Looking for testers of a new WW2, turn-based strategic game for PC

I'm a great fan of WW2 turn based games and board games, I've loved this genre for almost 40 years. I've been working with my friends on a PC game. It's 2 player game (axis player vs allied player, but allied player controls 2 factons: Western Allies and USSR), very high-level (army level, 2-3 month turns, no micromanagement, fairly simple combat rules), covers the European theater. The game has been in development for a few years now, and we're approaching the finish line.

I am not trying to promote the game here (it's practically impossible to post anything related to any new game being developed anywhere on reddit....), I'm writing this post as a fellow wargamer to people who play and enjoy this type of games. I just need to find someone to help testing the game before it goes live. I am willing to give away steam keys to anybody interested in playing 1-2 hours just to see if there are technical issues (does the game start? does it crash? any visual issues or other glitches? etc.) and any feedback on game-mechanics would be awesome. I will also send keys to the final product to all people who will help us testing the game.

If anybody is interested, please private message me. The game is called Virtuti Militari. I am attaching some screenshots. The game website (which includes full rulebook) can be found at Virtuti Militari Game – Strategy Game, the full rulebook and tutorial is also included in the game itself. The game isn't complicated, and I think it's possible to understand it fairly quickly, the ambition was to create something easy to learn but difficult to master.

AAO Season 15 Ranked Play Stats

Julius from Beamdog posted the stats for last season on the Steam community forum.

Season Fifteen Stats:

Total Ranked Games: 129091 (51 games per player, 707 games completed per day)
Axis wins: 70011 (54.2%)
Allies wins: 59080

The longest-running ranked game of the season (rounds): 116 rounds
The average rounds of the ranked games: 6.15

Total number of ranked players: 5077

Total number of ranked Axis players: 3923
Total number of ranked Allies players: 4066

Wood Axis players: 361
Bronze Axis players: 1081
Silver Axis players: 1477
Gold Axis players: 803
Platinum Axis players: 264

Wood Allies players: 456
Bronze Allies players: 1191
Silver Allies players: 1497
Gold Allies players: 716
Platinum Allies players: 206

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've compiled the stats for every season that they've posted, which goes back to season 6 for total games and players, and goes back to season 11 for ranking level separated by faction. (for seasons 10 and earlier, they seem to have given every player a rank for both factions even if they only played as one faction, so there are a lot of "ghosts" in the Wood ranks) So here is a nerd data dump and light analysis of that.

S15: 5077 players, 129091 games, avg 51 games played, Axis win 54.2%
S14: 4983 players, 127225 games, avg 51 games played, Axis win 54.5%
S13: 4977 players, 115143 games, avg 46 games played, Axis win 54.4%
S12: 5097 players, 123023 games, avg 48 games played, Axis win 54.2%
S11: 5291 players, 133128 games, avg 50 games played, Axis win 54.1%
S10: 4862 players, 113939 games, avg 47 games played, Axis win 54.4%
S09: 3981 players, 98742 games, avg 50 games played, Axis win 54.1%
S08: 4144 players, 102105 games, avg 49 games played, Axis win 53.8%
S07: 4334 players, 106387 games, avg 49 games played, Axis win 54.1%
S06: 4128 players, 109562 games, avg 53 games played, Axis win 53.2%

From Seasons 6-9, the game had an average ranked player population of 4150 per season, with the average player completing 50 games per season. Seasons 10-15 have averaged 5050 ranked players per season, with the average player still completing 50 games per season. Board Game Nation's Youtube series on the 2023 World Championships, which got a quarter of a million views, is credited for bringing in almost 1000 new players.  (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMu2lpi84ZaiUkC5v19Rp1Rr2s3_P1V4l)

During all of this, the Axis win rate has hovered around 54.3% per season. The last time this number fell outside of 54.1-54.5% was season 8.

