This content creator has such a great compilation of songs that tell our favorite story.

I wanted to share this one in particular because it has the Brutal Love lyrics and if you’re anything like me you’re singing right a long.

Please share your favorite creators.

No matter how many times I watched S3:Ep6, these cultural references have been nagging me. I could infer from the context, what they connote, but not the larger meanings that they draw into the story.  I finally decided to dig in.  

Here's what I have so far. Please clarify, correct, or share your interpretations. Bolded are sources of my intrigue and/or confusion. Do you think they hold deeper meaning or add any subtext to the story? 

Louis: You gon’ get on that mic tomorrow and say, “We are the Vampire Clarence Oddbody. Let’s make more”?

I keep thinking back to IWTV S1Ep3 when Tom Anderson says,

"It’s these damn teetotalin’ types*, too. As if we’re supposed to turn New Orleans into** Topeka*! Or God help us, Salt Lake City!"*

And then I discovered Thomas Anderson (1858–1931) was a real state legislator, and the unofficial "mayor" of Storyville for his part in establishing the 18-block legal prostitution and vice district in 1897 and operated saloons like the infamous Tom Anderson's Annex at the corner of Basin and Iberville Streets.

I saw that Cádiz is a significant setting in The Vampire Diaries. Also ancient mythology says Hercules founded the region and there are hidden cities under the sea.

The River Styx is a mythical boundary river in Greek mythology that separated the world of the living from the underworld.  It forms the main barrier to Hades, wrapping around the underworld multiple times. Souls have to be ferried across by Charon, requiring a small coin placed in the mouth of the deceased. I want to note that the symbolism of communion with the dead happens twice in the story, honoring both European and African folk mythologies that inform the black cultural traditions.

I wanted to note the respectful way they depicted Black folk tradition in-show. Papa Legba is the sacred gatekeeper of the spirit world and the guardian of the crossroads in African diasporic religions like Haitian Vodou and Louisiana Voodoo.  

Sorry in advance if this post connects too much with the show. I'd like to get your insights on wanting to read QotD, book 3, as my first book of the series. Having been introduced to the immortal universe through AMC S1-3, I am keen to jump right into the action. I feel like I have a basic orientation from the show of the key characters and relationships— what everyone says is the reason why you must read IWTV and TVL first. Would this basic insight from the show be enough to start reading QotD?

The reasons I want to start with QotD. Firstly, it's hard to imagine S4 is like 2 years away!

Also, I want to see the team working together for once and I'm not quick to revisit all the catfights and drama between the characters, already shown on screen. Here is what I gleaned from an internet deep dive that got me so excited to jump headfirst into QotD:

• Story revolves around action and conflict at a global scale

​Puts relationships to the test:

• Armand less straightforward villain than in-show: During the conflict with Akasha, Armand is fiercely protective of and loyal to Lestat, despite their complicated history. While the vampires are united against Akasha, Armand’s specific behavior during this crisis is heavily driven by his deep, obsessive love for Lestat. He prioritizes Lestat's safety above almost everything else. Armand is one of the first to step forward to comfort, defend, and emotionally ground Lestat, helping him break free from Akasha's psychological grip. The moment Lestat is in danger from Akasha, Armand completely drops his old grudges to act as a reliable ally and protector. Instead of trying to control Lestat or exploit his weakness, Armand stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Louis and Marius to ensure Lestat survives the final confrontation.

Especially these two, that S1-S3 left mostly offscreen:

• Devil's Minion: Armand buys and builds Night Island as a massive, hyper-secure sanctuary purely to keep Daniel safe from the world. Armand's immediate reflex is to lock Daniel away where Akasha cannot look at him or find him. A newly turned, traumatized Daniel is left behind in a fortified mansion while his maker leaves for a dangerous vampire summit. Daniel doesn't feel "protected"; he feels isolated, abandoned, and trapped by a controlling master.

 

Female driven storylines. Yass!

• Maharet: maternal protector and historian of the vampire species. Mekare: when Akasha refuses to back down, Mekare acts as the physical force needed. Pandora: voice of reason, articulate critic, using logic to dismantle Akasha's plan. She leads by example despite the lethal risks involved. Jesse Reeves - modern, human-centric leadership. By investigating the paranormal for the Talamasca, she bridges the gap between the mortal world and the vampire underground.

We jump directly into an established Loustat relationship:

• "Louis, the watcher, the patient one, was there on account of love pure and simple. The two had found each other only last night, and theirs had been an extraordinary reunion. Louis would go where Lestat led him. Louis would perish if Lestat perished. But their fears and hopes for this night were heartbreakingly human."
• "Stupidly I stared at him. How perfect he seemed to me as he stood there waiting with such kindness and such patience. And then, like a fool, I came out with it. “Do you love me now?” I asked. He smiled; oh, it was excruciating to see his face soften and brighten simultaneously when he smiled. “Yes,” he said.

Do you think this is the right move, rn? If you could only read one book before S4 dropped, would this be it? Or is this terribly misguided and setting myself up for failure?

In my reasoning I’m considering my big age. I don’t know if I could deal with all that passion and jumping up and down that Lestat be doing. Louis is just too melancholic, I’m downtrodden enough, with my own existential crises and need someone putting in that energy too.

No judgement please. Hear me out. If Armand could wipe out some things I’d rather forget. And make sure I get my four squares a day, help out with housekeeping— talking about how serving me is like serving a living god. 💅🏽chile. I might have to go on ahead and be with Armand.

Ok thoughts...

The influencer argues that TVL downplayed queer sexuality, especially in contrast to IWTV.

This video prompted me to reflect, as I hadn't thought of it while watching.

Her reasoning: quantifiably less overt queer sexuality on screen this season. more hetero sex scenes depicted, particularly centering Gabriela. the lighting of the scenes showing the romance between Lestat and Nicholas dimmed in contrast to other intimate scenes.

I personally had thought it was a wise choice to show Lestat exploring his friendship with Louis, especially with Lestat dealing with his traumatic experiences of being objectified: by his mother, Magnus, even Larry. And coming to terms with himself as valuable and worthy of love, beyond being a body.

However, the video -- and comments discussing below -- beg the question, was queer sex downplayed in S3 and was it due to the political climate or an attempt to expand the fandom?

What do you guys think about the creative decision? Or do you think it's much ado about nothing?
