Or have felt “gatekept” by vegans before*
I’m the one that made this controversial post.
I’m curious what specifically makes you feel that way.
My questions to you:
- What does gatekeeping mean to you?
- What did you say that made someone feel the need to “gatekeep” you, in your pov?
- What was said that made you feel like you were being “gatekept?”
- Do you see a difference between someone saying “that isn’t consistent with veganism” vs. “you’re not vegan”?
- Do you think there’s a way to point out inconsistencies without making someone feel pushed away?
- Are you vegan now?
Edit: Please read the whole thing. I can already tell some people in the comments did not. 🙄
- Gatekeeping: “You’re not a real vegan.” ❌
- Not gatekeeping: “This isn’t consistent with vegan principles let’s talk about it because X. ✅
- Rude: “You’re just making excuses because you don’t want to change.” ❌
- Not rude: “I also struggle with changing habits. What do you think could make it easier for you?” ✅
Let’s make that distinction clear first.
I know a lot of you won’t like this but if we actually care about reducing animal exploitation, we need to think about what gets more people there. You have to understand how people work! A LOT of people are selfish, don’t like rudeness, avoid discomfort and/or don’t like admitting they’re wrong. That’s just reality unfortunately. BUT a lot of people also have some level of concern for AT LEAST ONE animal. We need to bring that out.
Obviously this won’t apply to literally everyone. Some people out there are genuinely psychos (type of people who would send off to kill or eat their animals they claimed to “love” and have raised) or are too sensitive even if you’re being respectful (“you stated a fact about what happens to pigs in gas chambers?! BLOCK! I don’t want to hear about this!”) But I’m talking about most people who would engage with you, even if they’re being hostile at first, but are still willing to listen and address your points.
Remember that most vegans weren’t born vegan. Most of us had something that made us question our choices, learn more, and slowly become more consistent.
There’s a difference between making someone think about their actions and making them defensive. Accountability matters of course, but if the goal is animal liberation, we should focus on what actually gets more people moving in that direction.
Just wanted to remind everyone how important it is to have a community instead of always keeping to ourselves. Having spaces where we can support each other, inspire, share recipes, laugh at memes, keep each other grounded, and remind ourselves that we’re not alone is something EVERY vegan can benefit from!
It also helps keep us motivated, reduces burnout, and makes it less likely that people end up becoming pick-mes, exes, or antis. Plus, the more active we are across all kinds of vegan spaces (whether they’re for activism, fitness, recipes, memes, or support), the more likely we are to reach non-vegans and inspire them to check out veganism.

The people who claim vegan food could never meet or surpass meat in flavor/texture… why they act like the meat itself is carrying the flavor and texture when it's getting dragged across the finish line by salt, garlic, onion powder, paprika, marinades, sauces, smoke, herbs, rubs, glazes, brining, tenderizing, aging, braising, slow-cooking, resting, and enough fat marbling to be doing 90% of the group project. 😭 Funny how all the stuff doing the heavy lifting is vegan.
At the end of the day, they’re just arguing for the seasoning and cooking methods, not something that looks like it belongs in an evidence bag. 💀
Edit: I never said veggies taste good by themselves either. That also requires seasoning and cooking! That’s literally the point: the “good part” is the seasoning and technique, and the seasoning is vegan! And knowing how to cook is the technique!

“Vegan meat” is dubbed over “pizza” fyi.
What do you guys think of it?
I don’t think he’s vegan, but the more attention vegan and plant-based diets receive for ethical reasons, the better. Love him for this. ♥️
