My attempt at a warm color setup

Original post when I first built this: https://www.reddit.com/r/IndianGaming/comments/1qkf38k/built_my_second_pc_as_a_20_year_old_freelancer/

I moved my PC to my apartment ( 160kms away from my home ) cause of college. I daily drive linux so I dualbooted KDE neon + Windows 11.

Specs:

  • Processor: 9950X
  • RAM: 64GB 5200MHz DDR5
  • GPU: 5070
  • SSD: 1TB NVME
  • HDD: 4TB WD Red NAS Drive
  • MOBO: MSI X870E Edge Ti
  • Monitor: BenQ EW270Q 27" QHD IPS Monitor ( 144Hz - 1440p )

Desk:

  • Porsche 911 Carrera S Diecast Model ( got from Hamleys )
  • Porsche 911 Turbo Hotwheels
  • Kreo Hive 75
  • My old ANT Esports Mouse ( just replaced recently it with Logitech MX Master 3S )
  • Lamp from Amazon.

I made several upgrades from the initial spec, which are the HDD, extra 32GB of RAM, white mobo. The upgrade cost me around 50k a few months ago but due to the RAM crisis, it would cost anywhere between 65-75k. I ordered these via Computech.

The combined value comes upto ~3.3L. I know, crazy for a 5070 setup, but my work requires Processor and RAM more, perhaps the mobo was overkill.

Disk Allocation (TMI but cool):

Part |Mount
SSD - 600GB |Windows( C: )
SSD - 150GB |Linux (/)
SSD - 200GB |Linux (/home/)
HDD - 1.9TB |Windows ( Work )
HDD - 1TB |Windows ( Backups )
HDD - 800GB |Linux ( ext4 workdir mounted on a dir in ~ ) I work with AE, PR and other disk heavy tools, along with games so I just gave windows more disk space because its just a matter of mounting partitions as directories if I want more space in linux.

[WTB] Looking for macbook air ( M2 or new )

Want to buy a macbook M2 or newer preferably with 16GB RAM. Storage doesn’t matter much for me since this is going to be secondary.

Budget is around 50-60k. I know the prices have gone up a bit, I just want someone to be honest and not upsell a used device but rather evaluate it fairly and make a price.

Location: Chennai

Made NothingOS Widgets for linux ( KDE )

Published this project at the start of this year, I didn't share here because I didn't think there'd be a lot of linux users here, but a commenter suggested I post here as well.

Completely ported all the useful widgets with customization and interactivity. It's a 1:1 re-creation of the Nothing OS widgets with extra configuration you can tweak. I tested it through all the interactive scenarios ( music widget, weather ) with auto layout shifts depending on the aspect ratio.

Not even the blinking of the clock is missed ;)

There are 10 widgets in total:

Variant - can be switched in Configure
Layout - automatically changes according to aspect ratio
Pages - can be scrolled, swiped with mouse or touch abbr [ P1 ], [P2]..

  • Battery: Yes, its functional. It can show bluetooth device battery ( requires setup )
  • Analog Clock:
    • Variant - Swiss Rail
    • Variant - Modern Variant
  • Digital Clock:
    • Layout - Pill (2x1)
    • Layout - Square (2x2)
  • Digital Clock Large:
    • Dot Huge
    • Dot Matrix (ndot)
    • Dot Matrix Spaced (ndot-55)
    • Segmented
    • Segemented Sharp
  • World Clock:
    • Page 1: Timezone time
    • Page 2: Day in timezone, hour difference from system time
  • Date: Shows the date, you can play with the page fold :P
  • Media:
    • Page 1: Album Art, Media Controls
    • Page 2: Track Info, Application Info
  • Weather:
    • Layout (2x2)
      • Page 1: Weather summary
      • Page 2: High and Low temps
    • Layout (4x2)
      • Page 1: Weather summary, high low, and weekly forecast
      • Page 2: Weather summary, high low and hourly forecast
  • Circular Weather:
    • Variant - Grid: Weather summary, high low, temp
    • Variant - Multi Page
      • Page 1: Icon
      • Page 2: Temperature
      • Page 3: High low
  • Photo
    • Options: Pill, Border Margin, Grayscale

For detailed images of each widget and its states, check the repository.

Hope y'all like it. I pushed everything to my github repository and you'll be able to see this on the KDE store by tomorrow.

Approached for intern position, got a 36LPA job instead in a US based startup from a Tier 3, 0YOE.

Spoiler: I'm the same guy who worked as a sub contractor earlier,
College attendance thread ( btechtards )

How I got here ( journey story post ).

I ended up using it as supporting document and paid fine so I wasn't debarred ( 65% attendance ).

Tl;dr: Approached a CEO, he liked my projects, I asked if they do internship because their company sounded cool. Met the CEO on call, he liked me, met the engineering head, he LOVED me, and he himself vouched for me to the CEO and the CEO just asked me to schedule a meet so he could let me know.

Background: I'm a 3rd year student from a Tier 3 college, 0YOE, 0 internships, 0 course. I took the tier 3 college because we couldn't afford to pay fees and only this college had scholarship for my marks.

