Cross Reddit Collab : Audio Visualization Monthly Megathread - Post a track / inspire a video.

Hi all, /r/vjing mod here:

I'm trying something new to spur some creative collaborations across reddit music production subs and visual art / creative coding / new media subreddits.

Now that Reddit supports video comments / replies, I thought it could be a fun opportunity to a collaboration call / response format.

The idea:

Musicians, dj's, producers or anyone musically inclined: post a link to a track or mix that you have rights to and are open to having visual accompaniment to.

VJs / live visualists / creative coders: post a response to a track that inspired you with a video comment, or link to an interactive experiment you made!

If you are an AV Act that makes your own music or video, feel free to post here too for inspiration.

All genre's, styles, techniques, skill levels are welcome.

This isnt a contest!

There's nothing to win (unless anyone knows sponsors haha) other than learning of new musical or visual act, meeting a potential collaborator and making awesome stuff and having a good time:

Stay curious and creative!

Below are some subs I'll be cross posting / sharing this with - feel free to cross post to any i've missed:

Music Subs:

* /r/Songwriting/
* /r/djing/
* /r/musicproduction
* /r/edmproduction/
* /r/beatmakers/
* /r/shareyourmusic

Visual Subs:

* /r/vjing
* /r/creativecoding/
* /r/videosynthesis/
* /r/TouchDesigner/
* /r/maxmsp/
* /r/video_mapping/

Mod's of any of the above subs - sorry if this comes across as spammy!

I thought about asking permission from each of ya'll but that felt onerous and slow (ask forgiveness etc etc). If you have suggestions or any feedback do not hesitate to reach out! Was thinking of something like this monthly pinned on /r/vjing where i have video comments enabled - would love if yall could help spread the word!

Stress Testing new Audio Analysis for Fabric.graphics

Some of you might be aware I've been building an open source replacement for Quartz Composer over at https://fabric.graphics.

Thanks to Toby Spark we have some new audio analysis, and with some recent work with Satin 2.0 (the underlying Swift rendering engine) we have a lot of cool tools, spot light / projectors, shadows, parametric geometry, and with new nodes and optimized rendering we can hit 120 FPS doing audio analysis, custom geometry, procedural camera moves, reactive lighting and physically based shading / instanced rendering all with out having to learn what a fucking pop or chop is and why anyone would name it that.

Stay tuned :)

Satin 2.0 - Swift Package for advanced Metal Rendering for macOS/iOS/visionOS

Satin 2.0 - an updated fork of Reza Ali's Satin engine - is available for macOS, iOS and visionOS via Swift Package

https://github.com/Fabric-Project/Satin

Satin borrows inspiration from Processing, ThreeJS, OpenFrameworks etc, and follows a setup/update/draw style paradigm.

2.0 brings a ton of updates, including updated Material rendering to support deferred rendering / lighting, updated shadow engine that supports all light types, including projectors/cookies and gobos.

Theres post processing support out of the box, including vertex based motion vectors for decent screen space motion blur, as well as fast separable deep bokeh / depth of field rendering.

Satin 2.0 supports Slug text rendering thanks to Warren Moores MetalSlug port which we adapt to Satin's engine.

Theres a ton of bug fixes and performance improvements too, as well as a code signed compiled example app for folks to check out, which goes through a variety of techniques and setups, including compute, model loading, IBL lighting, parametric geometry, lighting setup and more.

Would love community feedback and for folks to check it out!

Satin is part of the Fabric.graphics project for bringing back an open source graphics stack like Quartz Composer to Apple ecosystem. Satin is the underlying engine we are building :)

Check it out and join us on discord if you are interested!

Cheers,

New Megathread idea - VJ Clip remix / call and response video thread!

Hi ya'll.

Reddit is soon launching a new feature allowing video embeds in comments in threads, and i can't think of a better community to play with that feature. I've turned it on for all users, and in theory it launches on the 11th of this month (next week).

https://www.reddit.com/r/modnews/comments/1tpa9p1/launching_video_in_comments/

Was thinking of a few fun creative prompts (not in the AI sense) where folks could respond with a video comment they made if they wanted to try share their work with the community.

We could do this a few ways

a) a text prompt - make a short VJ clip to any track that features xyz (a glow, a trope (tunnel, spinning geometry), an effect (glitch it up, blur it up, collage it up, a mood (upbeat) or vibe (sexy) , or style - typography)

b) share a video - and let the community remix it however they want

c) choose a music track to VJ to.

Option a is sort of 'easiest' to run with, and allows for the most interpretation and least amount of effort, but the other two could be fun.

What do ya'll think?

Weekly, monthly? We could also vote on the prompt or idea too??

Would be nice to see some more shares of content / mixes!

Inaugural June Vibe Coded Software Mega Thread! Share your Vibe coded tools!

Hi folks, one of your mods here!

Going to try a new tactic to help keep the sub organized and focused and help with the complaints on AI related content.

Each month, we will have a dedicated pinned thread for sharing vibe coded software, both for both new open source and commercial tools that are primarily vibe coded together.

The goal is to have a place to share creative tools for folks who are new to software dev or new to the scene (or both!), looking to get feedback, hock their wares and spread news without the sub getting too noisy with constant vibe coded announcements.

Please let me know how the community responds, and point folks to this thread to share their wares!

Hey VJing - Mod here:

With the advent of GenAI and LLM's we're seeing an uptick of a certain type of low effort, generated content / spammy posts. Some users have privately reached out and suggested adding flair for:

  • Gen AI related video content / VJ Packs
  • Vibe coded apps / projects

The idea being users can understand the type of content they are interacting with and ignore or filter out stuff they may not want to see, and also give context to users who want to engage with it.

The goal isn't to flag or call out using certain tools or folks exploring coding, or using generative ai to make visuals, but simply to inform users and keep quality high, and dissuade farming for imaginary internet points on Vjing. I certainly dont want to ostracize anyone for using new tools and techniques, but we do need to adapt to all the low effort spam being posted.

As a quick stop gap, Ive updated some of the flairs for posts, and made posts require flairs. Let me know suggestions for Flair types i may have missed. I removed specific software from the list - there were a lot missing, and we don't want to play favorites, and listing all is cumbersome. LMK how that feels.

I've also made the AI flair 'assignable' by users, though that might backfire?

Let us know what you all think.

Cheers.

--- Update

I realize i may not have been clear enough in my original language. The majority of the low effort content we are looking to avoid / regulate is:

  • low effort for sale content packs and promo's being spammed here and elsewhere
  • low effort VJ apps for sale which barely work and are spammed here and elsewhere

I want to make it clear that everyone is welcome to share work however they see fit.

Theres been a real uptick of that content, and while downvoting works, users have reached out and noticed a change in the quality of content making it to the front page, which is what motivated the post.

to that end, it was suggested we add a assignable 'promo' flair flair in lieu of the AI tag being assignable. I'll make that change now :)
