Where to stay suggestion Portland - Kennebunkport

Visiting Maine for the first time in July for 5 days with my wife and infant. Staying in downtown portland for 2 days and also looking to stay for 3 days between Portland and Kennebunkport. Would you all recommend staying 2 street off the Old Orchard Beach boardwalk or in the Wildes District area near Kennebunkport? I’m really unfamiliar with the area since I’ve never been but looking to stay somewhere that is safe and convenient.

Vetted list of fundraisers for firefighters injured at Searsmont fire?

Is there a vetted list of fundraisers ( Go Fund Me, others ) for firefighters who were hurt in the big fire?

It would be helpful to know which fundraiser operations are not scams, so our donations get used the way we intend them.

International Babymoon canceled; now doing one in Ogunquit!

Hello friends,

I’m pregnant and due to medical reasons, can no longer travel to the Algarve Coast of Portugal for our babymoon as planned. Instead, we will be taking the five hour drive from CT —> Maine.

We are looking to spend 5-6 nights, 3-4 of which will be at a Cliff House. I am trying to get myself excited about how Ogunquit is still a destination as a final trip with just my husband and I but need a little help. It seems like a lovely place and we have not yet been there (only to Portland).

How do recommend we spend our time so it feels really special?

We’ve done lots of coastal New England towns, but we’d like this trip to feel distinct for obvious reasons.

August Maine Honeymoon - Advice!

Hi!! My husband and I want to go to Maine for our honeymoon in August, around the first week probably. We will be flying to either Portland or to Boston and driving up. I am going a little crazy with trying to decide where to go and how many days to stay in each place. I want the trip to be around 7-9 nights total. We are trying to not spend over $6k and the flights are 1k. Some places I've found online to visit are ongunquit, kennebunkport, portland, bar harbor. But should we split these stays evenly?? Should we stay in one spot and travel around??

Background: we love to be active, hiking, biking, and rock climbing. But I also love a cute walkable town with local food and shops. We love coffee, wine, and fancy dinners.

TLDR; where should we spend our Maine honeymoon?

The seemingly unattainable housing market in Maine and what the best options are for people starting out?

As we all know well by now, the housing market is crazy and for anyone starting out it seems almost unattainable! I am sure most people looking for housing are in the same boat as us. The answers are limited because that's just how the economy is right now. I felt the need to come on here and ask some questions anyway for my own piece of mind.

My boyfriend (M35) and I (F30) do not make a lot of money (53k a year combined) and we keep bouncing options around on what to do. We have lived in Maine our whole lives and our family is here. Plus our parents are disabled and need us, so moving too far away from all 4 of them is not an option. I have just slowly started working again after years of taking care of both of my parents who became very sick at the same time. I have been watching the market get worse for years, and I now know that waiting for a better market probably won't happen. After being together for 6 years we desperately need a place of our own before we go crazy from only seeing each other on weekends. It seems we just need to bite the bullet and accept how things are currently.

We are looking for something between our work and each of our parents, which is in the triangle of Bath, Auburn and Windham. We really prefer not being more than 1.5 hours from Bath if we can help it. We have looked into everything from building fresh on a piece of land to buying a fixer upper. We would rather not rent because we feel like we are throwing money at something we will never own. We also need close to 1 acre of land for my boyfriend to have space outside for his work and hobbies. We don't have kids currently so it is just us and the house doesn't have to be big, it just needs to be livable. It seems like something that should be simple to obtain but is proving to be depressing to even think about. We have talked to a few lenders and have talked to a realtor but haven't locked anything in yet. We really aren't sure what to do.

So I am wondering what other people are doing for housing in Maine? What are the best affordable options right now, buying an existing house with land, putting a small stick-built, modular, or mobile/manufactured on land? Is a $200k budget even worth looking into anything new? What are some areas with affordable markets? Does anyone have an insight for the future of housing in Maine? I would like to hear from anyone who has/had our budget range or professionals who have worked with people in a similar situation.

Thanks for reading my rambles and thanks in advance for any information or comments you have!

Who tapped Graham Platner to run?

On The Daily Show he told a funny story about how it happened but he did not say specifically who asked him to run. Google says: A coalition of labor and community groups approached Graham Platner in July 2025, asking him to consider running for the U.S. Senate.

I would love to know who and the whole story. Is this information available? Thank you for any help.

Bar Harbor - how do you learn about upcoming events?

*This post was mod-approved*

My band is playing a gig in Bar Harbor in June...what I'm wondering is, how do people in the area learn about upcoming live entertainment? Are you/they more likely to pick up a newspaper and scan for events? Or listen to the radio? Is there a community board where people are more likely to see posters?