Beamdog has only posted fully faction-separated ranking data (taking into account that some players only play as one side and not giving them a ranking for the side they don't play) since season 11. Over these 5 seasons, the average breakdown by side has been:

Axis-only players: 19%
Allies-only players: 22%
Dual players: 59%

Wood Axis: 8.6%
Bronze Axis: 25.1%
Silver Axis: 38.8%
Gold Axis: 21.1%
Platinum Axis: 6.8%

Wood Allies: 11.0%
Bronze Allies: 28.8%
Silver Allies: 36.9%
Gold Allies: 17.8%
Platinum Allies: 5.5%

It would be a little bulky to paste here, but these percentages hardly changed at all from one season to the next. Season 15, which had the third-highest number of players from any posted season, had the second-largest percent of W/B Allies and the largest percent of W/B Axis, suggesting the small (2%) increase in players this season might represent actual new players joining.

Using the assumptions of a standard chess Elo system with normal distribution, mean 1500 and standard deviation 200, these player distributions imply:

Axis
Wood/Bronze Cutoff: 1227
Bronze/Silver Cutoff: 1416
Silver/Gold Cutoff: 1619
Gold/Platinum Cutoff: 1804

Allies
Wood/Bronze Cutoff: 1254
Bronze/Silver Cutoff: 1448
Silver/Gold Cutoff: 1646
Gold/Platinum Cutoff: 1819

These numbers were consistent across the 5 seasons. I would bet that the real cutoffs in the game's code are 1200/1400/1600/1800, and that the implied difference is due to points decay from inactivity (confirmed to be part of their Elo/MMR system) and unequal winrates between the sides. Unsurprisingly, inactivity seems higher at lower levels. Allies implied cutoffs are "higher" due to the Axis winning the majority of games... the game code likely has the same cutoffs for both, but they're slightly harder to reach as Allies.

Allied bid to balance the Italians getting an extra destroyer?

My friend and I have been playing a few sessions of Global 1940 recently, and he - tired of my Taranto raids - requested a bid so Italy can have a game where it gets off its feet and have fun crushing the Med.

The bid is a destroyer placed in SZ99, blocking the Allied fleet and thus guaranteeting that Italy’s navy survives the first turn.

He’s at my skill level, if not higher: so these situations naturally kill the game’s balance, but I’ve been playing this out on the condition that I’m not responsible for losing ;) That being said, I wonder if there is an equivalent Allied bid that could offset Italy’s fleet surviving and retain the balance of the game. Given the existing disparity between Axis and Allied forces, and the amount of Axis units left on the board as a result of Italy’s fleet being guaranteed to live, I imagine it would have to be in the 10-20 IPC range. But exactly where that cash would appear on the board, I’m not sure. What do you all think?

Games ending after new season begins - count towards rankings?

I just had a game finish, that was started in season 15, but finished in season 16.

I was under the impression that those games counted towards the season they were completed in.

However, the win isn’t showing up in the stats of either season… it’s been about 30 minutes so far and hasn’t updated.

Are games in this situation just lost within the rankings platform??

After I finished turn 1 as the Japanese the UK's surface fleet was all of 1 transport. Did I make the right call?

Normally I hit pearl harbor but after the UK took Borneo and New Guinea I realized I had a chance to eliminate the UK's entire surface fleet because RD1 Germany went well and RD1 UK went poorly.

I don't really know how to play against a strong USA in the Pacific and its not what I am used to at all. I feel pretty good about the map but am nervous and exited to try this out.

I am thinking of slowly adding Subs to the North Atlantic so that the UK never gets a surface fleet going.

Best Computer Sim opponent recommendation

Hi all, Triple A user here. I’ve beaten the computer on hard mode for all the maps I care about and am now bored 😅

Any recommendations for the best computer opponent systems out there, or is playing against a human the only way?

Can you lose bonus income through national objectives again?

Hi there,

we're going to play our first AxisAllies game ever. What I did not understand from the rules: once I reach on of my national obejctives, I move forward my marker on National Production tracking chart for the bonus income. But do I lose them again, once the enemy reconquered the territory? It makes sense historically, but I find nothing in the rules.

