ElectriQ Easy-Fit DIY AC Installation

Luckily I ordered this before the last heatwave, so it arrived on Friday. Around 6-8 hours total for myself to install it. I have zero experience with AC, but am competent in DIY and basic electrics etc..
This is an electriq 18,000 BTU unit. Since this specific unit is ‘easy-fit’ it is pregassed with r290 (propane) and therefore does not require a F-gas installer.
Overall installation was not too difficult, the hardest part was getting the lines through the wall. I was mainly worried about kinks and bending coppers too much as the large copper pipe is especially hard to bend and I felt like they could also easily break. Also I wanted it to look neat so bundled all the excess cable and pipes behind the unit, which made it much more fiddly to connect the lines, but probably worth it as everything looks clean and hidden out of view.
I also purchased an SDS hammer drill and a 65mm core drill bit, total cost was £730 for the AC unit, £20 for the wall bracket and around £150 for tools, electrical parts, cables etc. So £900 fully installed. 24 hours post install and it is working fantastically, the outdoor unit is not loud, I can’t hear it unless standing within 10m.
The electric connection is via an outdoor 13a switched fuse spur with UV resistant outdoor 2.5mm twin and earth cable, spurred off the living room ring circuit. I also installed an outdoor double socket for convenience. The unit pulls max 1.3kw so am not worried about overloading the circuit.

I had contacted several installers and only 1 bothered to do a survey and quoted £4.5k for a single unit like this.
Generic online installers come to around £2.5k installed, so I am very happy to have saved a load of cash to treat the kids instead. It’s also nice to be able to live normally without having to sit in front of the fan all day. Today was 32c outside and 23c in the living room with all doors open so the cooler air is also spreading round the house. Normally it would be around 28-30c on a day like today. For running costs, it will be free for us, we have solar panels and home battery storage.
In the south of england especially, it feels that AC in 2026 is not a luxury but more of a necessity.

Feel free to ask me questions as I know many people have been looking at DIY air con installs.

Prevent Vandalism on Window AC Condenser Fins?

Where I live, almost every single first-floor window unit I've ever seen has had a word/drawing made of bent fins on its condenser coils because they're outside and outside means anything goes. When I moved into a first-floor apartment with a window unit, the unit was already slightly vandalized, but not really enough to affect performance so I didn't do anything about it.

Today, after three 100+ degree (F) days in a row, I decided the AC performance was kind of lacking so I went outside to check the fins and drainage. I found that sometime in the last three days, someone has written and circled a racial slur on the same unit by bending the condenser fins.

I'm going to buy a fin comb to fix the existing damage, but I'm wondering if there's anything preventative I can do to make sure this doesn't happen again. I've seen some people say to use a wire mesh or poultry netting, but my concern is that someone will just go "look at these idiots trying to stop me" and stick their fingers through the 1-inch gaps in the wire to damage the fins again. Are there any other options for me here? My budget is ~$30 and I'm a little handy so I can DIY whatever.

How much cheaper is it to run an inverter portable AC compared to a standard AC?

I have a portable 9K BTU AC and with my energy provider, Fuse energy, on a fixed rate of 0.24p KWH and daily standing charge of 0.45p it costs me around 30p p/hr to run.

Can anyone who is on a similar energy rate tell me how much their inverter portables, 12-14k BTU, are costing them per hour to run?

I'm trying to work out whether it's worth me trying to get a larger BTU and inverter model.

Please no comments about dual hoses, I'm very aware they're more efficient due to fixing negative air pressure problems but they're not an option for people living in the UK. They're not available for purchase and converting to them could void the warranty and make them a fire hazard if not done correctly.

Also I'm very aware of the Midea Portasplit but at £1000 for the 12k option, which I would need, it's not in my price range, and it wouldn't be able to be installed in my bedroom due being in a 4th floor flat with incompatible windows.

I'm ONLY interested in finding out realistic cost per hour difference with PORTABLE single hose inverter units. Not any other units.

UPDATE: Good god, why is it so hard to get people to just answer a simple query. I've done the research. I KNOW that a dual hose or split unit would be more efficient but they are NOT options for me. Either due to the availability, significant cost, or type of window/property that I have or am in. Why do people not understand this?! Just because these options are the best options, it doesn't mean that they're options for everyone, so please for the love of god stop pushing them on those of us sweltering from the heat in the UK. We cannot obtain dual hose units from any trusted retailers over here, neither in nor out of season, and a lot of us have outward opening windows, some too small to fit the compressor of split units through, or our leaseholds or landlords don't allow us to have these, or any other more efficient options installed. It's NOT that we're being too picky or too tight with our money. It's the restrictions that a lot of us in the UK have been lumped with, and we're all just trying to find the best options for us with these restrictions. I get it, me myself am VERY restricted, but this apartment was all I could afford and obtain in the UK because of high rents and landlords only wanting to rent to couples on high incomes. So cut me some slack!

