Moving from CT to SC

My wife and I are seriously considering moving from Connecticut to the Charleston, SC area within the next year or two, and I’d love to hear from people who have made a similar move or currently live there.
I’m 26 and work in municipal wastewater, and my wife is a pediatric med-surg RN.
Right now, because of my rotating work schedule, my wife only works part-time. If we moved to South Carolina, she’d be going back to full-time.
Financially, here’s what we’re looking at:
Current (Connecticut)
Me: ~$42/hour
Wife: ~$52/hour (part-time)
Combined household income: around $150k-$160k/year.
Potential move to South Carolina
Me: around $32/hour
Wife: around $40/hour (full-time)
Combined household income: roughly $145k-$155k/year before overtime.
So while I’d be taking a pay cut for the first couple years, our overall household income would end up being pretty similar because she’d be working full-time again.
One thing that’s making this decision difficult is retirement.
The jobs we’re looking at participate in the South Carolina Retirement System, which is a defined-benefit pension. From everything I’ve read:
Employees contribute about 9% of their pay.
Employers contribute over 20% toward the retirement system.
The pension is based on your years of service and salary and pays a guaranteed monthly benefit for life once you’re eligible.
That pension is a big factor for me because I’m thinking long-term and would like the security of a guaranteed retirement income.
Aside from that, we’re looking forward to warmer weather, being closer to the coast, and hopefully finding a 4-5 bedroom home on around 1.5 acres within about 45 minutes of Charleston.
For those of you who live in the Charleston area or have moved from the Northeast:
Was the move worth it?
Has your quality of life improved?
Is there anything you wish you’d known before moving?
Does our plan sound realistic, or are we overlooking something?
I’d really appreciate hearing both the positives and the negatives. We’re trying to make the most informed decision possible.

Is the South Carolina dating scene as bad as people say it is? are certain places better than others?

Hi ! I am (24F and single) moving to South Carolina this Fall for medical school and am looking for some insights into dating scene there. I lived in Greenville one summer and visit 3 times a year (stay with my friend in Clemson) so I know some things about the region. Obviously living there is different than visiting, but every time I visit I feel so drawn to the weather, the food, the walkability, the close ties I have with people in the region. I've never felt like this about a place before and struggle with seasonal depression HOWEVER these reddit threads are scaring me with what they have to share about the dating scene. Is it really that superficial and impossible to date in South Carolina (exclude Columbia)?

Can I wear a thong bikini to the beach or is that a little risqué?

I recently bought a thong bikini by mistake I did not realize how out there it would be. However the bikini is still cute and would help with tan lines. I live in South Carolina and my parents are decently conservative. I just wanted to know what are the overall views of wearing a thong bathing suit at the beach. Is it appropriate? I know in other states there are nude beaches but I wanted to know what are specific South Carolinians perspectives on thong bathing suits.

Venus Flytrap

Is there an ethical way to get a Venus Flytrap? Are there certain nurseries that are trustworthy? I live in Oconee, so even if I could harvest one, I'm not sure I have time/energy to travel to the NE corner of SC.

Thinking about moving to SC, looking at either Greenville or Columbia, can’t afford Charleston lol. Need opinions on both

Hello I’m a 29 year old black guy that lives in Raleigh NC currently, looking for a change of place and frankly someone that’s slightly cheaper. I love the outdoors but also really really enjoy having a good nightlife and plenty of food options. Was wondering if anyone can give me what it’s really like in both places .

State Job Dress Code?

Are certain piercings prohibited at state jobs?

I work for the state and l am in a cubicle 5 days a week. I want to get an eyebrow piercing, but I have not seen a set in stone dress code.
Obviously, business casual during the week and casual Fridays. I already have a nose piercing, visible tattoos, and colored hair (it is all subtle).
Would an eyebrow piercing get me in trouble even though no one has said anything about what I already have?

Can I have liquor shipped to our house?

I’m from up north, and don’t know the laws, so forgive me.

My cousins and I vacation every year in the Isle of Palms.

This year, we’re not renting a car, and it doesn’t make much sense to spend $20/drink at the resort.

Can I have liquor shipped to our door? I know you can have wine and beer delivered, but we like to make our own drinks. It would be a pain to uber to the state store, get what we need, and uber back. Hopefully that’s not the only option

Goodmorning , I’m just trying to get a understanding of the change we’re trying to make . I’m open to one sided comments , I can filter through the truth & favoritism .

Authentic low country boil/seafood within an hour of HHI, or within an hour of Charleston?

What are the best spots for true low country boil or shrimp/clams/oysters? Any small shacks / guy with modest accomodations near the water?

Curious if there's anything in the area that's a zero-frills kind of place, maybe you order at a counter, and pumps out the best seafood/boils?

Did you guys know that the Danny Ford who was running for Commissioner of Ag is the son of some football big shot?

Cause I didn't know it until today.

I saw some random headline about some old football dude doing something, and I noticed his name was the same as one of the candidates for GOP Commissioner of Agriculture.

I guess that's what happens when you don't follow sports.

Here's pops: Danny Ford - Wikipedia

Here's junior: Well, he doesn't actually have a Wikipedia page, but there's no shortage right now in terms of content about him on los interwebs.

Any young families living in SC in their 20s-30s? How does you like it? Is most of the population older/retired? Me and my gf are moving there but can’t get a grasp on the age demographic

Are people aware that South Carolina is the most seismically active zone on the east coast? It seems most people in the country are not aware and only talk about hurricanes and flooding.

There was an estimated 7.0 magnitude earthquake in 1866 within the Charleston area.
