Issue with AC/Condenser

Bought a house last December, and just started running the AC since the temperature is getting hotter outside. We realized that we weren’t getting any cool air through the house to the point the thermostat was showing the exact outside temperature.
Since we have 2 mo, immediately called around for a hvac tech to come out and fix it. Guy came in and found out we need a fan motor cause the fan was not running. We got it ordered and fixed the next day ($860) on top of the $275 dispatc and diagnostic fee we were charged.
During the install, guy was like hey bad news since we still not getting any cool air I check refrigerant level and you need more. We got more of that like 2lbs I believe for an extra $392.
Now woke up this morning the insulated line is frozen.

Im not really knowledgeable in the hvac field. Question is are these guys giving me the round around, are these fair prices to get these things fixed and what should I do?

My Mr.Cool split ac unit keeps freezing up? Any recommendations?

Hello, my Mr cool split ac unit keeps freezing up daily. The self clean usually fixes the issue and we can keep using it, but I have a feeling this shouldn’t happen daily. Any idea why this is happening?

LG vs Midea

I’m planning to buy air conditioning for my house - 2x 3.5 KW split systems. One unit will be installed in the attic for cooling and occasional heating during winter. The second unit will be used to cool the upper floor.

The installer recommended the Midea Breezeless Plus and Breezeless E models. However, I also asked for a quote for LG DUALCOOL AI Air Deluxe units. The price difference is significant, so I wanted to ask if anyone knows anything about Midea air conditioners. This is my first encounter with the brand - apart from knowing that Midea has this special vent on the front, it’s a Chinese product and one of the largest manufacturers, I don’t know much about them. Or should I throw some extra cash for LG. I don’t need fancy features, other than easy wireless / app setup and reliability.

Midea Duo - DIY dual hose and window panel

My swing out window is about 5 feet off the ground so I had the original Midea dual hose rising up and out the window. It was too short so I extended it with flexible hose. The problem is that when I roll down my roller blinds the hose is so fat that it interfered with the blinds. I took several months to design and build my own hose system and window panel. I'm pretty proud of what I did so I wanted to share some photos and the journey to get here.

I searched online for ideas and parts so I could build something that would work for me. I also wanted it to look nice since it is in my living room permanently all year since I have the Midea model that does cooling and heating. I couldn't find anything so I decided to make it from scratch.

I bought a 3D printer and learned how to design parts. The 3D printer can only print relatively small parts (less and 1 feet square) so it took many parts to complete this. I used PETG filament for the 3D printed parts since it can withstand the exhaust heat and UV light.

The dual hose:

- I made the hose to be as slim as possible (so my blinds can go over it, but the overall volume to match the original intake and exhaust hoses.

- The hardest part was making a piece to connect to the body of the air conditioner, then making a smooth transition backwards towards the window so that the blinds can roll down as far as possible. The design of the pieces weren't a perfect fit, so I made some extra fittings, lined them up and bonded them together. In the end, the hose fit the air conditioner body perfectly.

- I made the outside vents so the exhaust air vents upwards and the intake vent faces down, since I didn't want hot air to enter back in the intake vent. This wouldn't be good in the rain, but works for me because my vents are covered overhead by my swing out window and the whole window opens out to a covered balcony.

- I noticed the original Midea hose has a grid on the intake hose so I made a honeycomb grid for the intake and exhaust vents.

- I printed some mounting brackets so I can use the original screw holes to mount the hose to the body of the air conditioner. I epoxied the bracket onto the base of my hose but I ended up not putting the screws in since gravity was holding it on pretty well.

- I experimented on how to combine all these 3D printed parts. I think there was over 20 pieces. Most of the pieces took over 12 hours each to print. To glue them together, I tried superglue, epoxy putty, wood putty, liquid epoxy, and bondo. I found the best was liquid epoxy to hold the pieces together and bondo to fill the seams and other imperfections. Then lot of sanding, primer and spray paint.

The window panel:

- I'm on a upper floor of a high-rise condo, since my window opens to my balcony, I have access to working on the outside so I decided to make a dual panel for my window.

- I put one acrylic panel on the outside. I 3D printed a rectangle trim just large enough to fit the window opening, then screwed the outside panel to the trim. I put acrylic panel on the inside of the window and also screwed that to the 3D printed trim. So it's basically a sandwich of panels on the window casing.

- I cut an opening through both panels to match the shape of my hose. I 3D printed a trim piece to go between the two panels to mount the intake and exhaust vents as well as the main body of the hose.

All done:

- I finished about a week ago.

- I've only used it for a few hours, but so far it works great!

- My wife didn’t say anything when I installed it. She thinks that I bought it that way. I made it in my parents’ garage, a little every time I visited. She didn’t want me to buy a 3D printer so I didn’t say a word about it while I worked on it for many months.

- I'd love to hear what you think.

AC for room on second floor with no windows ?

So this is my room, and for some reason they have these weird windows that go from the floor up top, and don’t open. My house doesn’t have central AC, only heat, and it absolutely sucks to sleep especially with it getting 90 Fahrenheit where I live.

So i’m trying to get the cheapest option that works good, and I though of a mini split but that would run me 3-4k because of my house layout, and my breaker is on the opposite side of the house. Another option I considered is cut a hole in the wall, (note third and second pic), which would be much cheaper though not sure if it’s load bearing or not.