We live about 6 hours away and don't really know the area, so we'd be grateful for any intel you can share. Thank you so much! -Jenn

Relocating to Maine

I am going through a divorce, mutual decision, but still a divorce. I have selected the Belfast area to move to, but wondering if residents of Maine can offer some opinions. How is the area? I am a mental health therapist (independently licensed) and found a few places to apply, but I am worried about social life. Maine is pretty rural, but I like that, just new area. Anything you want to add or say would be appreciated.

Portland/Acadia

Our first time heading to Maine. Obviously an abundance of resources to plan things to do in Portland and Acadia, but I could use some insight regarding the drive between the areas. With the only arrival flight being late at night and the only return flight being early in the morning, we're burning two days before any planning and likely need two or three places to stay. Our question: is the drive between Portland and Acadia something to just plan a bite to eat and get from point A to point B asap, or are there towns along the way we should plan to spend extended time, book a hotel for a night, etc.? Thanks in advance to any locals or experienced travelers!

Naples causeway-working in the summer

Hello everybody!
I’m going to work this summer in Naples Causeway with the Work and Travel program. What do you think about Naples? Are there good chances to find a second job? How is the economy and job market in the region during the summer season?
Thank you all!

MDI Toddler Activities Memorial Day Weekend

My husband, our (almost) 2 yr old and I will be visiting family on Mount Desert Island for Memorial Day weekend; I would be so grateful for any suggestions for activities! The weather looks ok but not great. Hikes/walks are a possibility, but our toddler is still mastering longer walks. I’ve checked all the local library schedules and looked for events, but there doesn’t seem to be much going on for over that weekend for little ones. I’m familiar with the island as I’ve been visiting for many years, but bringing a toddler changes the picture! We’ll be staying in Somesvillle. Thank you so much for your wisdom and insights!

Bottle Redemption - Actual Machines?

Anyone know if there are places that have physical machines in which you feed your bottles and it spits out a paper ticket you can then redeem in the store? Having a hard time finding any as many stores seem to have done away with them all together. I used to go all the time, but haven’t been in a while- seems everything has changed! Looking for places that have the physical machines near Camden area, Portland area, and anything in between. Thanks in advance.

Maine lawyer?

Short version, Grandfather died and left house in Newport to my mother who was in good health. A year later my mother died out of thin air. I lived out of state. My younger sibling lived in Maine. I asked him if he could manage being the head of the estate. Well 4 years later after me asking him repeatedly if he was going to sell the property with no response he calls me and tells me I need to give him 5,500$. I had just had children and couldn’t afford it. He took out a loan and paid the taxes just to turn around and tell me the house was now his. He just couldn’t understand it was his job to sell the house. Also the taxes were paid when our mother died. Anyway two years ago I come to Maine to find the house and property a complete disaster. Walls collapsing in pipes had been cut out furnace no longer works. I end up moving in and getting the house back in shape. Last summer I moved to go work with the intention of coming back to the house in Newport. My brother had moved in told me to kick rocks. Yesterday I showed up to grab some stuff and saw my grandfather’s old desk covered in dirt and chicken poop so I took it. Sibling calls me irate because I took it. I simply said I didn’t think it would be a problem but because it is a problem he can come get it but I would like my bureau and table and chairs. Not because I need it but because he’s being absolutely ridiculous. If it was so important then why was it covered in dirt and chicken crap. 5 minutes ago I have a state cop arrive at my door and serve me a trespass.
At this point, I don’t care if we both lose the house we promised to never fight over it and I never have but he’s not doing anything he’s supposed to be doing.
Who should I contact? I have very limited funds but if there’s a lawyer out there, that’s willing to help me out his cut can come out of my share. I want him out.

Visiting for work, what should I do?

I'll be visiting for 3 weeks, have never been. I have weekends off, a company rental and gas card. I would like to explore as much of Maine as I can but I'm open to suggestions. I prefer the outdoors, but I'm open to anything besides nightclubs.

Ill be working from Portland to Rangley. Like I said I prefer the outdoors and am a decently experienced backpacker. I do magic in my free time and love a good beer. Long drives are a plus, I typically work the PNW and South including Texas so I'm fine driving 3 hours after work for a way to kill my afternoon or 10 hrs one way on a weekend for a particularly good hike.

Thanks!

I booked a place without air conditioning? Should I find a different place?

My husband and I (from west Tennessee) are staying a week in Portland, Maine, in late July. I realized this morning that the place I booked doesn’t have A/C. I’m looking at other places, and this seems fairly common for Portland.

I’ll also be nearly 7 months pregnant.

I’m reading that daytime highs in Maine in July are typically around 80 degrees F and it gets as low as the low 60s at night. That’s really different from what we’re used to in TN. Our summers are hot as hades, 100+, and A/C is essential no matter the time of day.

For reference, my husband and I keep our house at 71-74 in the summers.

Would it be a huge mistake to keep this booking? Do you recommend we choose a place with A/C?

Thanks!
