Need help teaching son to not get pushed outside on a fast break

In transition, my son is really fast and is often in a one-on-one situation against a defender. I want to try to get him to push the defender towards the middle to where the basket is for a layup but he is somehow always pushed out towards the side where it would no longer be considered a layup because he is no longer in the paint. What moves can he use to get the defender to stop pushing him away from the key?

Why can't men and women play on the same team for pickup basketball?

I mean there are all kinds of co-ed softball everywhere. Hell even some men's baseball teams let girls play if they wish to take on the challenge.

Yet with basketball in pickup, it's often a difficult task to either have women accept to join a team, even if she's more skilled than half of the guys on the court.

So much so that it becomes less common to see a girl at the pickup courts. Like there was even a post on this. So why is gender such a problem in basketball but not softball?

Where’s traditional hoops at?

You may think I’m an “old head” but I’m pretty young Gen Z era. But I’m more of a traditional basketball player not like peach baskets as hoops but more of the 2000s-10s type of style. I know the game evolves but recently the NBA/ just regular basketball is just going downhill. Recently played a pick up game at the local rec and some kid has the ball on the offensive end, crosses and try’s for a layup but during the drive he was holding my arm so I couldn’t defend. Which is clearly a “offensive” foul and I told him that and he said it wasn’t and just was part of the game 😭. Just basketball became so lackluster

What are the priorities for development?

19 , 6'2 6'3 wingspan 72 kgs.

I want to improve but idk what skills are most important

I grew early so I used to play the 4 in my country's equivalent of high school. My best trait is probably my perimeter defense, so I don't think that's my priority to work on that. Finishing is pretty decent , but it's between that , handle or shooting. I wanna join a league or something when I get settled into my new flat. I've started the gym as well so this recommendation is strictly off of what you guys think is expected of me. Is it important to be able to stretch the floor more than get to the rim. Also some game film players for me to look at would be appreciated, any questions lmk and I'll answer them if it helps

What ball for outdoors?

So recenlty me and my homies started playing basketball and we do have a ball that I think it is preaty nice (idk witch ball it is) but it is my friend so I can't practice by myself and that is why I want to buy something nice but aslo not too expensive, something that feels nice when dribling and shooting but doesn't make me broke so a ball up to 50 dolars but if there are cheaper optoins that would be nice

Is it time for the US high school/college rulebooks to adopt the gather step?

I think the game is better without it, but considering that the NBA and the international game both use it, and the current state of ball handling/scoring moves, it makes sense IMO. Curious what others think though

Fundamentals at the top levels of the game

Among the first things every youth player is taught is to follow their shot. Coaches in gyms across the nation scream "FOLLOW!!!" every time someone takes a jump shot.

However, elite college and NBA players rarely do this, which is one reason why offensive rebounding is down. Why?

Wearing sunglasses on a sunny day for outdoor pickup basketball?

I see a lot of baseball and softball players wear sunglasses all the time when they play outdoors, especially in the bright golden sun. What about with pickup basketball? Nobody does that. But should I wear it when playing pickup basketball outdoors in the sun? I do it when I'm playing daytime rec softball games.

"Every player in the NBA is somebody's favorite player." Declare your favorite player and let's see if r/nba can prove it.

I saw an interesting post on r/pokemon where the community banded together and each declared their favorite pokemon, until eventually each pokemon had at least one vote, proving that every pokemon is someone's favorite.

I thought that the reddit nba community could do the same and test the adage that every player in the NBA is somebody's favorite player. I made a website where users declare their favorite player, why, and can see the community results.

The things I wonder about after enough people vote:

  • Who will be the last player to be declared someone's favorite?
  • Are there players that are so obscure/hated that they get no votes?

A resurgence of fitness center bb court traffic?

What lead to the change in 2025? I guess the 2022-2024 slump comes to an end? Some speculate the slump was caused by social awkwardness after the world reopened and leagues started to play again people didn’t like losing or competing even with friends anymore. Some go into leagues and then quit after losing and vow to stay away from it.

It was a ghost town at bb courts not so long ago even during the afternoon early evening hours with one or two shooting hoops at best and no maintainance of the room at all, no resurfacing, light bulbs burn out, HVAC vents blocked, some places eventually or should I say finally decided to demolish those underutilized eyesores and expand the workout floor, but recently I was surprised to see a sign at a local gym saying don’t use buddy passes at the bb court likey to ration the crowd as the place was alive and crowded with games again quite a contrast.

I be curious what happened to cause the sudden change? Thought it was dead.

Super Casual - How good are Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle?

Super NBA casual. Follow the names, know who they are. But can’t really describe the nuances between them. I see the spurs are in the WCF and just won game 1 against this nasty thunder team. I could’ve swore people in the past said neither of those players are all that good.

Stephon castle. People said his draft class was really weak, he’s not someone to rely on. Yet he seems productive on the spurs? Is he being productive relative to jis 2023 peers, or is he just productive.

Dylan Harper. In the beginning of the year they were saying he was the worst pick of the top lottery this past draft class. Yet same as castle he’s being very good. Did he just lock in? Did his role change?

Granted they’re young, can’t hold that against them. But they seemed to have criticism earlier that others didn’t. Are they just good second fiddles now or are they really good NBA players?

How Do New Uniform Brands Earn Trust With Coaches and Club Teams?

I recently started a basketball uniform manufacturing business and I’m trying to figure out the most legit/effective way to reach coaches and basketball clubs.

We’re open to sponsoring some club teams with uniforms as well, especially if it helps build long-term relationships and credibility.

For those who’ve worked with teams, coaches, or sports organizations:

What outreach methods actually work?

Is cold DM/email outreach worth it?

Are tournaments and AAU events better for networking?

How do smaller/new uniform brands earn trust early on?

Would appreciate any real advice from people in the space.

Thanks.

The Hype Surrounding Victor Wembanyama

Anyone else just doesn't want to see or hear everyone's stupid opinions on this guy?

I already see TikTok comments saying he's the 🐐, the national media comparing him to Wilt (goofy @ss Michael Wilbon) and I'm sure some kind of way they're going to compare him to Michael Jordan.

I'd rather just watch the guy dominate without all the nonsense hype he's going to get.

I watched the media and fans slander and rage bait Kobe, and to an even greater extent LeBron 24/7. I'm just going to do my best to tune out the noise and enjoy this potential legend with as little BS as possible.

I'm grateful he's unique and that we don't have to see Jokics boring personality or thousand yard stare or cringey, boring foul baiting SGA dominating the league. Wemby is an amazing player and would be a great face of the league (especially over those weirdos).

Net/hoop advice

Hi guys, been playing 2k mobile for ages and was good at basketball at school so was going to get a net for the back garden. Apart from being able to move it about, are there any real differences between getting a portable one on a stand or one I attach to outside of house? Not played in like 15 years lol so was only going to get one I bolt or screw into the outside of the house

A few Players keep slamming their shoulder into my chest during pickup games

This has happened to me several times. I play pickup sometimes with this AAU guy who extremely explosive and normally blows by me, but for whatever reason I managed to recover, and he lowered his shoulder and slammed it right at my diaphragm to create space for himself, pushing the air out of my lungs causing a lot of pain. He then made a fadeaway. I told him wtf dude and he and he said that he was just posting up and to get good. Several other guys I play with have slammed their shoulders into my chest, and most recently a guy who tried to blow by me hit me in the jaw with his shoulder, and said that I fouled him even though neither he nor I was moving when I started defending .

Is ducking and slamming your defender with your shoulder with as much force as possible in order to get separation legal? Should I foul call these guys out if they keep hitting me in the chest and face with their shoulders when being defended?
