...I thought it would be much cooler than it turned out to be.
Guess i gotta go 3x3 or 4x4.
This is with a Portta. Idk that I like the simplicity of the unit for this application. I'm thinking one of the more complicated systems would do better, or one that uses a software to control the output.
I've got an Extron QSS404, but I'm having trouble getting video to pass through it properly.
...to get a 32 inch to the third level, but i was worried about knocking over the second level tvs so I stopped.
I was able to manage the Trinny to tier 3 though!
That 80s tv would have been on but I don't have a coaxial splitter. Gotta go to Radioshack.
One step closer to my video wall...
Gonna start back up again.
Got some neat ideas for a crt-ddr-videowall. Should be a fun project!
2 - 32 inch
1 - 31 inch
3 - 27 inch
1 - 25 inch
1- 5 inch
Work in progress...
I recently got an Extron QSS404 unit to take a signal and split it across 4 tv sets.
My computer doesn't seem to recognize it. I'm using the Imagestar HD software that I got from Extron directly, opening the discovery screen, trying to dis ovee, and nothing.
I know my computer is aware of the device cause I've run the arp -a command with it plugged in and disconnected but the computer doesn't auto-recognize the unit like a USB device would be recognized though.
With that: 1 how am I supposed to configure the output of the unit if it isnt being "seen" over direct connection with crossover cable, and 2 is there a way to factory reset the unit without needing to do it through the ui?
Extron support has been great so far and I don't want to irritate them, hence, my reddit post
Oh man!
Power cable but, sides squished in a bit, screen resting on metal, and covered in dirt, sand, and organic debris.
Smells like mildew and the inputs seem to be beginning to rust.
Looks like it was also used as a seat for the homeless folks staying at this guy's yard.
Luckily, the scrappers weren't min/maxing and they left me about an inch of power cable to splice a new one on!
Wish me luck!!!
N64 w/ s-video out -> bnc adapter -> extron qss404 w/ dvi out -> vga adapter -> s-video adapter -> crt w/ s-video input
It makes sense in my head.
So a client has a very very heavy insulated door with an inside steel layer. It is a 16x7 with only 3 panels in a double track low headroom setup. 12 radius.
The weight is mostly the hurricane struts (180 or 190mph windload door).
She originally called me out for a tune up and hoping for an improvement.
Thing is, after lubricating the door, greasing the rail, and adding ONLY a quarter turn to one spring (maybe it didn't even need it), the opener refuses to close the door.
As panel 1 starts to come down the radius, because the panel is much taller than a 4 panel door plus the weight, the geometry of the straight edge around the curve here is creating enormous tension right before the weight shifts to a vertical orientation.
Even manually operating it, I could probably hang on the bottom strut.
I tried playing with the tension on both springs to find a good middle ground since they were different gauge springs, but it didn't work.
I tried simulating extra weight on the way down during force calibration and that didn't work.
The opener is a 81600 with I beam heavy duty rail, so the opener is ok.
My theory: they only have a half hp opener and their setup definitely warrants, at minimum, 3/4 hp. Because there are three panels only on a 12 radius, physics creates mega resistance until the weight of the panel shifts forward and "helps" pull the door down...but it has to get there first. Also, I think I "messed it up" by lubricating it. I believe the friction in the hinges allowed the door to maybe be "tighter" in a way, even though it isn't proper. But that wouldn't really make sense given I feel it is just the big panel and small radius.........but it was working when I got there.
I'm thinking a 3/4 horse can muscle through it.
What do you all think?
(I failed to weigh the door, sorry. Most in this area average about 335 or so, from 280 up to 360 and beyond in the fancy spots)
Thank you for reading. I hope other garage techs enjoy this puzzle.
EDIT: I told my client to check with the installer (a highly reputable local company, nothing bad to say about them) and see if they can come out and change the opener or make the adjustments necessary, cause i don't feel great charging her and the system was installed about 2 years ago. I told her to ask "if you put up a heavy duty I beam rail, why did you not put a heavy duty opener up?" Also, I don't want to get involved in this one any longer. Just a nightmare situation with zero feels-goods.
What a beast!
I mentioned "old tv" to an old friend, and she told me to swing by to snag a huge Sony projection screen. She wasn't sure what else was up there, so I had to check. Nomenclature is commonly incorrect, so, yea.
She certainly had a big ass projection screen there, but there was also this other Sony there.
