Savasana

So this is a bit of a rant, but the teacher of the yoga class I just took completely skipped Savasana. She basically said “I consider Savasana too hard, so I’m going to skip it, class is over but if you want to do it you can”. 😳. What??. I’m pretty sure it’s common knowledge that Savasana is the most important pose. Also, not to put anyone down, but I really don’t struggle to lie on my back for 3 minutes after a difficult class. In fact, it feels good, and I could lie on my back for the whole class. I can’t help but feel like we’re cooked as a society if we can’t relax for 3 whole minutes. Also, it makes me feel sad that yoga can get so ripped from its spiritual roots. It’s a mind and body practice, not just a workout. Also, this was at a reputable studio in my city.

Leggings for guys?

How do people feel about seeing guys in leggings in a yoga class? I feel it works better at managing sweat vs baggy shorts. You could have fun with different colors/patterns etc if you want. Should guys cover up their family jewels so the outline or VPL isn't too obvious?

Newly Graduated Yoga Teacher!

Hi there! I recently graduated from my 200hr program and feeling confused and stuck.
I have LOVED yoga for years. I love that it helps me get out of my head and really into my body, challenge myself with poses that make me feel incredibly strong, being able to work towards different poses that I never thought I could get into, it helps calm my nervous system and make me feel relaxed.
I’ve taught fitness classes as well, so I thought this was the perfect opportunity to put my two loves together, teaching and yoga. However, after going through the training, I’m feeling a bit defeated and lost(?)

It feels like my cohort all connected so well as a group and I’m an outsider of it. They’re all very vulnerable and discuss how beautiful this experience has been, I haven’t felt that at all.
I thought the subject matter was cool and I was very interested in it, but people were discussing borderline spiritual experiences and I feel like I’m missing something.
It makes me wonder if I just don’t….”get” yoga. Maybe I shouldn’t teach it?
Has anyone else felt this way? Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts!

After beginning your yoga practice how long did it take you to “fly” aka doing crow and arm balances?

I’ve gotten into vinayasa yoga pretty seriously in the last 5-6 months. I am a member of a great studio and I’ve learned a ton. Lately, the studio has been focused on arm balances and crow, side crow, flying pigeon, headstands, etc. I practice headstands and crow regularly. And I am getting somewhere! I’m able to hold crow for a few breaths and I can do a headstand against the wall/hold it without using the wall - only using wall as emotional support lol. But I can’t help but feel that I’m so much worse than others in my class.

How long did it take you to learn to do these arm balances? Also additional poses we are taught include lifting up your body/scrunching everything up and lifting with pelvic floor and abs and it feels nearly impossible to do! My lower body feels incredibly heavy to be so nimble and to be able to squeeze and lift it…

Is there a way to improve arm balances and strength? Perhaps I should focus on upper body weight lifting and strength training? My upper body has only become more toned and stronger since starting vinaysa. Normally I only focus on lower body. Is becoming stronger/weight training the ultimate trick with arm balances and “flying” in yoga?

For practitioners and teachers

What is the concensus on strict Bikram dialogue vs adapted body based teaching (still very dialogue based just not word for word?)

Background I started doing Bikram yoga 15 years ago. When there were really only strict Bikram studios. Now we know things have changed….. but I recently started teaching and I’m curious what students/other teachers like. I am not Bikram trained but my training does mimic Bikram very closely. I work at a studio where the teachers are very experienced and teach more from a body knowledge place combined with dialogue. As im a new teacher but also rooted in traditional Bikram practice im torn on how to teach. I love both styles. Just curious what we think about the evolution of the practice.

Thanks for the input!

Presence

How do some people seem so calm and never in a rush, as though they almost exist in some kind of unrushed presence? Is there like a meditation for that?

Migraine cure?

I suffer from cluster migraines, where I have 3-4 days of constant headache and nausea. I used to just stay in bed to try and sleep through the worst of it in the morning, but I decided not to skip a day of yoga. As soon as I walk into the hot studio, the pain subsides. When the exercising starts, I don’t even think about it anymore. This has been true for my last 5 bouts of clusters. Anyone else find this to be true? Is it the heat, is it “in my head”?

What are the benefits of Bikram yoga?

