Something I love about the Hank/Walt garage scene

So for most of the show, when these 2 would interact Hank is portrayed as the more "dominant" person. He's shorter yea, but has a bigger/strong physical presence. He's loud, can be obnoxious, and just kinda trying to dominate the conversation. Even when he was laid out after being shot, they don't deviate too much from this dynamic.

The garage is the first time Hank meets Heisenberg, and I didn't really pay attention to the terrific way it's shot until this recent rewatch. There's a lot of angles where you see Hank but it's over Walt's shoulder, and kinda shot downwards so they really emphasize the height difference between the two. The dynamic has been totally flipped, it's Walt/Heisenberg that looks to be the more dominant one, even physically. And he's controlling the convo.

Even when Hank roughs him up a bit, Walt stays in control and that's when you see that look of confusion/fear in Hank's face.

Why was the timeline so hurried in this show?

So one thing I've always had a hard time believing is the time span of this show. From when Walt decides to start cooking to when it unravels it's basically just 1 year. And then he's basically in hiding for another and then comes back to wrap things up. 2 total years, but like 95% of the show/action is just over 1 year.

During the show you hear the characters bring up events that feel like they should have happened months ago and it's like "oh yea, that thing last week".

You can argue Walt was always on the clock due to his cancer, but I think you could have totally stretched out the first year events into 2, maybe even 3 years and it would still have been fine?

What is going on with the bathroom situation in the White residence?

Am I missing something or is there only one bathroom and it's the one attached to the master bedroom?

Seems unlikely but Hank was doing the doo doo there when he found out you know what, and it would be extremely rude (even for a family member) to stroll into the master bath if there was another bath outside. Esp for a doo doo.

Also during the time Walt was kicked out but came back to the house Skylar wouldn't let him use the bathroom so he peed in the kitchen sink. And otherwise kept asking permission to use the bathroom, which I thought was a weird thing to be doing if there was another bathroom available.

If indeed there is only 1 bathroom and it's the master, I've never seen that kind of layout before in a house of that size/age.

Am I just getting old or have comedies really gone to shit?

Growing up and into my 20s I feel like was the golden age of comedies. When I was a kid we had slapstick stuff like Airplane, Naked Gun, Police Academy, etc. And then basically anything Eddie Murphy. Into the 2000s and 2010s there was the frat pack and Judd Apatow type stuff.

Tropic Thunder came out almost 20 years ago and I don't think any movie has made me laugh as much then or since.

I'm not the type that just reflexively says everything was better in the past or whatever, but I feel like this definitely applies to comedy?

Thinking of picking Nikon 26mm 2.8 and Voigtlander 40mm f2 Septon - sanity check

With my Z5ii, I think these 2 basically being pancake lenses would be awesome for travel. The 26-28 / 40 split is prob my fav and I can shoot 99% of what I normally shoot with these.

I feel like these 2 give me the best combo of portability, IQ, and fun factor (specifically the Voigt). I can kinda run and gun with the 26mm but slow down and really focus on photography with the Voigt.

Having said that, I think this is the costliest option for a pairing of this sort. There's many permutations I can go for that would be cheaper. Like Nikon's own 28mm and/or 40mm, Viltrox, TT Artisan options. I think the Voigt is very unique, but maybe swapping in the Vitrox 26mm EVO or the Nikon 28mm is the smarter move?

Just want to get the community's thoughts on this potential pairing.

So what exactly was Hank's issue in/with El Paso?

Still trying to figure this out in the broad scheme of things. The man is obviously not a coward, he stood his ground in at least 3 shoot outs. He loved the job. And to top it off he seemed pretty unfazed by scenes of extreme violence and gore. He was basically laughing and taking pics of when Tuco's guy lost his arms.

But he sees Danny Trejo's head on a turtle and he needs to puke, so he was freaking out even before the IED went off.

And knowing all this happened Gomey still took the El Paso job like it was just a regular Tuesday while Hank couldn't bring himself to go back.

Why did Gus listen to Jesse after the whole cartel thing?

So Gus created and ran his entire meth empire to get the funds to eventually topple the cartel and exact revenge. He succeeds thoroughly. And yet he spares Walt because Jesse threatens not to cook for him if Walt is killed.

The urgency to make the type of money he was making and/or to maintain the purity of the product has been reduced because the cartel is gone. Why not just call Jesse's bluff and kill Walt considering what a huge liability he is?

Gus is a very strong guy and can play 4d chess as well. He knows Jesse can be easily manipulated which means keeping Walt alive is dangerous but also Gus himself could have used this in his favor and just made up some story as to why Walt had to be eliminated, basically that Walt was conjuring up some scheme to kill all of them or whatever. Jesse prob would have believed it, moved on, and continued to cook for Gus. But even if he doesn't, well Gus can just kill him too to tie up loose ends and I'm sure he could have found other cooks.

Just realized how idiotic the Skylar giving money to Ted thing was

Made for great story/drama. But obviously the right move was just writing a check in his name directly to the IRS.

Marie is an insanely tragic figure

Really hit me on this rewatch, maybe because it's my first rewatch after finishing BCS. She's what, around 40 years old? Tragically widowed due to the actions of her BIL. Prob never going to be able to have a normal (if any) relationship with her only sibling or her nephew/niece due to said BIL. And to top it off no children. Basically she's lost her entire family.

She'd be like mid 50s now, wonder what she'd be doing.

Did Walt essentially save Jesse's life in Season 2?

Specifically when he let Jane die.

I am rewatching the Fly ep and even Jesse echoes what Walt told him in S2, that giving a pair of junkies all that money would have meant they'd be dead within a week.