All I want to know is:

People, ideally in the UK, who have PORTABLE INVERTER units, what are your hourly running costs? Not daily, HOURLY. So I can work out if it is worthwhile me getting one.

That's it. I'm not asking for any other advice. Just the running costs of portable inverter AC units.

Repair advice needed

Hi my Comfee 9000btu unit sounded weird when the compressor started and smelled a bit( might be because it is new). Depending on where I pressed on the housing the sound disappeared. So I knew that something touched that isn't supposed to touch. I opened the unit and found a melted plastic. The sound also seems to come from that region. Should I replace it or just rearrange it?

5 star 1.5 Ton inverter Window AC

Can anyone suggest a good window AC?

Looking for a 1.5 ton 5 star inverter window AC (installing split has many challenges for the particular room)

Have checked a few- Lg one looks cool but I have LG split in one room and that sucks.
I’m thinking of Panasonic as My panasonic split is just awesome.

But on paper both (window ones) look almost similar with added wifi in LG one!

Dual hose setup

Bought a used old Delonghi and made a dual hose conversation.

The next heat wave is coming soon in Germany. I’m not afraid anymore.

Next winter I’ll buy a Midea PS for sure.

"Ventless" portable AC at Menards - Lies right on the box!

https://www.menards.com/main/heating-cooling/air-conditioners-accessories/zurich-5500-btu-115-volt-ventless-portable-air-conditioner/pa1005a-ul/p-4348828407018790-c-1497103338431.htm

Copy from their website:

>"NO More complicated set up Traditional portable air conditioners require bulky vent hoses and window kits, making installation a time-consuming chore. Our vent hose-free design eliminates this headache entirely. Simply plug it in, turn it on, and enjoy instant cooling no tools, no fuss, no mess."

It's disgusting that they make such blatantly false claims without being fined or sued ... if you dig a little deeper, you'll find out what the actual "technology" is on the Zurich website:

>"How it works

>A traditionalAC, Heat builds up on the condenser, and a fan blows the heat off the condenser out the hose. Our PATENTED technology, we pump water on the condenser eliminating the heat and never letting it get Hot, so room temperature air is blown out the back!

>NO HOSE- NO WINDOW-NO INSTALLATION-JUST COOL AIR RIGHT WHERE YOU WANT!"

Great. So it's a space heater that also humidifies. Exactly what you'd want in the room with you on a hot day. </s> Menards should be ashamed for selling this.

Any reason to not use one of these to help cool down a single room?

Basically the title. We have a two story house and our upstairs master bedroom is always at least 5/6 degrees warmer than the main level in the summer, especially during these heat waves. It’s not really an issue during the day but we have to keep the main level at 70 for the bedroom to get below 76. It gets hard to sleep sometimes even with fans, and I hate wasting all the energy/money to keep the main level at 70 just to have a shot at not sweating through our sheets lol We’ve tried closing a few vents on the main level at night and it helps maybe a degree or two. This seems like a relatively cheap fix to at least get some more a/c into the room, we would probably only be using it at night as we’re not really up there much during the day. Anyone have luck/no luck with these? I don’t usually trust amazon reviews.

Air Conditioning having issues the co. We use seems to be lost on what it is

My central air is just a yr. Old everything ran fine last summer now this summer the air hasn't been able to keep up it gets warm and makes a vacuum noise the copper pipe leading into the unit freezes up and the ac guy found this yellow sludge on the inside of our unit says he's never seen it before. I am gonna place the pictures up. Does anyone have any idea what it might be happening?

Best air return method for hot room

Half of my house faces the north with barely any foliage or tree cover to deflect the sun after about 1pm. I have a hobby room that gets very warm from like a computer and 3D printer. The AC can be set to 72F but once the 93-100F afternoon temps hit, the AC maintains about 75F till the sun hits the tree tops. I have single pane windows in all the rooms of the house. The AC was full replaced around 2-3 years ago and attic reinsulated..

My question is how can I cool that room down more in the afternoons? Can I put a fan in the corner and have it blow air towards the door so that the return picks it up?

I'm looking for ideas without the need of adding another AC.

Picture shows hobby room circled with an arrow to the return. Compass on entry door floor to show how the house sits with the afternoon sun.

Update to previous post…I did it!

A few days ago I came here seeking advice about how to make my portable AC work with the old windows in my apartment.

I ended up combining everyone’s feedback. I converted the unit to dual hose, created an insulated screen to seal the whole window, and raised the unit to straighten the hoses.

It immediately increased efficiency and the unit was running significantly quieter….with warmer air. Lo and behold, when I went outside to make sure there weren’t issues with the hoses, I discovered that there were glass storm window screens on every window. Raised the glass and now, with a couple of strategically placed fans, the entire apartment is a cool and comfy 76 degrees! Thank you everyone!

