exhausting experience. Sometimes it can even be a dangerous one. In some instances it can injure our own mental/ emotional/ physical well-being, and from a certain perspective this activity can be positioned as a form of self harm. On top of that, it is not our personal responsibility to police other's thoughts, we are not their keepers. Engaging with someone with only this as motivation can be positioned as not having a genuine desire to interact with them, or can even be seen as dehumanizing if you're engaging with the ideology and not the person holding it.

On the other hand, not interacting with those who disagree with us doesn't make them disappear. They will still exist in our communities/ families/ workplaces/ voting booths/ etc. and might even be people we love. Not trying to interact with people in spite of how they think could create more social division and strife and foster conditions for a complete lack of empathetic engagement with difference, which can also be seen as dehumanizing in that groups of people come to be ideologically reduced to a monolith. In addition, everyone has had a 'bad take' and how we think about and interact with the world around us continues to change over time. In someone might be holding very harmful views, but might not understand or appreciate how or why they are harmful. At the same time, real harm can come from enacting some ideas. However, diversity also requires that we allow for differences to exist, and how is that line drawn? Not to mention that critical engagement comes through dialogue and if I am absolutely certain that my views are always correct and I know everything about everything there is no room for growth.

So how do you reconcile this? How can we engage with difference without it leading to some kind of authoritarianism? (Fascism is only favoured by those on the 'winning' side after all, and power changes hands). Where do things like empathy/ love/ patience/ etc. fit in with addressing (or not addressing) what you see as potentially harmful rhetoric? Should ideas be upheld at the expense of community or should social cohesion take precedence? Or does this binary not accurately reflect lived experience?

To be clear, I'm not asking about actual positions on contentious issues, but about the act of interacting with those who see things differently from how we do. This is meant to be a friendly discussion about how we deal with difference :)

I found Teucer and Tonia!

It’s so cool that we can interact with them after hearing about them for so long!! I still remember Teucer from Childe's story quest way back when. And they’re just chilling at their house in Morepesok.

Which of these would you recommend watching first?

I haven't been keeping up with many new crdamas this year and want to start back up with a really good one. Like if I only watched one, which would you suggest I go with?

My current options are:

Blossoms of Power

The First Jasmine

Unveil: Jadewind

Road to Splendor

A Splendid Match (is the FL playing the same character in this as her other roles? I didn't really enjoy those characters)

Vendetta of An (this is older I think, but it was on my list)

I've heard good and bad things about all of them so it's kind of hard to pick. Any help would be appreciated!

Reddit autotranslating posts?

So I wrote a comment in Italian on my phone a couple of days ago, but just now I saw that on the desktop it had been auto-translated into English. On the phone app it's still in Italian.

I have been trying to improve my Italian by doing things like setting my phone to Italian language to increase my exposure, but my computer is in 'English'. Maybe it is translating everything according to the language preferences set on the device? But the English comments on my phone remain in English despite my phone being 'Italian'. This kind of threw me for a loop as I'm logged into the same account on both devices. I'm no tech wizard though, so this could be a me problem.

Also just days ago one of the Italian language subs I follow had posts in Italian for me, but now they're in English with a little translate icon beside it. Which is kind of annoying because aside from the content, I'm also there to improve my Italian comprehension.

It's not the end of the world, but it does kind of mess with my language exposure strategy. I guess it could be useful in a broader sense, like you could have a conversation with anyone in any language... but as a language learner I'd the the option to translate from the original text, not to it.

Has anyone else noticed this? If so, how is it impacting your language learning journey?

What is the highest number of 5 stars you have ever gotten in a 10 pull?

I want to get a picture from the community for how common this actually is. I hear about people getting double five stars all the time and see it happen in streams, but it’s never happened to me in the five-ish years I’ve been playing.

So, what is the highest number of 5 stars have you ever gotten in a single 10 pull?

Where do you log off in game… and why is it by a crafting bench?

Even though I know I can log off anywhere and the game will be the same when I open it again, I always teleport back to a city before I log off. And I specifically go beside the crafting bench. I usually go to the city that’s closest to what I’m doing eg. Quests/ domains/ farming/ etc. but there’s no reason for it. Like it would take just as much time to teleport the next time I log in.

I’m not the kind of player to wait for resin to cap, so it’s not like I’m rushing to condense it when I log on again, sometimes I don’t even have enough to condense anything. Maybe it’s just muscle memory from older games I used to play where you had to reach a save point before closing the game? I don’t know.

Does anyone else do this? Or have a ‘home base’? Or is it just me

Can bad philosophy exist or are there just bad philosophers?

