Report: As Temperatures Rise, So Does Townswomen’s Interest in Infrastructure Spending | The Brookline Turkey
“We had the opportunity to listen to the construction crews’ side of the story, over a friendly case of Pinot,” said petitioner Ann Levin outside the St. Mary’s T stop, soberly dressed aside from a necklace whose unusual pendant looked, on closer inspection, like a brass compression nut.
“And once you hear directly from the men whose tanned, powerful hands manipulate—nay, tame—that heavy equipment, the candlelight softening, without emasculating, their ruddy faces, you begin to understand what this work really demands: a vigorous refusal to withdraw too early.”

College student looking for a job where I can do Homework
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a second job where I can get my homework done! I’m a barista that needs some extra spending money but also need to make I have time to do homework. Any suggestions in the Brookline/Allston/Boston area? (I go to an online college so no campus jobs are available)

Squirrel Riding Duck in the Public Garden
Saw this little wannabe cowboy in the Public Gardens today. We’re so lucky to have such a great public space populated by such beautiful wildlife. Teach kids young to respect animals, including these guys!
Green Street Activity
Anyone know what the police activity on Green Street is about?

Does anyone buy monthly parking near Coolidge Corner? I’m looking on SpotHero and everything is $400+ or $500+ which feels crazy

Hvac techs
Hello - seeking recommendations for hvac techs. Have used Sila and Atlantic before, but don’t like their high pressure sales tactics.
Any smaller hvac shops that people have used and are happy with? Looking to get system tune up for a/c units
Seeking friends for my mother who is visiting from Korea to explore the local area together
Hi everyone! My mother is visiting from Korea and staying with me for the next 6 weeks.
While I am at work, it would be wonderful if she could meet some friends to explore the local area and Boston.
She is 50 and her English proficiency is basic, so bonus points if you or someone you know speaks Korean.
Trying currently: meeting people at Korean church communities. And signing up for some community events and classes (English classes at library)
I also posted to Craigslist community activity partners section seeking a walking partner
Desperate. Splash pads?
Hi village
Scorching tomorrow. At my wits end. Kids driving us crazy.
Anyone know of any splash pads or public pools in brookline that opened earlier in the season?
With override passed, can Brookline tackle tough questions about teacher pay?

brookline.newsSpeed limits and tiny rotaries
I’ve lived in and out of Brookline for more than 30 years. Since I could drive I felt the insanity and stress of driving on Lee street and fearing a speeding ticket, and I just accepted it since it’s always been vaguely a speed trap right at Warren when the limit drops. But now it’s going up and down between 20-25 all along it and I recently noticed (somehow just for the first time) that there are so many significantly smaller streets with higher speed limits around town.
Main question: why is the speed limit so low on Lee street? There’s no schools, almost never anyone walking across it, why is the speed limit 20-25mph?
But also over the last 10-20 years we’ve also seen a rise of these little micro rotaries (two that come to mind are behind the high school and on south street all the way by putterham) - and especially the south street one seems to have exclusively made driving there worse - more dangerous.
So basically I’m an adult now and back living here again and just want to know how these decisions get made. Where do they get made? Who are the loud neighbors talking to to get these things changed or not changed, and how can I talk to them too? It makes me feel kind of crazy anyone thinks these are good or helpful ideas, but maybe there’s some information I don’t have about these choices that made them reasonable? And knowing it would make me less frustrated? How do I use my vote to help this sort of thing?
Where are the traffic cops?
Thought I might be exaggerating in my mind so I made an effort to track my observations. 13 out of 15 days, I have observed one of the following at Harvard and Williams Streets intersection:
- cars making a left from Harvard onto Williams when the light is RED (two of the times, there was at least one pedestrian in the cross walk - the pedestrian had the green light, the car went through the red light)
- electric scooters going the wrong direction. Williams is a one way street and the bikes were driving down it the wrong way (driving down Williams into Harvard)
- cars turning right in red when pedestrians were in crosswalk
- cars stopping in the middle of Williams (not parking, not pulling over), and the driver getting out and going into Bakey (blocking the road so other cars have to wait for them to be done with Bakey)
I don’t understand why I never see a cop there at that intersection.
And, tonight was fun when a person rode their electric scooter on the sidewalk from Coolidge Corner many blocks, heading towards Commonwealth Ave yelling “Fuck you!”
at everyone walking on the sidewalk.
I’m just so curious why we rarely see police around? BTW, I respect the police and have many family members (5+) that are or were cops. Just curious where the ones in Brookline are?
Seeking in-person ESL English lessons one-on-one tutoring
Are there any local in-person tutors available for hire?
Tried so far: conversation club at Brookline library. Appreciate the group but did not meet my needs (pacing).
I also emailed Brookline library for 1-on-1 tutoring availability but haven't hear back yet (the website mentions there is often a shortage of tutors) https://www.brooklinelibrary.org/ongoing/ell/
I also saw on Monday Boston public library will open grammar class registration, so I will try that too. https://www.bpl.org/ell/
I also saw Brookline Rec has ESL classes, but I need beginner level. https://www.register.brooklinerec.com
I also found this at the senior center, I will contact Dick Morse

This is for my mother who speaks Korean.
Fire Boxes - still in use?
Does Brookline Fire Dept still maintain telegraph fire boxes?
If they do, is there a map available of where they are located?
The one pictured is a Boston box.
