Designing for Players Who Read Every Stat, and Those Who Read None of Them

Hey everyone! Survivor-likes might look simple, but behind every perk, stat, weapon, and build is a ridiculous number of design decisions.

We’ve written about how Orcthal keeps choices easy to understand while still giving minmaxers plenty to explore. If you’re curious about game design, scaling, tags, and balancing depth with accessibility, check out our take on it.

Warcamp: a way to spice up your games

Hi guys. I've been working on Warcamp: a free tool for running wargaming campaigns. The idea is quite simple: upload a map, draw territories and let people submit their battle results. You can also use this solo - built your own map, and whenever you play, submit the score (and ask your opponent to do the same, from your account).

You can create both private and public campaigns, invite people through links or QR codes, and specify campaign rules to suit your needs. You can create factions, alliances, create connections between regions and there's a whole host of other features to make it as robust as possible.

How does it work in practice?

In the below example, we have four factions to which the players can be assigned. Gondor, Rohan, Mordor and Isengard. Each of these has already assigned territories with points at campaign start. For example, Rohan holds Ford of Isen at +20 points.

When a Rohan player and an Isengard player fight a battle, they submit their scores to specific territories. For example, Isengard player having a big win, assigns 6 points to the territory for Isengard. Rohan player lost, so he gets 1 point and assigns it to the same territory. Fords of Isen is now at +15 Rohan (less than it started with). Should it be conqured in the next few battles, the territory will flip to Isengard, and assigning points to Helm's Deep is now possible.

This is of course just one example. You can set the starting points to whatever you like. You can have people submit scores themselves, or you can do it for them (they'd report it). You can ask for validation through a photograph with a generated code, you can also set manual approval (score will only actually have an effect when the moderator approves it from a waiting list).

There's also a log and history of battles fought and who submitted the scores.

I'd love for you to check it out and see if it can be useful for the community. It's a fun additional game for tournament organisers too, especially for small, thematic events. I'd love any feedback!