For context, read my earlier post about the contract. After my initial contract of $80k ( ~75L ) this year, I didn't do a lot of work but I tried to lock in. I was trying to get some leads for a while and I found that a person starred my project on Github and I just did a little bit of research on who they were and they were to be a CEO of a startup in the US.

I messaged them like "I know this is random, I'm the developer of this project... thanks for appreciating the work... [asking for intern position so I could learn from a team]" because I never worked in a formal setting and just wanted to shoot my shot.

He replied to me that all the paid intern positions were closed but just suggested me to mail him so he could connect and help me network, and I said yes.

It was during my end-sem and I was on a meet while me and my friends were shifting my apartment. We talked for a bit and he just asked me to explain what I do, and why I'm looking for internship. He was curious whether I was doing it for academic credits or the stipend. I told him, while I'd like a little side hustle, I wanted to be part of a team and learn more. I talked to him about my projects, the open source teams I was a part of and what I specialized in ( Android ). He was impressed by how I explained certain things and my github profile and other private contributions I mentioned.

He looped his Engineering Head and gave him context. While fixing the date for the meet, we went back and forth while choosing the time because my niece's birthday and my girlfriend's birthday (LDR) were on the only two dates he was free. I politely explained him the situation and he was cool about it. I was surprised because I suggested we post pone it twice so I wasn't sure if he'd even attend.

Coming back to the day it was scheduled, I got home after 16 hours of traveling and attended the meeting with droidcam because God knows what happened to my mic. We had a nice conversation about linux ( he uses arch btw ), and I talked about what I've built, why, and how I got into programming and open source, and he wanted to know about how I'm doing college as well.

I asked him a lot of questions, including but not just these:

- "What's one project you're proud of"
- "Are you against AI usage, and do you manually code if no"

Funny thing is that he thought for a long time about the first question and called it an interesting question. He then agreed that it was the projects he did for non profits in the US and this particular one he made a website for was the same one I worked as a volunteer to distribute in India ( christmas santa ). So, it was a nice moment for us to think that we worked as volunteers for the same thing XD.

One thing in particular surprised me is that he said "I like my interviews informal, when I let the interviewee talk, and not even make it feel like its one". So I asked him "Do you think a leet code interview would evaluate a developer more fit because I can build a product but not solve a lot of them because I feel that I never had the necessity to memorize or build things from scratch when in reality it would not be the scenario", he agreed and said "likewise".

Also, one of our points was about differentiating vibe coding vs how engineers use AI. We had a similar workflow and I openly admitted that I cannot code without AI now ( despite building apps since 2018 ) but I don't distribute slop. We had similar views about it and it clicked. Don’t get me wrong, I can solve leet code problems and code without AI, but the reality is different, just like what linus agreed with. AI is a powerful tool, the developer has to utilize it properly and take responsibility for it. I have experience in my tech since i was a teen so, no, AI was not a substitute for learning.

Note: Also, I'm not saying leet code doesn't help, but it depends on what and where you use it ( i love leet code SQL ), and helps you solve problems but if you've been a dev, it doesn't make a significant difference.

I told him my workflow with claude and we shared a few jokes here and there about it, talked about local models, different AI models and I explained him a few things about android and he was a good listener.

We stretched a 30 minute meeting into a 2:30 hour one and I was confident by the end of it that I made a good first impression.

Fast forward to two days later, the CEO asked to schedule a meet and I allocated the same day just to not delay their conclusion. He said "[The engineering head] liked you very much and he wants to work with you, how about you join our team as a developer".

I literally stuttered lol.

He said "He told me that you were very curious and a talented engineer, and I take it very seriously because we've both been in field for 30 years and he's the best programmer I know". I signed my agreement that week.

One last important thing he (The CEO) mentioned, "I like how you threw caution into the wind and went for it, not caring about anything else. It's crazy you sent a message and got a job" lol

Today, I'm talking to the engineering head because he just got back from his vacation. I think he'd be happy to know that his opinion was considered and I got hired.

Shoot your shot people, it can work.

My advice for fellow students/developers would be to focus on developing BOTH your technical and communication skills. Work in real projects, learn about tech in general so you have an idea about everything.

Leetcode is good, but along with it learn about software architecture, networking, debugging, testing and concepts you use in actual software engineering. Don't hyper-focus on programming languages. I can learn and adapt to a programming language in a week because I have the foundation of the concepts really well, learning the syntax just takes a few days.

Cheers!

[OC] Liquid Glass (macos) widgets for KDE

I posted teaser a few months ago on the WIP of liquid glass in kde plasma. It was the catalyst for developing a proper set of macos widgets for KDE. I researched into it, properly studied the colors, layouts and animations of the widgets and ported them for KDE.

These widgets support both glass and solid mode. Glass mode gives you full control over the parameters so you can make it look pre glass widgets as well ( blur without refraction ).

This is my second widget set, and my first one was nothing kde and I absolutely loved seeing it in builds that you guys post. I hope everyone likes these, and be sure to link the repo or mention me somewhere in the post if you ever post your rice 😄
