I used to work at USCIS and I’m an immigration attorney. This is the advice I give to clients about social media.

I keep getting this question from clients, so figured I'd share what I actually know, both from practicing now and from my time on the inside.

The short answer: probably not as much as you think, unless something flags you.

USCIS does not have ICE's budget or ICE's staffing. Manually combing through every applicant's full social media history is not realistic at current resource levels. My educated guess (and it is a guess, not confirmed policy) is that even where initial sweeps or automated screening happen, a deep manual dive is reserved for cases where something already raised a flag. For what it's worth, none of my current clients have been asked about their social media yet.

That said, disclosure requirements have expanded a lot over the past year. If you're in a category required to list your accounts, that information is on the record and can be checked. "They're not reading everything" isn't the same as "it doesn't matter what's on there."

Advice I give clients:
-If your account is private, keep it private. If it's public, keep it public. Don't change your settings right now. A sudden shift can itself read as an attempt to manage what an officer sees.
-Don't delete old posts. Same logic: it can look like you're covering something up, which is often worse than the post itself.
-If an officer asks you about something on your social media, answer honestly. In my experience, officers respond far better to someone who owns something than someone who's clearly trying to spin it.

Officers are human. When I was adjudicating, I saw plenty of things in background checks that raised an eyebrow. Unless it pointed to an actual security concern or undermined the merits of the case, I usually didn't even bring it up. Most officers aren't looking to nitpick your Twitter history. They're trying to determine whether you're eligible and whether you're a security risk.

Bottom line: don't give them a reason to flag you. Don't hide, don't scrub, don't panic-change your privacy settings. If asked, be honest and move on.

Happy to answer questions. I have a few windows today it hop on.

I’m an attorney but this is not legal advice.

how is everyone coping?

i’ve been feeling so depressed since the ban. i wake up every morning and i have nothing to do during the day which makes me feel even worse. i also live in a town that isn’t really walkable-and i don’t have a car of my own either- so going out requires money that i don’t have. i’ve been hoping every day for this nightmare to end but it seems like at this point the only thing in my control is my mind. how are people coping? especially when you don’t really have friends or family around? or am i the only one struggling to this extent 🤧

I-485 Approved! 🇺🇸 (EB-1A | Nigeria | One of the 39-country hold cases)

I wanted to share our timeline in hopes that it encourages someone who's still waiting. Reading success stories on Reddit gave me a lot of hope during the long wait, so I'm paying it forward.

Our entire family (myself, my wife, and our two sons) had our I-485 applications approved on July 3, 2026.

Timeline
Category: Employment-Based (EB-1A)
Country of Birth: Nigeria
I-485 Filed: July 22, 2025
EAD Approved: October 2025
Medical RFE: Polio/IPV-related - November 2025
RFE Response Received by USCIS: January 12, 2026
FO: Chicago (Moved from CA)

Shortly after responding to the RFE, our cases went completely silent. As many of you know, Nigeria was among the countries affected by the USCIS adjudication hold earlier this year, so there was a long period with no movement.

Then things suddenly picked up after Dorcas.

Silent Updates
June 16 – First silent update after months of inactivity
June 25 – Silent update
June 30 – Silent update
July 2 – Silent update
July 3 – Case Approved

All four I-485 applications were approved together.
The waiting was honestly the hardest part. There were days I questioned whether anything was happening at all. Seeing other people's approval posts kept me hopeful, so I hope this timeline does the same for someone else.

If your case has been quiet for months or years, don't lose hope. Sometimes things happen behind the scenes before you ever see a public status change.
Wishing everyone who's still waiting a smooth approval soon. Your turn will come. 🙏🇺🇸

Feel free to ask me any question if in similar situation.

Writ of Mandamus against USICS

Does anyone know how long it takes after filing a writ of mandamus against the USCIS for delaying my immigration cases (I 612, I 765)? I’m currently unemployed due to delay in issuing my EAD

APPROVED 🟢 | OPT EAD | Premium Processing | Potomac SC

Finally posting my timeline as promised. One of the 39 banned countries. Here we go:

Type: Initial Post-Completion OPT
Premium Processing: YES
Date Applied: 04/03/2026
PP Added: 05/20/2026
Biometrics Requested: YES | 04/10/2026
Biometrics Completed: 04/30/2026
RFIE: NO
NOID: NO
Date Approved: 07/02/2026 (Business Day 29)
Card Produced: TBD
Card Received: TBD
Country: Nigeria
Service Center: Potomac Service Center

I believe that the case was frozen under PM-602-0194 (39-country hold) from May until June 12, when USCIS confirmed compliance with the Dorcas vacatur. My backend API showed a silent touch on June 13 (hold removal) and again on July 2 at 11:12 AM; the approval email arrived at 12:22 PM the same day.

For those still waiting from banned countries, cases are moving post-Dorcas. Watch your API, monitor the July 8 stay hearing on CourtListener (Case No. 1:26-cv-00132), and push hard before any stay lands.

It is well. 🙏

How long does it take to receive a replacement Green Card after filing Form I-90?

My friend’s 10-year Green Card expired, so they filed Form I-90 to renew/replace it. For those who have gone through this recently, how long did it take for you to receive the new Green Card?
Also, how long did it take to get the receipt notice and extension letter after filing?

Paid for Premium Processing, Got Regular Processing Instead?

It seems that many Premium Processing cases filed between December 2025 and April 2026 are now being treated as if they were regular processing cases.

When people call USCIS about their PP cases, they're often told there is no timeline and no estimate for when a decision will be made. If that's the case, what was the point of paying for Premium Processing?

At this stage, it feels like affected applicants may end up waiting until the normal processing time has passed and then consider filing a mandamus lawsuit if the hold is still not lifted.

The situation gives the impression that USCIS is trying to delay these cases as much as possible, while showing little concern for the uncertainty and stress imposed on applicants and their families.

Has anyone with a PP case from this period received a decision recently?

Does I-485 go to supervisor before or after ban lifts?

If you have an interview during the processing ban, does the I-485 go to the supervisor's desk with the I-130 before the ban gets lifted? Or does the I-485 only get sent to the supervisor after the ban is officially over?

Venezuelan I-485 Approved (Congressional Inquiry Timeline)

Marriage-based AOS (USC)
I-485 filed: October 17, 2025
Interview: January 7, 2026
At the interview, the officer told me my case could not be approved because it had been placed on hold due to the USCIS policy affecting applicants from certain designated countries.
My online status remained stuck after the interview for months.
I contacted my congressional representative like 2 weeks ago, who submitted a congressional inquiry with USCIS on my behalf.
Now I’m waiting for Card Is Being Produced and the physical green card.
Hopefully this helps anyone else whose case was held because of these policies. Feel free to ask any questions if you’re in a similar situation.