A crt!
A Trinitron!
A decent size!
Oh! WOW speakers!
DAAAAAYUUUUUMMMM
Thing is, this mother-in-law sweet has been left open to the elements since Hurricane Ian, then Irma, then Milton...so much mold.
No way this set could work; prongs are corroded and everything is growing.
Anyhow, I was able to rest it on the ledge of the stairs and carry it the rest of the way down. These weren't regular stairs, though. These were the kind you need to calculate before taking a step.
Luckily, I was able to carry this thing down, but this 27in Trinny is probably the heaviest I've ever picked up as an adult, outclassing my 32in Panasonic and 32in Sanyo in weight. SO HEAVY!!!!! I had to set it down and take a break at the bottom of the stairs.
Sanded down the prongs slightly and she powered right up! You can see in the blank screen there is a sort column. When I run the scrolling test, the image appears to kinda go "away" and "closer". I wasn't able to notice it in Turok while running around.

I had to get a picture for the history books, documenting the reclamation struggle.
Lol, thank you. I enjoyed sharing this and I hope enjoy as well.
(If anyone in south Florida wants the Sony projection screen tv, ill help you move it to your transport vehicle. Pm me, free pickup, no idea if it works)
I tried looking online already and can't find much about the Datacard SD460 with laminator.
Does anyone have experience with one?
I'm about to pull the trigger, but want to make sure I'm not throwing money away.
Looks like a pretty solid unit, even though its 10yo.
So I just ordered an Extron QSS 404 from ebay without a power adapter.
I've not seen a mini din connector with this particular pattern before and was worried I wouldn't be able to find a suitable power adapter for it.
But I bought it anyway...I mean...there was only one on ebay...fomo?
Anyhow, I contacted a colleague of mine who owns a professional video studio, thinking he had a spare...nope. he referred me to the Extron 800 number.
I called the number, they took my info down, and said the area sales rep will reach out to me.
Little ol' nerd me who just wants to play his N64 across 4 big ass crt televisions couldn't possibly be deserving, right?
THEY ACTUALLY CALLED BACK!!!
Extron was able to find the adapter and cable that match the QSS 404, which is obsolete, and they sold it to me!
Oooohhhh!!!!! I'm so excited! The adapter and cable cost about 65% of what the unit cost me, but hey, a childhood dream is about to cone true (on a small scale), so I'm all about it!
Oh man I can't wait!
+++ for Extron! Hip hip hooray!!!
With that, I went and bought a 7$ vga extron distribution amp from ebay as well....fuck it, right?
Omg ship it NOW!!!
Thank you.
Picked up this 31 inch big boy yesterday.
At first it didn't power on, but i got it.
There is some strange bleed at the bottom left and right corner that changes slightly if I move the unit around
Despite that, the picture seems pretty nice!
Hehe, Mr. Omar was playing this copy of Mischief Makers at 27yo. Naturally, I had to start my save file...lol
...another nerd's treasure!
My wife was throwing out some empty Gameboy advances boxes and manuals, so I listed on FB Marketplace to trade it for N64 stuff.
These are the 5 games the nice gentlemen traded me for the GBA boxes.
So happy to have Mischief Makers now! Yeehaw!!!
Just picked up a few units and this one stood out.
It smells like my grandmother: stale Carlton Menthol 100's Soft Pack. She had a similar unit, maybe a zenith and slightly larger by an inch or two.
Man, the memories this smell brings back...I've never ever even tried a cigarette, but this scent is so cozy to me.
DANG! The wood grain is probably, idk...if i had to grade it...like an 8.5...no scrapes anywhere; just some tape residue here and there.
I tried turning it on, but it just clicks a bunch. The top left knob doesn't seem to do anything and the clicking starts after turning the right knob.
Idk. Ill look more into it later, but it was such a neat unit (and memorable to me) that I wanted to share.
**??**this thing has rgb? Lmao. Can't be, right? These gotta be adjustment dials or something, not plug-ins, right???
This makes my 5th grade self so happy.
Found a Radioshack Distribution Amplifier 15-1172 on FB for $5.
It works!
I'm wondering though; couldn't you just daisy chain from unit to unit for the same effect?
PS: cranking all 4 of these tvs volume up with some Revolt menu tunes is awesome. These WOW speakers in the Sony are killer. I surprised how well they bump.
Next is to create a matrix.