Air conditioning motor... inside the apartment?

Dear redditor DIYers,

I've had an idea, and before I share it with the world, I wanted to quietly discuss it among ourselves to check if it's a really stupid one.

In the center of out apartment (apartment block, upper floor), we have created a windowless utility room, where we keep everything loud/annoying (hot water tank, washing machine, dryer, tool storage etc. In one corner of it, there is a column, belonging to the building, which was previously used as a kitchen exhaust. The utility room was carved out of the original kitchen, and it's now separated from it by a plasterboard wall, stuffed with phono-absorbent material. The door to the utility is in the adjacent corridor.

Since the room is quite a bit hotter and the dryer + drying rack creates humidity, we are planning to install an exhaust pipe + extractor fan, venting into the corner column.

I am considering installing a permanent air conditioner, but putting the motor unit on the inside of the utility room and the ventilator unit in our day room/kitchen/living area on the other side of the wall. Would this setup work as I think it would (i.e, motor heat, mostly contained in the utility room, gets vented out through the extractor fan?). Or am I out of my mind for even considering it?

TLDR: Can I install the motor of an air conditioning unit on the inside of my apartment, given my unusual setup

Please note: While "why don't you put your heat exchanger outside the window like a normal person" is a perfectly valid question, the simple answer is that we can't. The building facade is historical, and we cannot install anything on it - not even a tv antenna...

GFI keeps tripping

I’m running a 12,000 btu air conditioner, it’s an older model and so is my house, my wife and I moved in a year ago and the air conditioner ran fine. This year it keeps tripping the GFI outlets wherever I use it. (Even when there’s no other loads on the circuits) should I try getting a smaller btu air conditioner or should I be replacing the GFI’s? T.Y.I.A. !!!

Aircon makes buzzing noise every 30 sec

Hiya,

The aircon makes a buzzing noise every 30 seconds or so. It still functions like it should, only the noise is driving me a bit insane. Does anyone know what the problem is (and if its a fire hazard)? Tyty

AC is pumping out hot air help??

I got this AC two years ago, it worked fine in the start but now in 100f weather it pumps out 90f air in my room, making it ridiculously hot. Shouldn't it be pumping cold air? Im not a handy person at all and have no clue how ACs work or if there's certain versions or anything. Especially since it was a decently priced one

I live in New England and im also wondering if there's a chance my home just isn't retaining the cold. Even with 3 ACs in and a two fans going. Others who live with me their ACs work fine and theyre older so im at a loss 😭😭 any ideas would be helpful

(Ignore how dirty it LOOKS I have two cats and a dog and dander and dust builds up quick. I promise I clean the filters and vents regularly, like once a week)

Why are air conditioners not very common in most of Europe during their heatwave?

I understand that it's mostly cold throughout the year but America gets very cold weather and has intense heat waves. Yet they still sell air conditioners a lot all over the country. Why do so many European countries have a lack of air conditioning for this heat wave??

So absolutely confused

1st time female homeowner and I am having attic issues and can not get 2 roofers, handymen, or AC guys to agree on what the heck is going on. First, I live on the coast of Texas where it gets hot. My attic is ridiculously hot, like nearly 140 degrees. I am not sure how the inspector missed so much, but he absolutely did. The day after I moved into the house one of my ACs quit working and when I went up into the attic, there is an alarm going off. I was so freaked out by it that I called the fire department. The fireman said it is an electrical issue but mentioned that I should be more concerned with lack of insulation and no air flow. The AC guy briefly fixed my ac and said it was out of Freon & I paid to have it filled back up. At some point a large water stained appeared on my ceiling. I called a roofer and he said it was not the roof and the AC guy probably dumped the water out of the pan. However, it seems this stain is getting bigger. I went into the attic (split) and found mold. I also found that a rat had chewed into the AC ducts. AC has gone out again. Called the AC guy back and he says I need a new outside unit due to a coil and I need ductwork. He also said that the pea trap for both AC combine and are somehow dumped into my guest bathroom sink. He told me that was a plumbing issue. It rains again & I called a different roofer. He said I need to rip out all of the vents on the side of my house and put new one AND install a gable vent for the rocking price of 15k. Third roofer says the soffit vents are fine, I need a ridge vent and attic fans & I need to rip out the insulation & put in something else for 6k. Called an insulation guy & he says I need foam/ liquid insulation & baffles. All I know for sure is the attic is so hot you can feel it in the hallway & my kids bedrooms, I have one non working AC, I have a spot on my ceiling that is getting bigger I feel like it may fall in & an alarm that none of these professionals seemed to know what it is and how to shut it off. Who fixes this stuff and in what order?