Is it possible for the USA to "inflate the debt away"?

Something I've been seeing more lately is the idea that the US gov't would tolerate or even welcome prolonged higher levels of inflation to essentially inflate the debt away. I understand the concept in theory, but not sure how it would be successful in practice.

If inflation stays high for long, the bond market would demand higher yields. So repayment costs for gov't would just keep going up. Also, a lot of gov't spending is explicitly or implicitly tied to inflation. Social security is pegged to CPI. Healthcare costs would rise so Medicare/Medicaid expenditures would have to as well. Even things like defense spending would have to rise with inflation.

So it seems like as long as the gov't is running deficits, inflating away the debt would just make the problem worse, but want to know what experts say about this.

Apollo, Rocky, Tommy, Adonis all wore the same shorts. Which one do you think had the least body odor?

Definitely not Rocky, he admitted his own apartment stinks. My money is on Adonis, he grew up wealthy and in a modern era, he probably has his skincare routine dialed in and uses fancy deodorants and stuff.

Rocky may be the world's worst father/father figure

Estranged from his actual biological son. Literally beats the hell out of the first guy he was a father figure to (Tommy). Then abandons and has no contact with the second guy (Steps). And then the third (Adonis). What the actual fuck?

If the lightning strike timing failed in BTTF, how long would Marty have been stuck in the past?

Not sure why I didn't think about this before, but the other day while watching BTTF III I realized Marty would have only been stuck in the wild west maybe 10ish years until Doc built the train time machine.

Kinda got me wondering how long it would have taken Doc to figure out a way to get Marty BTTF from the 1955 past if the clock tower lightning plan failed. I mean you'd think he'd eventually figure out a way to steal some plutonium or maybe sneak the DeLorean into a race track during a lightning storm and have Marty go around in circles doing 88.

Was Rocky present and "participating" when Adonis was conceived?

He was conceived in 1985, when Rocky and Apollo were hanging out a lot. This being this 80s, there were probably some crazy sex party orgy type things going on.

And as much as Rocky loved Adrian, a man nicknamed "Italian Stallion" is going to have voracious sexual appetite.

Begs the question, do you think Rocky was actually present and participating in the action?

Having to postpone home purchase indefinitely due to family illness, what to do with saved up down payment cash?

My wife and I (no kids) were targeting a home around the $800k range. We've saved up about $200k in a HYSA we were planning on using for the DP. We began house shopping a couple of months ago, but then last month I got the news my dad was diagnosed with cancer. The 5 year survival rate for his type of cancer is about 40%, but he had successful surgery and is doing chemo now and so far his doctor seems optimistic.

This leaves our home buying in a shaky situation. If my dad gets through this then we can look into buying again, but I mean maybe 4-5 years until the "green light"?

But if my dad doesn't make it, then we'd have to take care of my mom as she barely speaks English and really isn't capable of living on her own. Even then our home situation would be unsure. My parents' home is paid off, so you'd think the easy thing would be for my wife and me to move in with her, but they live in a smaller town without many (if any) jobs in our career fields. So we may actually have to move her in with us where we live currently, so then we'd be back to considering buying a place.

I guess my key personal finance question here is with all this uncertainty, what should we do with the cash? It's a decent chunk of change that I don't really want to keep outside the market if we end up having to postpone our purchase for years, but honestly I'm not sure.

Why wasn't Michael taking out the heads of the other families suicidal (literally or at least business/family wise)?

It feels like the only "legit" business (not personal) hit should have been Barzini since his family was moving in on the Corleones and he had been orchestrating the whole thing. Even Tattaglia, Don Corleone had entered a truce and made peace with him. It seems like violating such a thing would be a big problem in the Mafia world?

But Cuneo and Stracci, did I miss something? What business justification is there to take them out?

So after this, it's not like Michael controls the entire Mafia. There's still powerful families in Chicago, KC, San Francisco, back in Sicily. When they see Michael as being crazy enough to do something like this, wouldn't their top priority above all be to make him their first target and kill him? Or his ambition may turn against them in the future.

Beyond all that, how the heck could Michael be trusted to do business with? Even if the Mafia didn't band together to have him killed, it seems like he's not someone to be trusted to do business with and he'd just be ostracized, but he's thriving in that underworld in GF II and III.

Did Rocky have sexual relations with the pet shop owner (Gloria)?

I mean yea Rocky was going in there to predatorize Adrian, but there was also a weird sexual tension/energy with Gloria.

Tommy Morrison's performance in Rocky V is criminally underrated

First of all, he was the only nemesis in all of the Rocky/Creed movies that was an actual professional boxer AND a legit HW (Antonio Tarver was not a natural HW). So he lended a lot of realism to his role and the fighting sequences.

His acting was also really solid for a guy that hadn't acted before and I'd argue his role required more from him than any other Rocky/Creed nemesis besides Apollo.

I WISH there was another Michael Jordan in today's NBA

I know some youngsters say MJ would just be "another player" in today's NBA. Listen, I legit WISH that was true. It's been 28 or 23 years depending on which retirement you want to go on and I still miss watching him play. The breakaway dunks, the reverse layups, the hang time, the defense, the intensity, all of it. Even his picture perfect midrange jumper. I am not kidding, I would love for there to be another player that reminds me of him.

I overall liked and respected Kobe. No way did I think he measured up to MJ in any area, but he came the closest and more importantly he mimicked a lot of his moves even his mannerisms. So honestly watching Kobe was fun too and there were moments he reminded me of MJ, but he last played 10 years ago.
