Being in a society vs volunteering: which do employers value more?

Between studies, commuting and other responsibilities don’t have a lot of time in my week. I want to join a society (and potentially a subcom) AND volunteer, but i definitely don’t have enough time to do both.

I know it largely depends on the degree/field you intend on entering, but let’s presume the volunteer work & society are both related to my field.

Any advice appreciated, cheers

Are tattoos seen as unprofessional in the 2026 workplace?

For context, I’m a uni student studying science and I’m strongly considering getting a job with the government after graduation (so white collar-ish?). However, I’m concerned that if I get the tattoos I want (on my upper arms) it’ll impact my job prospects negatively.

A lot of the pages talking about this online seemed to be a few years old, so I was hoping for more up to date advice. Anything is helpful!

Term 1 electives that are fairly chill?

Got a free elective spot coming up next year, and I'm shopping around for a subject that's a fairly straightforward HD/D. I'm trying to see what UNSW students have said in the past, but all the posts are like 3/4/5/6 years old lol and are really out of date.

Anyone got recommendations? Bonus points if there are no in-person assessment tasks, they give me hives.

Effectiveness of non-stimulant medication?

I'm currently on Ritalin (I've got a prescription for a prolonged released, and a prescription for a shorter release), and I'm definitely finding it helps me focus immensely.

However, I'm starting to realise I'm an impulsive person (surprise surprise), and it can be difficult to resist the temptation to take more than I'm supposed to. I hate feeling this impulse, and I hate the fear of "did I take too much?", or "am I harming my health just so I can survive in the short run?".

It makes it difficult that I don't have any prescribed dosages for a given time period (other than a maximum limit). I feel like having "dealer's choice" where I take "however much I need" puts me in a position to be vulnerable to my worst impulses. I wish that I just needed to take a certain dose every day at the same time, like my antidepressant medication.

This has led me to feel that non-stimulant medication might be better for me in the long run. However, because I'm a university student (and deeply, deeply require ADHD medication to perform), I feel at a loss of what to do.

For anyone who has taken non-stimulant medication before (or is currently on it), how do you feel the effects compare to stimulant medication? On the non-stimulants, is your function noticeably improved in comparison to being unmedicated?

I've got an appointment with my psych in 2 months, so I've got time to decide what I want to pursue before I see them. Any and all advice would be appreciated.

Summer term gen ed recommendations?

I’m doing a degree in the faculty of science, so I can’t do any of the science/medical ones 😔 anyone got gen ed recommendations for the Summer term outside of that?

I was thinking about doing the Greek Myth one, but I’m just concerned about how much time they’d give you for assessments vs how much time you actually get to learn the material.

Do Summer term classes change the assessment tasks from the full term offering of the same class?

Graduate role -- good grades but no work experience?

Hi everyone, I hope this is the right place to post this. I'm currently doing a Bachelor of Environmental Management, and I'm really, really enjoying myself. The kind of things I'm studying and learning about are things I want to be involved in for the rest of my life.

As of late, I've been kind of worried about my job prospects once I graduate. I currently have an overall average mark of 90 (an HD in Australia), I'm planning to keep that grade up for the rest of my studies, and I'm also going to do Honours.

The problem is, I'm pretty much a homebody. I've got people I'm friendly with in class, but I mostly just: go into the labs/tutorials, go home to study/watch recorded lectures, and complete my assignments. I'm not part of clubs, I don't have a job (I'm receiving a support allowance from the gov), and I haven't done any volunteering in a while. I've had jobs in the past, but these have been part-time retail jobs.

If I graduate with high marks and first-class honours, but have little job experience, am I in for a rude awakening once I graduate? One of my professors said to reach out to her if we wanted to be a volunteer assistant of some kind, but I've been on the fence about doing this because I feel like I don't know enough yet.

Sorry for the long and somewhat ramble-y post, no one in my personal life is in the sciences or environmental field in any way, so I hoped this community would be able to give some pointers.

Any advice is helpful! Ty for reading

15 hours on coursework per subject a week?

For the subjects I'm doing this term, the Course Outlines all say that they expect students "to spend 15 hours of learning per week, including class contact hours, self-directed study, and preparation and time spent on all assessable work."

I was wondering how reasonable you guys felt this recommendation is? I'm on Youth Allowance so 45 hours a week on coursework is doable. I'm trying to do really well this term, so any advice (especially from graduates) would be appreciated.

I'm just not sure how to divide my time up to fulfil these requirements (studying 1 subject a day, or multiple short chunks? doing flashcards, mindmaps, practice tests brain dumping? Watching lectures once or multiple times? Idk man)

why do some lecturers insist on torturing their students

the lecturer is not only forcing us to do a group project worth a chunk of our grade, but is also "randomly" assigning groups with the logic that "we need to make more friends". Hooray! Now there's a 99% chance I'll be babysitting one or more of the following:

a)an international student who barely speaks english

b)a person who somehow always has shift/extracurriculars/commitments and can literally never meet to discuss the assignment or do any work

c)someone who's only interested in passing and puts in minimal work

Can lecturers stop punishing students who actually want to do well by forcing us to work with complete morons. Inb4 someone chimes in with "this is what you have to deal with in the work place" -- in the work place I'll actually be getting paid. Right now I'm taking on debt just to get fucked in the ass. please please please please tell me how to take notes on lectures

beyond doing flashcards for terminology and concepts, i genuinely dont know how to do notes. i just like.... rewrite the wording but adjust the formatting of the information they give so its in a format that makes sense to me. but i struggle with rewording the text. so its not actually transformative, and i dont know how to make notes such that they are useful to me. what even makes notes useful???? Am i supposed to go back to them again? bros im so lost

The HER app is genuinely unusable without a subscription

For those of you who don’t use Her, free users are only able to view a limited number of users who have liked their page per 24 hours. Free users also have a limited number of likes they can send to other users.

The problem is, 95% of my “likes” are men, women who are 20 years older than me, and nonlesbians (my profile says i’m exclusively les4les). So I’m literally only able to view like 5 of these profiles before i run out of free views 🫠 and a subscription for Her Platinum IS 30 DOLLARS A WEEK.

I’m so tired yall 😔 any commiseration is appreciated cuz it genuinely feels so lonely and irritating

Gen Z lesbians: how do you craft your dating app bio?

Currently in the process of creating my dating app profile and guys im STRUGGLINNGGGG. I think in terms of pictures ive got a good mix of: flattering, but unedited photos of me that actually show what i look like, photos of my interests, and a photo of me at a halloween party (to show im not a hermit).

but i genuinely have no clue how to begin writing my bio. not to be shady but i feel like a lot of material talking about this online is like... for the 35+ audience. which is fine!! even millennials deserve love. but to girls my age (early 20s) i dont want a coworkercore bio, or one that feels inert and without personality, bc i feel that wont connect w them (it wouldnt with me).

i ALSO wanna indicate my feminist positions and i dont know how to say that without seeming like a libfem.

Sorry if ive made a faux pas here yall, millenial lesbians feel free to drag me. but seriously please HELPPPP. any advice is appreciated!!

How to get on the science Dean's list?

Hey, guys, I'm an undergrad student in my first year of my science degree. I just used the MyPlan method to find out my CWAM ahead of tomorrow's grade release, and it's 90.500.

My goal for 2026 is to make the Dean's list, but it's difficult to find information with any specificity online, especially for science. Does anyone know what the minimum mark probably is to get onto it?