Now another option I could think of is somehow modify the window so I can run a portable ac heat duct out of it, thoughts? I’d like to sleep in my room without sweating my balls off, thanks guys

Ano tamang temperature ng aircon?

Hi, so we have 1.5hp na aircon. Usually 12-17hrs syang bukas. Okay lang ba na 27-28 lang sya nakaset per day? Di naman namin need na pang freezer na lamig. Inaalala ko lang baka sa sobrang baba ng temp mas malakas pa pala sya kumain ng kuryente?

Filling with water, temp solution?

I know the issue is that the water filling up is triggering the sensor that I'm holding in my hand and it's turning off the central air. I have maintenance able to come in a couple days but having to manually suck out water with a vacuum is my only solution at the moment. What can I do with this?

Are window units smart enough to avoid damaging themselves when overnight temps drop?

Have some new lg dual inverter smart units. We run ours at bedtime as it's hot but some nights have a big temp drop to the low 60s. I'm not awake to shut them off and open the windows, and they cycle on occasionally to maintain target temp. Am I asking for compressor damage? Thanks

What should I do here?

Hi. I live in a condo in NJ. I have through the wall AC units in my living room and bedroom. In the living room I have a one year old Frigidaire 12000 BTU unit. I bought it through the management office at my condo last May. They have a deal with PC Richards where they order a unit and install it for a discount price. It is just past the one year warranty period. It's been really hot in NJ the past few days, in the 90's . I have not been able to get the temperature below 77 in my living room and the air conditioner in my bedroom (a GE) only took a couple of hours to get the temperature down to 72. The air coming out is cooler than room temperature, but not cold. I called an appliance repair person and he looked at it and said it needed Freon. This really shouldn't happen with a one year old unit. He said it might be an issue with a pin sized leak. There are no other signs of a leak, like any strange odors. He said if he adds more Freon, for $260, it should be good for 2 or 3 years. I called Frigidaire and they said it is past the manufacturer warranty. I was hoping that they would do a one time "good faith" reimbursement, but apparently not. I don't want to throw good money after bad. Should I bite the bullet and spend $600 or more on a new unit, (A GE this time). I am worried about throwing money down the drain.

Need help with wiring for my Nest 3rd Gen Thermostat. Please help my city is going through a heat wave right now :(

This is the current wiring situation for the machine. The issue is the building runs on a two pipe system and is currently set to cooling but my duct will only blow out hot air.

The super came in to check whether it is a compressor issue but everything is working correctly. The strainer for the compressor is not clogged either.

I am unable to check if the electrician has incorrectly wired this because the wire colours don’t match the colours shown in the nest install guide

EDIT - this is a 4th Gen model.

What is this Loud Banging Noise??

This has been happening for about a week now around 10AM-2PM. I got on the roof and checked to see if any debris was falling onto the air conditioner and there is nothing outside. I assumed it was that because it would not do this at night ever. So confused

midea ac/room units defaulting to 86 degrees on power on?

ok so i had these 2 units for about a year now. a window unit and a room unit w/ the funnel...

last year they worked fine. not sure if it was an app update or firmware update.. but here's my issue.

i usually use the midea app to turn on the ac before i get home. it would back then default to last temp i had it set, now it sets it at 86 and go into eco mode... since i never had to slide the temp back down... messed around w/ settings and nothing i would assume would do that.

Apartment AC help!

I live in an apartment that has no built in AC, ideally I am looking for a dual hose setup for our living room as it's around 500~ sqft of space, however we cannot put the hose out the window as the windows open outwards and only a few inches. We have 5inch round holes in the wall where AC is supposed to go. I cannot use the patio door as we have cats.

Any advise on how to make this work? Or do I give up and get a single hose and pray it can handle the job?

Where does this rubber insulation piece go?

LG LW6017R
I opened the unit up to clean everything out today and this piece fell out of the back. Can someone please tell me where it goes? It looks like it goes around one of the copper tubes but I don't know...there's a matching one on a pipe in the front.

Thanks!

Mold or mildew? How do I clean this?

Please don’t mind the cat fur lol, my guy is super fluffy.

So it’s getting pretty hot where I am, and I want to turn on my AC (I’ve had it for three years). But there’s this stuff inside of it, and for my safety and the safety of my cat, I haven’t turned it on in fear that it could be black mold. My mom is pretty convinced it’s mildew and I’ll be fine, but I don’t know, I just want to be sure.

How would I go about cleaning this? Or is it a total loss? The gunk is all up in there, and I’m at the point where I’d rather get a new one, but don’t want to in the case that this is salvageable. It is usually on, at most, 8 months of the year because I get hot super easy. But because of the gunk in there, it’s only been on 4 months last summer and I haven’t turned it on since.

Do refrigerant(R32) need to be added for 20m lineset?

Hi

I am a homeowner and I got installed R32 mini split of 1.5 tonnes(18000BTU) capacity. There is 20m(65ft) of copper lineset between indoor evaporator and outdoor condenser units. Brochure for this particular air conditioner mentions that it is precharged with 880gms of R32 for up to 5m line set and it needs 15gms/m of R32 for every meter of line set added.

I used it first night and it is not cooling up to expectations.

So I am almost certain that the technician might not have added the extra R32 needed. How much will it affect cooling as it will be roughly 15% short of required R32? Can I use it for a few days until the R32 is topped up?

Am I correct and if yes then is it a simple case of R32 to be topped up by a technician?