If philosophy is praxis and emerges through contact, would bad philosophy be my failure to effectively connect with my surroundings?

If philosophy is theoretical and exists as a mental exercise, am I just too dumb to be good at it?

If I forgo the Cartesian dualism, am I holistically a philo-failure in how I exist and move through the world?

Wait... I'm the problem in all cases (or maybe the solution 🥸)

UPDATE: Zucchini flower ferment

30ish hours on the counter

This is an update to the post I made 7 days ago about the potential of fermenting zucchini flowers, found here, and I wanted to let you guys know how it went!

First of all, thank you for all of the tips and suggestions, they were very helpful and I referred back often.

I did a couple of experiments. In the picture above: jar 1- cooled fig leaf water with citric acid, jar 2- salt water brine (1 tbsp/ 2 cups), jar 3-salt water brine with vinegar, jar 4- just fig leaf water (poured in hot from the pot), jar 5- fig leaf water (hot) with citric acid.

As was suggested, I also added some fig leaf bits in for the tannin, those are the green leaves in the jar, as well as crushed cardamom pods and lemon peel (I only had grated on hand so you probably can't see it). The lemon and cardamom are in all jars except jar 4.

The ones that held up best were in the salt water brine, they kept the most decent texture. And while I expected the hot fig leaf water (jar 4) to disintegrate (as it's getting kind of translucent), it actually held up better than the hot fig leaf water with citric acid (jar 5), which started getting a bit slimy into the third day.

I also tried one with salt water brine, peppercorns, and bay leaves (not pictured) and they held up ok, but the taste was kind of... briny.

I'd say the one that tasted the best to me was the salt water, vinegar, lemon peel (jar 3). I love lemon slices with salt and it was a similar taste. But I'd say jars 1-3 turned out pretty successfully. There was a discernible texture and the colour held up decently as well. I didn't try fig leaf water with salt, but I think that might turn out ok too.

I'm putting them in the fridge today after leaving them on the counter for 36- 40 hours on the counter.

Also, side note. I got into the fig water thing after fig leaves were recommended for the tannin in the previous post, so I looked up some articles and found that fig leaf extract might extend dairy shelf life, here. I'm not dealing with dairy obviously, but I thought I'd play around with it anyway since I had the leaves.

Thank you again for all of the great suggestions! It was a fun little experiment.

Can anyone recommend Sicilian language movies or tv shows?

I know very little Sicilian and would like to watch some shows or movies to help me get used to the cadence and maybe gain some vocabulary.

I have watched Commissario Montalbano and Incastrati on Netflix, are there any other shows or movies that I can check out?

Did you pick Aether or Lumine, and does it impact your experience of the story?

I picked Lumine. It doesn’t really change the story for me, but for example, I can see how something like the bathhouse scene in the Mikawa fesitval event might have felt a bit different if it were Aether in the bathhouse instead of Lumine (as it’s more common socially for women to bathe together in a bathhouse). Generally speaking though, I feel like the MC is more of a self insert and it doesn’t really matter, especially because they’re not voiced most of the time. But what do you think?

Does it change how you see the relationships MC has with other characters? Or how they move through the world? Or how you see the abyss twin? Or is the the same for you no matter who you pick?

Does any one have experience fermenting zucchini flowers?

I have a lot of zucchini flowers this year and was playing with the idea of trying to ferment or preserve them in some way. They're very delicate though, so I don't know how feasible that is.

I was thinking of putting them in a simple syrup or something... maybe with some citric acid? Does anyone have experience with this? Is this doable? Any tips or tricks would be much appreciated.

What is your research elevator pitch?

This is an oldie but goodie. For those new to it, the premise is that you're in an elevator and you have to explain your research to someone before the elevator reaches the next floor. So it has to be short, sweet, and compelling enough that they might consider getting off with you to ask a follow up question.

Mine is always a work in progress but right now it goes something like this:

I am interested in how we imagine reality through our interactions with objects

What's yours?

What's a movie where the acting was so good that it outshone bad writing?

I'm thinking of a situation where the writing of the film had plot holes or poorly written dialogue, but the actors did such a great job portraying their character that it almost didn't matter.

The film itself doesn't have to be an overall masterpiece, but an example of where an actor took a questionable screenplay and turned it into an amazing performance.

What are some of the best regional food spots you've been to?

One of the great things about living in/ around Toronto is the diversity of people who live here. And also that some of these people are amazing cooks and open restaurants for us to eat the food they make. When I describe Toronto to people who've never been here, I always include that you can get great food from almost any country.

I recently went to Messina Bakery (on Scarlett) and was delighted to find these mini ice creams that I loved when I was in Sicily. And they were just as good as the ones I had there!
