salt water fishing

Hello, I am trying to buy saltwater fishing gear and bait for my boyfriend's birthday this year! I don't know much about fishing, but I know that he has fly fishing stuff, normal fishing stuff, and he wants to try more saltwater fishing in Washington. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Ocean salmon

Hello, planning a salmon fishing trip to the peninsula in 2027. I would really like to catch salmon in saltwater. I'm looking for advice on timing and location. Possibly looking to do a guided boat trip as well.

Anyone have anything to add?

Thanks all!

Pb walleye

Don’t target them much but it was a goal to get one this weekend especially after my buddy had caught a smaller one earlier in the day.
Tried a new spot on shore and wasn’t expecting this. No net, nowhere to land it so I jumped in, grabbed it by the tail and threw it up on the bank.
Shoutout to the little kid who held the pole for me. Him and his friends were freaking out with us

New gear test runs

Got a new rod for sockeye this year (rod on right) and a fish finder and practiced using sliding weights. Learned some lessons for next outing and did land a nice fat 13 inch trout but I forgot my net and he tangled up my other line and let him go since I have plenty of trout.

Manila clams from Quilcene Bay Tidelands not purging

I went to Quilcene Bay Tidelands and harvested a bunch of Manila clams. However, I have not been able to get them to purge since. I have been harvesting clams for many years and I have never had a similar issue with clams harvested from other beaches in the Puget Sound.

Last year, I harvested Manila clams from the same Quilcene Bay Tidelands beach and none of them purge. Back then, I thought perhaps they might have died during the journey back to Seattle as the bucket - with a portable aquarium pump aerating the sea water from the beach - was in the trunk of my wife's car, the first time we used her car for that purpose. But it's happening again so I don't think the clams were dead because I cooked one of them Saturday evening and the shells opened as one assume that would only happen to a live clam. The water temperature in the bucket is now almost 56 degrees and there is no evidence any of them have purged - each time I opened the lid to take a peek inside, I didn't see any siphon - because the water is still debris-free and clear.

Any idea what's going on?

Update:

Replacing the seawater with a 1/3 cup of salt per gallon of water mixture did the trick. Some of the clams started to purge soon after.

Evening solo fish

I snuck away from yard work to get out in this amazing calm weather for a few hours. I managed to hook this ~30” fish just before the evening tide change. I forgot my net, so I had to grab it in the water. It took a couple tries, he did not want to come aboard. I ended up making cioppino with clams/mussels I harvested, spot prawns from last weekends MA12 opener, and some scallops I purchased. I also made home made sourdough bread (my 14 year old son did the scoring).

Looking for out of towner advice for a trip with my father who lives locally

I live in the Denver area and my father lives in the Seattle area. I do a lot of hiking and backpacking for fishing and my dad says he would like to do a trip with me but he is in his early 70s now and has trouble at our home with altitude (8000ft) so my area is out of the question for him.

I plan to visit him end of June and to do something. Problem is I have no real familiarity with WA state since I was a kid and am trying to find shorter trails/more easily accessible small streams and lakes with trout that will be snow free by then.

Can anyone recommend certain areas or forests that have lots of road and trail systems and should be accessible and snow free by late June? He wants to backpack but I'm thinking 3-5 miles a day is reasonable for him depending on elevation gain but I am open to anywhere that offers any kind of camping that has fishing opportunities near roads.

Thanks for any advice that can be offered, this is likely the last time I will be able to do something like this with him and am trying to strike a balance between good fishing and easy access which is tough when I don't know the areas. Unfortunately the areas we used to fish when I was younger are not something that is safe for him to be scrambling around in anymore.

Memorial Day Weekend - Sturgeon

My husband and I are heading out to WA for Memorial Day weekend. He really wants to go Sturgeon fishing. Looks like most of the charters are out of Kalama, WA. We are flying into SEA TAC.

Would love any recommendations for charters closer to Seattle, but if Kalama is the best, then we can make the drive! TIA!

Dry Flies (light rig) near Baker Lake?

My girlfriend and I are heading up to camp around Baker Lake & Cacades NP in mid-late July from Colorado. Our setups are geared toward CO, and streamer fishing isn't something we particularly love. Assuming we're not picky about what fish to target, are there opportunities around the Baker Lake area out east toward Diablo to fish some dry flies/nymphs? Just a little research shows the fly fishing is very different from what we're used to, but we'd love to avoid getting totally different set ups just to catch fish (of any kind).

Thank you all much! WA is the best and we're grateful to be spending some time there.

Anyone fly fish fo carp in eastern washington?

I've been trying to catch carp on the fly at Lake roosevelt for the last few years while camping. going camping in a few weeks, still waiting to officially hook a carp on the fly. any pointers on what flies to use? the water level fluctuates at roosevelt. late may early June its relatively low. I tend to avoid cruising carp, they have no interest in the flies I toss. I try to look for carp, that have their tails near the surface, that look like they're feeding.

Too many choices.

As a relatively new fisherman I feel like a kid in a candy store.
The waters around here offer a lot of species (LMB, SMB, Rock Bass, Bluegill and various sunfish, yellow perch, trout, pikeminnow and Peamouth.

I also have a lot of lures of various sorts that have been promised to “slay” any and all of these fish.
The problem is working up the discipline to winnow down my gear to target just a single species like bass or sunfish or trout.
Something like a spinner claims to be effective on those three species yet I can fish for hours and not get anything and I begin to think i need to switch baits to one targeted for a single species. Then I wonder if I switched to a bait that is missing the species that is actually biting.
I go home skunked, wondering if I made the wrong choices and outsmarted myself.

I guess I need to just make the game into “Two lures, two locations “ and I either win that game or not.

Charter info?

Hi Yall a friend and my partner and I want to maybe try a charter for the first time. Are there any recommendations? What is is like? Do you bring your own gear and how far out do they usually go? (Never been on a boat super far out since I was little so I don’t know if I’ll be sick or scared or both lol)

Sorry UPDATE!! I live in Seattle and was looking for saltwater charters locally (although might consider heading down to Westport) I just don’t know what to expect price wise and what charters are good vs bad

Just honestly any tips or what it’s like based on your experience would be super helpful!

Thank you!!
