Gramercy Park Sour
For the competition this month I decided to do a New York sour riff which I named after an area of New York City called Gramercy Park which is one of the few areas to have a private park
Recipe
2oz dry gin, I used Plymouth
1/2oz lemon juice
1/2oz chamomile honey syrup (see below for recipe details)
1/4oz amaro Nonino
1tsp of lemon syrup.
1oz of rose wine
Sprig of mint
In a shaker add the gin, lemon juice, chamomile honey syrup, and lemon syrup and shake with ice until well chilled. Strain into an old fashioned glass over ice , top with rose wine and garnish with a mint sprig
*for the chamomile honey syrup- make a one to one honey syrup while taking one and half tablespoons to three tablespoons of chamomile tea (I used loose leaf so I don’t know how many bags of tea it would take) and chamomile tea. Combine both together and store it. The honey I used was a sugar free alternative which tastes great.
For the lemon syrup, I bought it from Portland syrups company.
Overall this has a really nice summer feel that taste like a boozy lemonade. The rose adds a nice fruity dry element to the drink to help balance the sweetness.
Gin anti-recommendations
I am building my gin collection and am looking for recommendations of what not to buy. Specifically I’m looking for gins that do not have anise in them as it always tastes so pronounced to me. I tend to drink my gin straight so attempting to dilute the anise flavor with other mixers doesn’t work in my case.
Reading this sub made me realize that a gin I really wanted to try, Drumshambo Gunpowder Irish Gin blue bottle, has anise flavor in it. So disappointed! What gins have an anise flavor profile that I should avoid?
Is Drinking Gin on the Fourth of July Anti-American?
reddit.comAnother store run and had to pick up the No 3 dry this time was on sale.
Cheers
Scapegrace gin and tonic garnished with grapefruit and some videogames.
Cucumber Mint Gimlet
1/4 cucumber, peeled and thinly sliced
8-10 large mint leaves
2 oz gin, preferably Hendrick’s
1 oz lime juice
1 oz simple syrup
Club soda
Place cucumber and mint in glass, with a lot of ice. Pour in gin, lime and syrup. Top with club soda. Stir.
You can sub in basil for mint, or lemon for lime. It's too hot to leave the house.
Procera Blue Dot
Wandering Total Wines & More (and hoping to spy a Monkey47 Sloe Gin), I was surprised to see several Procera Blue Dots on the shelf.
Do I pull the trigger for a C-note? Why not; it’s been on the “must try” list long enough. And while I was hoping for revelatory, alas the heavens did not open up and there was no celestial angel choir.
A bit hotter than I expected, it is forward with anise notes and has the pink peppercorn finish I was told to expect. If I concentrate, I can detect some faint citrus.
I think a third of the expense is in the showy bottle. It will probably be relegated to martinis as this was not the sipping gin I was hoping for.
Blown away by the Gunpowder Gin fig and laurel flanker
I was getting kind of tired of my normal go to (botanist) and decided to try a few different things. I got the Irish fig and laurel gunpowder gin on sale for $30 because I like the original and wow! It is fresh and fruity just smells and tastes amazing. Good for that sort of gin and tonic, I’ve been reaching for it over the monkey daily (I’m honestly not really impressed with this recent bottle of monkey 47 I got compared to other bottles of it in recent years). Definitely give this one a try I see it on sale a lot!
Made my first G&T today. Sublime!
Broker's, Fever Tree Light Tonic Water, Lime, Cucumber. Had three of these beauties with a pretty unhealthy amount of cocktail peanuts while watching the World Cup today. Found it a bit hard to rise from the couch after. Fantastic!
Roku gin
It was fine. Very light and delicate. Felt almost like it was missing something.
Recommendations for expanding my home bar
Hi! I am very fond of mixing cocktails and have pretty nice home bar, but I gins are what I reach for when I want to make something only for myself and not for the entertainment of others.
This is my current gin collection. Aside from that kind of evil rhubard and ginger gin in purple bottle I very much like these all and have tasted some variety of other gins while visiting bars etc. Beefeater is my mixing workhorse and havw used plenty of Gibson's too, though I have none pictured right now. Newest one is Bombay sunset my husband gifted me just today.
I especially enjoy super floral (i adore Flora Adora, unlike most people here) or junipery gins, but am open for any kind of recommendations. Help a girl out!
I made my first dirty martini. Broker's, Dolin's, Spanish Queen Brine & Olive
New here and new to gin. I don't think gin will ever replace scotch in my affections or that a martini will knock a Paper Plane off my cocktail list but this was really good. I am eager to continue exploring the world of gin. I have gleaned a lot of info from this sub in the last couple of weeks, so thanks to you all!
Which gin competitions are actually worth entering?
Are there any contests/competitions that are worth it for a new, premium gin to enter?
We recently launched HENWILL Gin, a premium California London Dry made with wild, hand-foraged California juniper.
Looking at entering competitions, but there are so many that it's hard to know which ones actually matter. I'd love to hear which awards you've found valuable (or not) for building credibility and growing a brand.
From a conservative Muslim family to my first bottle of gin need guidance.
Hey everyone,
I'm 21, and this is probably a weird post, but I genuinely need some advice.
I grew up in a very conservative Muslim family, so I've never had alcohol before. Recently, I bought a bottle of Murree Brewery London Dry Gin, and now it's just sitting on my shelf because I honestly have no idea what I'm doing.
I love listening to music, and I thought it might be nice to have a relaxing evening with some good songs and see what the experience is like. I'm not trying to get blackout drunk or do anything reckless, I just want to learn and have a safe first experience.
I'd really appreciate some brotherly advice from people with experience:
How much should a complete beginner drink for the first time?
What's a good quantity to start with without overdoing it?
Should I drink it straight or mix it?
What are some super easy gin cocktails I can make with common ingredients?
Any tips for making the experience enjoyable without feeling sick or ruining the night?
And what do you wish someone had told you before your first drink?
Please don't judge me. I'm genuinely clueless and would rather learn from people who've been through it than make beginner mistakes.
Thanks in advance, brothers. 🍻🎧
