Your favorite line from Chapter 5?

Your favorite line from Chapter 5?

Mine is this one. Ralsei being the one to say it just made it 100× better.

I'm working on a Deltarune concept inspired by Underswap, and I'd like some ideas and opinions.

It's a project with the potential to become a fangame, but it's still in the concept stage. I'm looking for opinions on the designs and character swaps.

This project started out kind of aimlessly, but it scaled up over time.

Chapter 5 was recently released and honestly I'm not sure if the change or style turned out well.

It's insane that Susie can't remember what had Sans.

Like, follow the logic, Susie can't remember what was there before Sans' house, right? So that's complete nonsense.

If we look at the timeline, Sans says he's new to town, to the point that he barely knows anyone there, so he's been there for at most a week or something like that.

Okay? So, Susie lives LITERALLY NEXT DOOR TO HIS HOUSE, her apartment is the one on the far right and she's presumably been in Hometown for at least months (she said she dressed up as a box for Halloween if I remember correctly). Although she's the new girl, she's not as new as Sans.

So think about it this way, every day she wants to leave the apartment and go to school or anywhere else, she's forced to pass by Sans's house... SO HOW THE HELL DOES SHE NOT REMEMBER WHAT WAS THERE BEFORE HIM?!????

Not only that, but even if you don't believe that Susie goes home every day even before the events of the game, we also know that she goes to the alley to drink the milk that Alphys puts there, so she would still be forced to pass by Sans' house.

It's even more absurd because in the dialogue about the Ferris wheel (which Sans operates, by the way), when you think about Susie and Noelle, Kris also seems to have trouble remembering who operated the Ferris wheel \*before Sans\*, and the text even says that Sans isn't qualified for the job...

The worst part? Despite theories that he came from Deltarune, he's apparently the new guy in town who suddenly showed up \*again\* SO WHERE THE HELL DID HE COME FROM??? WHERE WAS THIS SKELETON BORN?

I lose my temper with him, man, he can't keep doing this to me.

(ps: the text in all caps is a joke, I'm not really mad, but honestly, nobody remembering what came before sans is very weird lol)

This is legit the first time I actually feel like the final boss of a chapter is climatic and difficult and deserves real preparation.

Yes, the titan isn't even hard if you have the shadow mantle and the black shard.

Tier list about who Susie should tell about the dark world.

This isn't based on her knowledge, Realistically, she shouldn't know whether many of these people are good candidates or not, or who is suspicious or not.

Papyrus is kind of a joke, but honestly, maybe he's okay depending on his relationship with Gaster? The rest is serious though.

Mettaton would be in the same tier as Napstablook if they were both on the list

Based on my reasoning, ghosts have a certain advantage in being invincible, and Mettaton specifically could fuse with Tenna, which I think would make Tenna and Mettaton invincible... probably

Furthermore, since Mew Mew already knows about the Dark World, she could convince Napstablook and Mettaton to participate or help. Napstablook is a police officer, so it's his job, and besides, the knight probably would have trouble capturing ghosts.

Alphys is unpredictable because, of all the adults, she's the one I'm most certain doesn't know anything, wouldn't get into a silly conflict, and would certainly help if asked. Besides, she's intelligent. The problem is that she's somewhat defenseless and could get too caught up in the fantasy, and end up ruining everything.

Toriel would be helpful if she weren't probably against Kris and Susie participating in this adventure in the first place; she's probably strong, but we see with Asgore that letting your parents get involved isn't a good idea.

If you want to know the reasoning behind other characters, you can ask.

I legit feel sorry for Susie in this scene of chapter 5

If she isn't referring to castle town then this all but confirms that Susie is homeless and lives in the school storage/closet

Why doesn't anyone talk about this?

I don't see literally ANYBODY talking about how Ralsei knows Kris is creating the dark fountains. HOW?! And why isn't he telling Susie? (Okay, I get this last part, but still..)

Why doesn't he like, do anything? I mean sure, technically he does know about the player (confirmed because of the menus) but seriously, how and why not do anything...

u/agreedable_donkey — 18 hours ago

I feel the same (OC)

💚💛 I still need them to interact, I really think they would be good friends :>

Very possible we become a scapegoat for Kris

As of Chapter 5, Susie has seemingly considered the possibility that Kris is opening fountains, but she discards the idea because she knows “Kris wouldn’t do that”. This has generally been interpreted by the fandom as Susie being in denial, but I think she’s being pretty reasonable here. Both Kris fountains have put their parents in incredible danger and Asgore was kidnapped because of it. We don’t have a solid answer for why Kris puts their Dad in the sacrifice shelter and we’re literally the friend inside them.

Now imagine that Susie finds out that there is this separate entity that sometimes possesses Kris and makes them do things they don’t want to do. Suddenly the contradiction is solved. Kris wouldn’t create fountains, but “we” would. Kris wouldn’t help kidnap their own parents, but “we” would. Kris wouldn’t betray her, but “we” would.

Granted, this depends on what order Susie gets what information and if Ralsei decides to not spill the beans, so there’s no guarantee this is how the story will play out. But I think it’s pretty in line with the dramatic irony the story is playing with and it’s an easy opportunity for Kris angst. My mental image is Susie telling the soul they’ll never forgive us for all the stuff Kris actually did. Because obviously Deltarune hasn’t tortured this kid enough.

Also I find the concept of Kris’ going “Why would Chara do that?” mildly amusing.

Theory: Carol is blocking the player from leaving Hometown

I think Carol, working with Kris, is deliberately blocking the player from leaving Hometown.

