My 12-year-old canary won’t keep one eye open. Need advice

Hi everyone. I’m looking for advice about my 12-year-old canary.

For the past few days, he has been keeping one eye closed most of the time. Sometimes he opens it briefly, but then closes it again immediately, as if it bothers him or hurts.

He is still very active: eating normally, moving around, perching well, and behaving like usual. No major behavior changes.

At first we thought it could be an infection because he scratches around that area sometimes. We carefully cleaned around the eye and applied a very small amount of Gentalyn around the outside area (not directly inside the eye). The next day the eye looked a bit swollen but seemed slightly better. However, now it’s still mostly closed.

We also improved his diet:
- carrots
- apples
- quality seeds
- cuttlebone
- occasional lettuce (dried well)
- fresh water changed often

No obvious breathing issues at the moment.

I’m worried because of his age and because exotic vets are very far from where I live. Does this look/sound more like:
- conjunctivitis?
- eye injury?
- mites?
- irritation?
- something more serious?

What would you recommend doing safely at home until I can possibly reach a specialist?

Are female canaries loud?

I’ve been thinking about getting a female canary since I’ve heard that female canaries are usually quieter than male ones. But I’m worried that she might still be loud 😭 Soft chirping noises are fine with me, and it wouldn’t bother me if she sings sometimes, but I don’t think I could handle it if she’s constantly loud, especially while I’m studying 😔

Canary chick splayed legs

Greg the Egg hatched Sunday, and I noticed today his legs are spread out to the sides instead of tucking under him. I’ve scheduled a vet appointment for the morning to have them hopefully splint his legs in the right position. Has anyone else successfully fixed a chick’s legs? He’s so tiny, it seems impossible. But it sounds like it needs to be done ASAP as he’s growing.

Opinions about grandma's cage?

This is my grandmas bird, she loves him very much, takes the best care of him, gives him fresh fruit and lettuce everyday, they sometimes let him out to roam. My question is, is this cage size okay? What toys could i buy to enrich his life?

In need of help

This morning my canary was more or less fine but at around noon he couldnt get up, bubbles came out from his nostrils and now he is doing this bobbing movement, he was fine yesterday.

Any idea what it might be?

(Ignore his overgrown beak we trim it frequently because he refuses to use his perches or the cuttlefish bone he has)

Female alongside male ?

I would like to know if I can keep a female in a cage alongside my male canary. The cage is approximately 66 × 38 × 66 cm (about 26 × 15 × 26 inches), but I am planning to upgrade to a 75 × 48 × 91 cm cage (about 29.5 × 18.9 × 35.8 inches).

I have heard that they should only be kept together during breeding periods, otherwise the male may chase the female. However, I would like to have a small pair that can live together peacefully.

I should also mention that each bird would have its own separate water and food source to avoid conflicts.

HELP !! CANARY WEIRD BEHAVIOR

My canary suddenly started wobbling and kind of rocking his head like he’s confused or can’t balance properly. He looks very weak and doesn’t really want to eat or drink. No vet around me right now and I’m honestly worried.

I attached a video if anyone recognizes this behavior or knows what I can do.

Why is my canary making this sound?

You might have to turn up the volume, it’s not that loud. We were setting the birds down to sleep and my canary started this making sound again.

He was making this same sound earlier today, and the first time he made it was 2 days ago at about 10p.m. He was awake until about 12 that night despite the fact that he usually falls alseep by 8.

Enjoy my flock of Fife canaries!

I posted on here before; however, my account was sadly hacked. As such, I had to create a new one. I hope that you enjoy these pictures of my Fife canaries.

Canary stopped singing after an attack

I have an amazing canary rhat recently got attacked by a hawk kind of bird and I managed to save him at the last moment.

As far as I can he see it did not physically harm him but he stopped singing and it feels like he is depressed now. ive been trying hard to make him feel safe again but nearly 10 days passed and he still is not singing again.

Any idea on how do I help him?

Goldfinch hybrid experiences

Hello finch keeping people, does anyone here have canary-goldfinch hybrids like these two birds of mine? I took them in as rehomers. They needed a new home urgently, so I had to make a quick decision. It has been diificult trying to find information, so I would love to hear about your experiences. Especially, what kind of differences compared to canaries ( I am used to keeping canaries ).

My biggest concern is the male is chasing my canary male relentlessly now. My birds live together free-roaming in their own room usually, but now I need to the two males separately. Are things gonna be better when it is no longer spring I am in Scandinavia)? The hybrids came here 5 weeks ago, and the hybrid male was friendly at first.

I'd really like to keep the hybrids but I hating keeping my birds in cages. If it is only a few months every spring/ summer, that is okay though.