Thank you!

Major Axis victory

The best game I've ever had playing the Axis in North Africa, Allied player made two huge late-game mistakes I can think of that ended with the Americans being thrown back into the sea, one early game mistake that resulted in the capture of Tobruk. The opponent is not a noob either, I would say we are fairly matched in North Africa, and typically have a minor or major Allied victory no matter who plays what side. But you can’t blunder that badly.

Biggest regret was being one British infantry away from a total victory. Otherwise, Rommel's last push was a success.

Anniversary Addition - How to Avoid Stalemates?

I’m a pretty new player and am playing AE 1941. I’m playing all factions to get a feel for the various strategies and also because I don’t have a reliable group to play with. I get that playing this way makes it impossible to feign a strategy or surprise an opponent, but it still seems like the game can/should quickly devolve into a stalemate if Russia falls. At that point, it seems like Germany’s economy is large enough that if the Axis just hunkers down and goes into defense mode, it will be nearly impossible for either side to achieve 18 victory cities. I assume I went wrong in the early rounds of the game and there are early openers that may have set the board down a different path. Open to any tips from the more experienced players! For context, Germany just ended their turn after retaking Northwestern Europe and Norway, and mobilizing new troops in Germany and Caucuses.

Axis strategy

Has anyone found a great way to win consistently with the Axis in North Africa? My play group using Rommel’s Last Push has found that the Allies will usually win. One time they took Tunis by turn 10, like these aren’t close defeats. The only reliable way I’ve found is to cut off Malta’s 15 RPs, else you don’t stand a chance. My G1 I buy 5 sea mines to take out the royal navy, and Italy makes 2 more behind them. This is the best way I’ve found to nerf Malta fast. But such a large investment sometimes doesn’t work, and I’m wondering if anyone else has other ways that usually work to beat the Allies in North Africa. Thanks!

Anniversary Edition UK Tip Request

Hey yall, I’ve recently gotten into axis and allies and I’ve been playing a lot of Japan because I love boats and they are definitely my fav axis power to play

However recently I started playing more allies and I wanted to have a “allies main” like I have my axis main which is Japan

I dont wanna play Russia because how land locked they are and I tried the US but they are a bit too passive (I might be playing them wrong) so I decided I wanted to get good at the UK and main them for the allies

I’m curious if anyone has any good UK tips like opening moves or weaknesses/strengths to keep in mind or just general good UK tips

Thank you for any info you can provide!

Axis & Allies 1914 Expansion!

Did you feel that the original boardgame was missing that truly "Global" war feeling? Then you were not the only one! Take a look at my custom map I made as an optional expansion for those who want to experience in my upcoming series remake the far eastern and Pacific-Asian theater of WW1.

It adds the following:

• Japan as a new minor Entente power.

• The Chinese civil war and warlord period.

• Feel the colonial warfare and regional fleet clashes at the star of the war while Germany tries to safeguard its squadron in the ocean and hold on to its overseas possessions.

• Adds some Historical rebellions in Vietnam and Singapur!

Upcoming diplomacy, wars and rules later on this year. This map is a mere expansion to play with original game revision to feel the true scale of what was the great war more than a hundred years ago. Stay tuned!

Die with more sides- more even probabilities?

Fairly sure the math makes this not work, but I'm wondering if anyone smarter than I can provide some input.

Been playing global 1940 like crazy and I love it. Biggest issue, though, is that the hits on die seem to be very luck dependent.

Would having higher sided die, like using D12 instead of D6, with hits using same probabilities for each unit. Ex- cruiser still hits and defends with 50% chance of both, so hits on 6 or less, misses 7 or higher.

Would this theoretically even out some of the rolls? I do like having some luck in the game, makes it feel more real than just hard defense and attack numbers, but still feels too much currently.

If the math does prevent this, then alternatively, if we got higher D-die, would rebalancing each unit help with this? Such as using a D16 and cruisers hit on 7 or less, and miss 8 or higher.
