Couple of questions about money/immigration process for those who have immigrated

Hey again, we're moving next month and getting excited (and stressed!).

There's 3 Aussies and me. I've applied for the partner visa and just waiting it out for over a year now. I've called the Home Affairs and have been told that it's not a problem to come while waiting for the approval and that i'll get a bridging visa for my tourist visa which will allow me to stay.

My question is, when you immigrated, did you have to show a certain amount in the bank account? Was it a formal letter from the bank?

I'm assuming that there's no hard number but more of a 'can you support yourself while waiting for approval?'

If my SO is Aussie, does that then mean we can simply be a single income family while I wait and there's no amount needed ?

We have family that will be meeting us and picking us up at the airport. how long can i expect to be at customs/immigration for so that I can tell the family what time to come. I'm thinking it could easily a couple of hours

I hope that's the last of the moving questions. Thanks

AMA: I’m a QLD electrician — ask me about EVs, home charging, switchboards & electrical safety [10:30am AEST 18/08]

Hi r/AustralianEV!

I’m John Ricca from Jaric Air Conditioning and Electrical, a licensed electrical and air conditioning company based in South East Queensland. We install home EV chargers and help customers work out what their car, home and switchboard actually need before they buy.

We’re hosting an AMA on Tuesday 18 August at 10:30am AEST, where I’ll be here to answer your questions about:

  • Choosing the right home EV charger: 7kW vs 11kW vs 22kW
  • Switchboards, safety checks and whether your home is EV-ready
  • Solar charging, off-peak tariffs and the cheapest way to charge at home
  • Electrical safety
  • General electrical questions
  • Anything else you’ve been wondering about

We’re happy to answer both basic and technical questions — from “do I really need a wall charger?” through to switchboard capacity, solar charging, tariffs and QLD installation requirements.

This isn’t a sales pitch. We’re here to share practical electrical advice and help clear up some of the confusion around home EV charging. For anything specific to your own property, a licensed electrician would still need to inspect it properly.

Drop your questions below ahead of time and we’ll start answering them when the AMA begins at 10:30am.

Looking forward to chatting with you all.

Must have security precautions?

Hi Everyone
I am moving to Brisbane from another country with my family.

We will be living in Coorparoo. As we are looking for every kind of information on the internet to easily adjust at this new place, day care for kids, commute, culture etc.

One thing we found that there are few break in cases as well. In comments mostly local called them kids. In one incident guy had a knife in hand as well.

So, i really appreciate if people who are from Brisbane help me understand how common is this and for safety what are the precautions or messages we must have for us.
Cameras, security Alarms, movement detection lights or what are the common and most effective things people do in Brisbane.

Thanks

Desperately searching for a rental in Hamilton, Brisbane... Any advice or leads?

Hi everyone,

I'm in a bit of a tough spot and hoping someone here might be able to help or point me in the right direction.

I'm a woman in my late twenties, single, working full-time in the city. I'm currently living in a two-bedroom apartment with a roommate, but my lease is ending soon and I'm hoping to move into a one-bedroom on my own.I've been searching for few weeks with no luck, and it's been crushing me. The rental market here has been really competitive and it's starting to feel overwhelming.

I've genuinely come to love the Hamilton area and would really love to stay in this neighbourhood if at all possible.

A bit about me as a tenant:

  • No pets, non-smoker, no parties
  • Full-time, stable income
  • I take real pride in keeping wherever I live clean and well maintained. I promise to treat any place like it's my own

If anyone knows of a rental coming up in Hamilton (or nearby), or has any tips on how to stand out in this market, I would really appreciate it. Feeling pretty stressed about this and just trying to find some direction. Thank you in advance 🙏

How safe is this Annerley pocket for families?

Heard not so great things about Ipswich road, but this area closer to fairfield, is it generally safe for kids / going home from work at night?

Toowong, Annerley, or Indooropilly for a student

Can anyone comment on the pros and cons of these suburbs for living as a student?

Personally, I want to prioritize easy commute to UQ and accesibility to parks and grocery stores. Ideally I wouldn't go over 500 per week for rent.

Also in terms of security and safety, is annerley actually that bad? Are there particular streets to avoid?

Moving to Wynnum West

I’ll be moving to Wynnum West at the end of this year, to a place near New Lindum Rd just off Wynnum Rd.

Just wondering if any locals from that area had any advice/tips/local knowledge that would be helpful?

Thanks!🙏

Best economical car rental and estimated 1 month rent?

Hi Everyone
I am moving to Brisbane next month. Planning to get a car on rent for first month.

I checked Eastcoast car rental and Europcar but there is a very big difference in price. Europ car showing almost 3,500 AUD for a month and Eastcoast showing 680 for a month.

Any one who use car rental in Brisbane please share from where I should get a car for a month and what the estimated budget I should keep in mind. I am ok with any good car not super luxury or high end. Any sedan or good hatchback work for me.

Appreciate your help 😊

Help with choosing high school

Moved to the centenary suburbs last year and missed the initial QASMT entrance exam for year 7 intake. 11 year old who is good and interested in maths and science (as is in other subjects - just a curious mind) gave the second exam for late entrants and was put on the merit pool. Was devastated as he thought he had cracked it and several of his friends are going there.

Got placed in English/Humanities in Corinda state high. Finds HASS very interesting in school.

Also got a confirmation from Centenary state high school for the Maths and Science excellence program. CSHS is also the catchment high school.

I would appreciate any guidance that could help us have a discussion with him about what he wants to choose out of Corinda or Centenary. Not having grown up in Australia we have zero insight into schools that could help shape his future for the better. Thanks for your help

Tips for first few weeks in Brisbane

Hi Everyone
I am moving to Brisbane in a month with my husband and a kid. We are moving here permanently.

It’s the first time we will be in Australia. I want you guys who are already living there to help me out giving any tips you can give to anyone which can help new comers to adjust easily and help in settling down. It could be anything.

Like which sim , bank, home internet, way of greeting, what people like, what to avoid, what is something someone should never do, anything about culture etc.

It would be super helpful for me.
Thanks

just moved to brisbane, what do you use to get pet food fast when you're in a pinch?

still figuring out my way around and half my cat's stuff is somewhere in like 15 unlabeled boxes. she's extra needy about her food schedule so digging through everything tonight isn't really an option, and I don't want to drive around guessing which stores are still open

anyone know a good way to get pet supplies same day when you've just moved and don't know the area yet?

Hi everyone. My family is looking at moving to Bardon and we’re considering a property backing onto a creek. We’d love any local insight on flooding, mosquitoes and creek maintenance. Any local knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Advice for finding and securing rental in Brisbane

Hi, my husband is living in Brisbane (Northside) and really struggling to find a two bed rental. Every inspection has tons of people and then on application it's unsuccessful without reason. Often the flats come on market with just a week or so before they are ready to rent so zero time to give notice for other rental or to get.tkme off work..any advice how others have secured a letting ? Looking to spend less than $700 per week.. thanks!