Yesterday I did my first Bikram yoga class and I thought it was quite interesting. I prefer hot vinyasa more because I tend to feel like I’ve gotten more of a “workout” in. I’m curious, what are the benefits of Bikram yoga? What kind of results do you see after consistently doing it? Does Bikram help tone the body?

Guy next to me sweating all over my mat…

How would you handle this situation? I’ve been doing hot yoga for about a year now, and I’ve never had this happen. The guy next to me literally sweated puddles, and it wound up getting on my mat and into my space. I actually had to get up in the middle of the flow to wipe some of his sweat away, but he of course never stopped his flow to wipe the sweat, even when it was obvious that it was getting on me and my (open cell) mat. When he left he didn’t even wipe out all the puddle. He just said “sorry about the sweat” and left. I didn’t say anything at the time, but how would you have addressed this? It’s hot yoga. People sweat. But I’ve never had someone literally disrespect my personal space like this

Yoga Club on Strava

Hi fellow yogis, I started my hot yoga journey 2 years ago off of a trial & haven’t stopped since - it changed my life!

My friend is a runner so for her birthday, she organized a 5K run & she made me download Strava.

Ever since then, I didn’t realize my watch was synced to Strava & it started tracking my yoga classes too. I thought Strava was just for the running & cycling community, but I guess they’ve expanded their activity categories.

I am NOT a runner, I do hot yoga classes 3-4 times a week so I am very new to that app.

I checked to see if there were any yoga clubs on Strava but none that I saw stuck out. I do like the idea of a social network for people that would like a yoga community &/or accountability in the app.

Now my question is…. would anyone be interested in a yoga club on there or would that be lame? Also, I’m open to hearing anyone’s thoughts on Strava too!

Yoga girlies- need a recommendation

Hello girls 😄

I've recently got into hot yoga partially thanks to this sub reddit and have been loving the endorphins it gives me after each session. However, I'm now having two issues that I need some help with:

  1. my skin doesn't really like the sweat. On my chest I'm getting a lot of clogged pores and my face is getting more breakouts. The studio I go to has showers but I have a thing against public showers so I don't get home to shower for probably almost an hour. Any tips?

  2. I really love lulu aligns - they're the only leggings I've tried that make me feel not too hot and they're super soft. But, they give me really bad cameltoe (lol) and during a yoga class, the poses can really emphasize this issue (lol). any tips or leggings that don't cause this? I've tried wearing loose shorts but I personally like wearing long pants otherwise things just get slippery hahah

Thank you!!

Bad Music During Hot Yoga

At risk of coming off a little uptight, I had my first negative hot yoga experience yesterday. I went to an earlier class than the one I usually go to yesterday and a Russian woman was substituting. I’ll say right off the bat that I’m a fan of 80’s music, but right when we started, she played really upbeat 80’s music loudly to the point where I could barely hear her. I had to keep looking up during the class to see when we were out of the posture because I couldn’t hear. Then different types of DISCO music started playing. Eastern European disco music too! Then I thought I heard someone’s phone go off at full volume; not ringing but it sounded like someone was watching an Instagram reel or something at full volume. Then I realized it was a clip of someone talking that was a part of the song. I’ll never take for granted the fact that the other instructors play more chill music. This is the only yoga studio I’ve gone to and the vibe might be different elsewhere but it was weird for the studio that I go to.

Imagine being perfectly relaxed in shavasana and hearing this! I’ve had this shit song stuck in my head since yesterday! https://youtu.be/LQivCtW0Juo?si=Rw6Yxvpqfu4VLrVN

Is YogaSix Power Flow beginner friendly?

I’m looking at classes to take in the next few days that fit in my schedule, and it seems like most are Y6 Power Flows. Are these ones beginner friendly? I’ve taken restore, slow flow, sculpt & flow, and mobility only, so I’m pretty nervous about power flow. I struggle still with pretty much all except restore because I’m new, but I’m able to do things with modifications and breaks.

Practicing after being sick

I have been practicing hot yoga multiple nights a week for about a year now. I had a cold last week and now have bronchitis. I’m wondering how long y’all normally take a break from practicing after being sick? Or if you’ve had bronchitis, at what point did you go back? The dr said the cough could last up to 6 weeks….

I feel fine besides the lingering, annoying cough and have my inhaler but I also don’t want to disturb anyone else’s practice.
