Introducing Maggie

Maggie's our tiny, three year old, 34 lb. boxer rescue. We got her almost exactly two years ago. She had just turned one. She was seized from a backyard breeder/hoarding situation and had been underfed and mistreated. Zero socialization. Confined alone in a crate. She was terrified of everything. Couldn't climb stairs, or walk on a lead. Mealtimes must have been traumatic because getting her to eat was a real struggle. She would just sit on her spot on the couch and tremble. She'd snuggle between my wife and I in bed though.

I was convinced she was a mix due to her size, but we did DNA testing and she's pure Boxer. Probably not great genetics and being chronically malnourished her first year didn't help. But she's healthy.

She's my little goblin-faced princess. The only dog I've ever had that has been incapable of annoying me, ever. She still has a ways to go but is becoming a real dog now. She knows she's home.

Now That Frankie is Out of His Splint, It’s Time For New Toys!!

To celebrate Frankie’s freedom from his leg splint, I decided they needed yet more toys to play with! So Penny got a new chicken, and Frankie got his first piggy today! So this has been an all day event, and I’ve never been more grateful for my set of airpods in my life!

Frankie is absolutely delighted to have all four feet free again, and so am I! His leg is still very weak after a month of being in the splint, so he’s going to have to build up those muscles again before he can be declared fully recovered. I do have some concerns about the alignment of his wrist and foot, but both vets have urged patience until he has had a chance to get used to using it to support his weight again, and for the strength to return in his muscles. I certainly hope they’re right.

But for right now, it’s just so great to see him having a blast with his new toy, and playing with his Big Sister without having a piece of plastic attached to his leg! Of course, I’ve only had to remind Penny to be gentle with her Little Brother about fifty times in the last two days, but all in all, she’s really doing pretty good about not getting too rough with him.

And now, back to the squeaking and grunting, folks!

Ripley in a daze after stitches

We had new windows put in our house recently and the installers left a bunch of super tiny pieces of aluminum flashing/cap material in the mulch. Ripley stepped on a piece and sliced the metacarpal pad in a super weird spot. It's kind've on the side between the metacarpal pad and the outer digital pad. It wouldn't stop bleeding so I had to take her in and 2 hours and $500 later she has four stitches, a leg wrap, the cone of shame, and post-sedation euphoria.

Poor pup isn't happy about it. Neither am I. :(

David Klass custom set: DOGS!!!

My dogs wedding set from David Klass, featuring my current boxers (brindle and white with an eye patch) on the engagement ring and the band, and my late old boy walking behind them, supervising, on the band.

Engagement ring inspired by their love of frisbee and typical boxer playfighting pose, the band is their signature running shapes.

What do ya'll think? (Polite criticism is ok, I'm not changing it anyway, lol)

Edit: ring size M (UK), 6.5 US, 2ct center stone, specs in comments.

Back story from the comments: It's definitely not everyone's go-to style, not even mine, and I am still getting used to the size of the set, but every time I look at it, it warms my heart. I see my late soul dog Juno on the band, and I remember the day on his favorite beach on the East Coast, where I took the photo used for the band, and his love for big tennis balls. I see my lunatics Jovy and Lilly at their playtime, tearing apart that frisbee and knocking each other out with their paws, Lilly's eye patch and Jovy's round head and stripes. I see Jovy pouncing after a toy in the field where we go every week, and Lilly leaping over a fallen tree on the forest trail where my husband and I met on a dog walk (of course). It captures the essence of our family and the best times together - in the wild, with the dogs lunaticking and us encouraging the lunacy and silliness.

Sensitive stomachs tip - soak the kibble

I have a boxer mix Clover, who has always struggled with stomach acid issues. She just hit 10 years old and the acid issues have gotten worse in the past year. Frequent groaning, lip licking and grass eating, with the occasional acid throw up when it's been too long since her last meal. I tried medicine, changing her food and giving probiotics which helped some but issues have persisted. Then the other day I read something, try soaking her kibble in hot/warm water before meals. I have always given her water with her kibble but never tried soaking it.

What I read said soak for 30 minutes but I found that soaking in hot water for 10-15 minutes is enough. The kibble expands greatly and makes it much easier to digest than sitting in her stomach for hours making the acid pump work overtime. It has made a huge difference and my sweet Clover now snores deeply instead of waking up with stomach pain.

My thinking is.. It's kind of like if all your meals were protein bars with a little water. It would cause indigestion sooner or later, no doubt.

New Toy Zoomies!

Five bucks. Five dollars and these two dryer balls are the most entertaining purchase I’ve made in a minute. Hours she plays with these two unscented regular dryer balls. When she stops, I know one rolled under the couch. Took her outside while I had a hot tub and boom, Zoomies set in and boom, they stopped. Thought I’d share the goofiness. Her name is Ollie :)

Breathing and Age

Ten year old Boxer. Is this breathing part of old age or is there something that can make this better? He just started this a few months ago and seems to be getting worse. We always walked 1.5 miles in the evening and now he can barely make it .5. I know he is old. Just curious to what others have been thru with aging boxer.
