I need recommendations for a bear home defense round. Yes, really.

I don't want to get too into specifics because it's always amazing how little info Reddit needs to dox someone.

Bear sightings are rising (after decades of no evidence at all) in my area. I live in an isolated area in a small cluster of houses. Next to our small clearing, there's woods/creeks/ravines that lots of animals treat as a highway to avoid humans and then often pop up through our yards to cross over into the next ravines. Given the combination of very old humans, very young humans, and a big mish-mash of pets that all spend time in their yards, I have concerns about my neighbors being outside, not realizing they got between a cub and mamma, and not being able to get back in the house fast enough to avoid an attack. I'd like to have a rifle/carbine/SBR/whatever in a lockup next to the door that could be grabbed in a hurry if a bear is spotted. If the bear wanders off on its own, live and let live. If the bear thinks one of the grandmas living next door or one of their great grandkids needs smacked around and gnawed on, well, then I'd like to be able to do something more useful than throw a rock.

I'd prefer (though it's not required) a round that can easily be built into an AR upper just to reduce what I need to buy. If there's no such thing, then either a semi-auto or a bolt/break/lever-whatever action is fine. Longest realistic shot would be 75 yards. If bear is any farther than that and it's not in our little clearing and not a threat to anyone. This is for eastern black bears. Yes, I know having a black bear attack is very uncommon but it does happen and my neighbors are unusually unable to do anything about it if it does happen.

I need a recommendation for a weather station that may not exist

This will be my first weather station. I have a set of uncommon requirements and I'm not sure if there's a commercial product that ticks all my boxes:

  • MUST work entirely locally without reliable access to the internet. I'm rural enough that the internet can take a vacation or something for a week from time to time. My WiFi network stays up, but the link to the outside world goes down.

  • MUST have a always-on local display. I do not want to have to find my phone to load an app or check a self-hosted website from my laptop. I want a display I can stick on the wall that always shows the information I care about.

  • The information I'm most interested in is outdoor dewpoint followed closely by inside dewpoint. Yes, I know these could be calculated from temp and RH but, again, I just want something I can glance at as I walk by.

  • An anemometer with direction would be nice, but not required, as would the sensors required for it to display WBGT.

  • A rain gauge would also be nice but TBH just a luxury as I have one I can look out the window and see.

  • I can't spend more than $300 on this right now.

  • Bonus points if, when the internet is up, it'll pull a forecast and display forecast hi/low for today and tomorrow. To be clear, I understand this feature can only work while the internet is up.

Is there any commercial product that'll meet these requirements within my budget?

Anyone know where to buy Velcro hook-only wide sew on rolls?

For years, I've been buying cheap Huayy 4" and 6" wide hook-and-loop fastener rolls off Amazon and just throwing out the loop side. I'm feeling really uncomfortable with the waste. Does anyone know where I can buy just the hook side in 4" and 6" wide rolls?

Thanks!

Do I need to report a trust, IRA, 401k in Ohio?

I've done a ton of googling about this and can't come up with a specific answer. All the info I can find online specifically talks only about long-term care which is not what I'm needing. My wife and I get our health insurance and prescription coverage through Ohio Medicaid due to our income being below the Federal poverty line. For the first time, the renewal paperwork included a question asking about trusts.

My wife is the beneficiary of a revocable trust that contains her share of selling the family farm. None of the information I can find online talks about whether a revocable trust is required to be reported if all we're on is Medicaid health insurance.

The same thing goes for her IRA and 401k. Are they required to be reported in Ohio if we're only seeking health insurance, not long term care? Same situation here: I can only find information in the context of seeking long term care.

Anyone know?

Was Big Boy 4014 Broken Today?

I was at the Lorain, OH stop of 4014 today. I am confused by some of what I saw since I'm not a big train person and I figure yall can explain it to me. 4014 clearly had steam pressure up, as it blew its whistle a bunch and several metal snails on the roof were venting steam constantly. However, it also had two diesel electric locomotives behind it. When it moved off at the end of the stop, the diesel electrics were the ones making all the noise and 4014 never blew the water out of the cylinders before moving and never made any of the various hissing and chuffing noises every other steam locomotive I've ever heard made when it started to move.

Was 4014 broken and relying on the diesel electric engines to actually move? Is it just bad at moving at a walking pace and needed the modern engines to go that slowly? Something else?

I was considering going back up along the lake in late July when it comes through westbound to see it in motion between stops. However, if it's not actually capable of doing steam train things, that kind of loses attraction.

Thanks everyone!

Did Ford remove the website for parts lookup?

I swear until recently there was a Ford website that I could go to and look up parts by my VIN and then by looking through hundreds of parts diagrams until I found what I needed.

I can't find it now. Did Ford recently delete this resource or am I just struggling to find it?

Has Sonos Discussed Apple Silicon support of the Sonos S1 Controller App?

I'm still using the old first-gen Connects. I use the Sonos S1 Controller on my Mac laptop to select music. I'm now getting warnings about how support for Intel-architecture apps is ending and Sonos will need to update the app to Apple Silicon. Has anyone heard any rumblings from Sonos about whether they're going to actually update the app or if they're just going to pretend it isn't happening since they want to kill off S1 devices?

Schwalbe has "updated" the Big Apple and turned it into a completely different tire. I'd like something similar to what the Big Apple used to be: minimal or no tread, fat, relatively supple, and extremely well made. I need two sizes: 55-406 and 55-559. That's 20"x2.125" and 26"x2.125" if you're still measuring that way.

The Continental Contact Speed is pretty close in terms of spec but it doesn't come in the sizes I need.

Any suggestions?

I'm looking at the tool-swap system to be able to have both a string trimmer and the paddle/broom thing. They each say they're compatible with two different product numbers for the power head. I can't find a clear comparison of the differences between the two power heads (2825 vs 3016). Does anyone know?
