Reporting Poaching and illegal catches

I know of what I believe is a ring of people illegally taking our natural resources here in Washington State, yet the WDFW seems powerless. They remind me of the cops in the movies who don't show up until after the crime has already been committed.

I handed them what I thought was a huge case involving people illegally harvesting everything from crab to squid, geoduck, smelt, and who knows what other species, yet nothing seems to happen. No seizure of trucks, boats, or other assets. These people appear to be making massive amounts of untaxed cash by selling catches under the table.

WWJD? I pray that the Lord gives me the strength to not shoot them in the act.

I'm being serious because crab season is about to start, followed by squid and smelt season, and it feels like I’m about to watch the same thing happen all over again. Just seeing it turns my stomach.

Some of these individuals were caught and had their licenses suspended (only for 2 years), yet they bought different boats, put on different gear/masks, and went right back to it.

How do I know? Because one of them tried to sell me illegal catch a while back. I've also watched the same people year after year do it. My family gets our legal limit and leaves, while they're still out there long after everyone else has gone home.

I swear this state and its lax enforcement are going to destroy the natural resources we have if something doesn't change.

This year, when the endangered Eulachon smelt returned to the river and recreational fishing was limited to just a short opening, my parents told me they saw the people filling what looked like hundreds of pounds of smelt and loading two pickup trucks. Yet no one stopped them. Had I been there, I would have called 911 immediately. My parents don’t want confrontation. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Seriously, we need to protect our waters. In my opinion, that includes investigating commercial smelt operations around Camano Island. Last year I observed what appeared to be commercial smelt harvesting on weekends. I reported it but couldn't catch them in the act, and the activity seemed to stop afterward.

The smelt population around Camano Island appears to be declining. Smelt are an incredibly important species because they feed salmon, seals, sea lions, whales, sharks, and many other fish and marine animals. If catches aren't being properly reported and fish are being sold for cash outside the legal system, that hurts everyone. I've even been asked if I wanted to buy crab and other seafood from said commercial fisher. I don’t even know why the neighbors of Camano Island tolerate him netting on their property?!

Over the last five years, I've noticed fewer and fewer smelt returning to those beaches. They don't seem to flood the shoreline the way they used to. That's deeply concerning.

I also don't understand why such a large commercial harvest limit exists for smelt across Washington. 60k metric tons??? That’s a lot! These fish will continue to decline, so we need stronger conservation measures before they end up in the same situation as Eulachon Smelt.

Sorry for the rant, but this is something I'm passionate about. As a kid, my dad took me to these beautiful places to enjoy nature and everything our waters have to offer. If we don't protect these resources now, there won't be much left for future generations.

Also this is something I’ve been wanting to get off my chest. Hopefully the right authorities see this and do something. We all have a duty as well to report this.

Thank you everyone! Happy fishing!

Mobile license/Recording catch

Hello fellow legal hunter and gathers…

I’m still trying to navigate the Washington State’s wonky mobile license app… I can’t seem to figure out how to record my catches???

And wasn’t everything regarding fishing licenses suppose to go strictly mobile this year???

You see where it says add a catch??? I click there but it just loops me back to the main page? 2nd picture of this post. Thinking if I can’t figure it out I’ll just have to go Big 5 or Dicks and ask for a catch card.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Surely this is not the way - Lost Mandalorian trying to fish!

Algae growth

Caught what I think is a rainbow (edit: searun cutthroat) out of Isabella lake near shelton. Had an interesting coloring to it, but it washed off with water so I think it was an algae growth

Fly-Flishing Trout Spots Near Seattle?

Hi All,

I'm relatively new to the hobby - this is my second year in but taking it a bit more seriously this time around (haven't caught a fish yet). I've mostly been going up by SnowQualmie Middle Fork since it's so beautiful but I am starting to get interested in possibly catching something haha. I tried the Cedar once but had a hard time finding a good spot.

I know people are tight-lipped about their spots and I really want to respect that but would anyone be willing to throw me a spot or two that maybe is your second or third favorite spot you found blue-lining for example? Happy to chat in DM's if you like. Appreciate you all and have a good season :) cheers.

First time catching these on a fly rod

Went to Riffe Lake in Lewis County and caught a perch and a sunfish on a balanced leech. I was fishing for smallmouth so these were a nice surprise.

Catching Nothing on Lures

Me and my buddy have been going to Green Lake multiple times a week for the past 3 weeks, targeting trout. Mostly between 7-11 PM. We’ve tried Panther Martin spinners, Mepps, and Kastmaster spoons in multiple colors and sizes (1/16 - 1/4) with no luck. Does anyone have any advice for fishing lures in Green Lake? Are there any better spots nearby?

Rod setup:
- 15lb braid
- 2-3 ft 6lb fluoro leader tied to snap swivel
- medium action 6’6 rod

We want to catch something on lures, so please don’t suggest Powerbait. Thanks!

Just bought a 1994 trophy with a 2014 Suzuki 150. I have drain plug questions.

The boat is in great shape, and the engine purrs like a kitten. My concern is the drain plug. It is plastic, and was sitting in the transom well for the last 2 years. I am worried about UV damage to the plastic. The plug feels really solid, I can barely squeeze the plastic yet it still has a little give. The threads look good too. The plug is the only thing keeping me from plunking this thing in the water. I want the boat to be ready for the chinook opener in the San Juans on July 16th. Questions. Could I safely use the old plug short term? If not, where the hell can I find a replacement? I haven't been able to find one that matches in any marine store in my area (Anacortes WA....it is possible I am overlooking some), or online. I would really appreciate any advice or recommendations.

Toledo WA For Fishing:

Hey y’all just got back from a trip with my husband and his friends and I just wanted to rave about the Airbnb and area we stayed in
We’ve never fished in Washington before it’s our first time in this state. We’re all from Idaho so we are pretty blessed where we are at when it comes to fishin but his friend booked this place on short notice and it was fantastic! The area was beautiful (delicious Mexican spot down the road which was random) the Airbnb was perfect for us, and the weather was great! Would definitely love more recommendations for fishing spots in Washington!
Hope y’all are able to go out to check this place out

Westport beach kings

Looking to head out to Westport for salmon and I was hoping to get some tips for fishing the beach kings. I usually run out to 300FOW but would like to have options if things are a bit rough. So I am wondering how far out is considered fishing the beach kings are we talking just outside the bar or more like 100-150FOW. and do you have to get your gear on the bottom or do you fish it like the deeper water where your gears mid water column. Thanks for any help photo from last season as a fish tax.

I’ve never used Braided Line…

I was reading that it should be on a mono backing to avoid slipping and wound on the reel VERY tight. I’m putting 65 lb on an Ambassadeur 6501-C3 for Crab snaring off a pier in 8-2 next week.
Any advisories are welcome. We’ve all had our first times! 😆

Thanks!

Pier gear

I was at the pier the other day just watching and noticed each of the three or so guys had the same pyramidal weight and bait tied on. I wouldnt know the first thing about fishing off a random pier. How do yall figure it out without buying the whole aisle of gear, like leader length, lead weight, leader height above weight, hook size…
