She was up paranoid all night..

We care for my mother-in-law who has dementia amongst other things. She generally keeps her schedule and cares for herself under the stability we provide and then we take her to and from dialysis and ensure her shopping and laundry gets done for her. It’s gone on this way for a few years now. Last night was a stormy night from what I saw predicted before bed and posts on local subreddits this morning. This morning when I took her morning pills in around 3AM I did notice she was actually awake and looked tired. Her alarm goes off at 4AM to get ready for dialysis. She asked me if I knew what went on last night. I was sure she meant the storm and responded that way, but I guess she didn’t and went on to tell me she’d been up looking out the window all night because the neighbors motion sensor lights were going on and off. I’m not sure she understood they were motion sensored. But she goes on to tell me that she saw 2 people in the room across from hers even thought their blinds were closed. It leads me to believe she looked out that window a long time coming up with ideas. I asked her in the car if she was up “freaking herself out” and she said she was and went on about it. I told her the lights are motion activated and it was the wind from the storm, but she went on to ask how many dogs they have. It felt like she was still in the “story” when she asked that instead of writing it off with the reassurance I gave her.

About 2 years ago when she broke her hip and was in the hospital and then physical therapy center for a while, she went through what I figured was delirium. It hasn’t happened that we know of since she came home from there. But this reminded me of that. I like to think she has enough still there holding her to the ground that I don’t need to worry about her leaving the house to investigate or calling the cops because she said last night she didn’t wake us bc she knew we were already asleep. But that doesn’t comfort me much because the thought of her staring out her windows paranoid for hours is heart wrenching. I just don’t know what I should do to stop this now, night 1, and ensure it doesn’t escalate.