During the festival, we learn the police tape's been replaced with a new one. At this point, Undyne's held in the shelter, and idk if Napstablook can, like, hold things. So if not the police, the most likely candidate for replacing the tape is probably the mayor. But why would she do this?

The entirety of Hometown is confined. The trees are very tightly packed. The only exits are the pathway blocked off by tape and the lake (and we've seen where that leads). And not only is it confined, but it's completely isolated from the outside world. The internet was recently cut off. Tenna's only playing reruns. Alvin's been receiving condolence letters for Gerson until recently. So, what's going on?

From Chapter 4's Holiday manor segment, we can piece together that Kris and Carol are probably working together. I'm guessing the reason her voice sounds different over the phone depending on the route is that, when the voice box is jagged, she's actually in the shelter. And we've now gotten confirmation that she's been "investigating" in the shelter. I'm not sure exactly what they're working towards, but we can assume it involves the Knight in some way.

Something else we learn in Chapter 5 is that other characters can go places the SOUL can't. This whole time, I thought the lake was deep and on the edge of a cliff. But, no, Susie just walks into it. She also just walks through the spikes. In WR, Noelle has to walk Kris into the lake. In NR, Ralsei has to walk through the spikes. From this, we can understand that the SOUL has to abide by certain rules. And I'm saying the SOUL specifically, because Kris can go through windows and other pathways that they can't access with the SOUL.

I'm sure Kris understands this rule, and if they understand this, wouldn't they tell Carol so they can use it to their advantage? During the festival, there are very conveniently placed obstacles blocking the way to the shelter where Carol is "investigating." Maybe it's just classic video game blocking, but if these two know about the SOUL, are using it for their plan, and understand its limitations, is it really far-fetched to suggest they might be deliberately restricting the player's movement? Hell, even NormalNPC does this.

Now, the real question is why. I think the first obvious answer is that they need the SOUL for their plan, so they can't have us fleeing from Hometown. But remember, Hometown is completely isolated from the rest of the world, and we've seen what happens when you traverse through the lake. You reach a blinding white light. I've been replaying Undertale and just recently reached the fight with Asgore at the barrier. And the barrier is a blinding white light. Given the WR themes of breaking the game, breaking the script, and seeing what's beyond the map, I'm comfortable assuming the white light Kris and Noelle cross in the WR is a barrier. Not to mention, you need a monster and a human SOUL to cross the barrier. They meet the requirements.

I think Hometown's completely surrounded by the barrier. Even if you could cross the police line, you would find the barrier. And this would probably be bad if the player found the barrier, or even tried to cross it. Carol and Kris need you. They can't have you knowing too much.

And on the point of Hometown being within the barrier and cut off from the outside world. We're constantly reminded that we'll see Asriel next week. Toriel wonders if they should go surprise him early at college. But I don't think they can. I don't think anyone can leave, and I don't think "next week" is supposed to come. I know timeloop theories and "there's nothing outside Hometown" theories aren't popular, and I understand why, but I really like someone's idea I saw (wish I could remember who so I could credit).

This person suggested Hometown got cut off from the outside world and trapped in this barrier at the exact moment the connection between the player and the SOUL was established, when Gaster launched his experiment. I do think they had lives before, and that there's a world out there. Remember how Alvin said he's been getting letters until recently?

In the Mantle game, there are several examples of imagery where you have to cut through trees to get somewhere or get something. And there are two mentions of getting lost that I think are interesting. The first, of course, is "lost where the forest would grow, the children followed the pointed tail. The poor children!" Another is from the ARG.

If you answered "the festival" to the question "Where will it take place?", you got this response:

"Well, it was always going to be this way.

The only people that walk this path...

... are those who have their face so close to the road

they can't even see where they're going!

...

But, well.

If we're lucky, maybe there's a chance you'll still get lost along the way..."

That's interesting to me. If you go to the festival, you're following the script. But if you go to the lake and enable the WR, you're not following the path. Getting lost.

Either, in the past, someone went through the trees and got somewhere they weren't supposed to, or we'll have to do it ourselves eventually.

Writing this theory kinda got away from me… I think all of this connected, somehow. Maybe I'm reaching, and it's all just regular video game blocking, but plenty of Deltarune's elements have been proven to be diagetic. And I think this would be cool.

Let's talk about "that day".

From what I can tell, there appears to be quite a few weird route references connected to that day. Paired with the fact that Noelle said December "left", not went missing, implies that she managed to go out of bounds just like Kris and Noelle do in the weird route. A few connections between Asriel and December imply Asriel believes that day was his fault.

If Kris was with December while she "left", and Kris wasn't able to make it, then Kris may have just drowned. After that though... I have no idea what happens. Somehow, I think Kris may have been taken to the sjelter.

What are your thoughts?

Pink's shopkeeper outfit is based on her concert kimono

It's definitely not the same outfit since she isn't wearing the bells in her shop sprites and she has something draped over her shoulders that isn't present in the concert outfit. However, she does have her hair tied up and is wearing a non-frilly outfit.

The Hometown Butcher is a menace for sure, but this guy is also very suspicious

I'm talking about the Scared Donut Guy. The one you can find near the takoyaki stand; he says that he spent all of his money on a dough ball. The most suspicious thing about him is not only that he, like the striped bird, has a goner version in Undertale, but also that he bought takoyaki for G. It's a well-known fact that that damn bird sells dough balls for G, a currency that doesn't exist in Deltarune. One might think that the Donut Guy was just mistaken, but he claims that he did have G. Where the hell did he get it from? Was he scummed or is there something fishy about him?
