I saw this at my first visit to Lake crab tree in Raleigh North Carolina.
It was 7:30 pm, and this was right at the shore, of the lake beach side.
Luckily we saw it at distance and called our kids out.
Both my kids were playing right there.
Was it the copperhead and is it a rare sighting or expected?
How dangerous could it have been had the kids were still there?
Crowders Trail to Rocktop Trail Loop on AllTrails

Hey everybody,
Me and my friends plan on branching out from backpacking in uwharrie to now the Appalachian wilderness, we planned on taking this loop starting at the Black Balsam Knob trail then following the Art Loeb trail north toward camp Daniel Boone. Once at the camp then follow the Little East Fork Trail south, connecting with the Ivestor Gap Trail. Then following the Ivestor Gap back to the parking lot.
Just wondering yalls thoughts on this loop, and also what should we expect for finding water. Wed go mid July
Thanks
Looking to trial run camping with my dog. I know it's the 4th, but anyone have any suggestions for this weekend? Ideally not super packed but I'm fine with it being "full." I'm experienced camping and backpacking (primitive and non primitive) but never with a dog. I'm also new to NC so in need of suggestions.
TIA
Hi! I’m quite new to hiking/backpacking/etc. but just finished the Camino de Santiago Portuguese route and trying to get more into it.
I’ll be in Asheville/Brevard for a bachelorette trip this weekend (4th of July). I’m staying an extra day to hopefully go for a hike near Brevard. I’ll have a rental car but would prefer between Brevard/Asheville. Ideally a 4-6ish mile loop that’s well marked and moderately strenuous. I’ll be solo so I’m a little nervous with navigating on my own🥹
Any recommendations would be great. I’ve been looking at AllTrails but I can’t really settle on the best one.
This sweet boy with heterochromatic eyes immediately curled at my feet. We met his owner under a shady tree on the MST and he allowed me to take some photos.
Kitty gets lots of breaks, food, and water and is carried most of the time. He was rescued from a woman who had 15 cats and ten dogs. I know it’s atypical, but it really seemed like he was living his best life.
Last pic is the GPS track! 34.2 miles of backpacking over three days, with close to 10000 feet of elevation gain.
Route is Big Butt Trail > Mountain to Sea Trail > Black Mountain Crest Trail — this should be the AllTrails link to the route: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/north-carolina/big-butt-peak-cattail-peak-mount-mitchell-and-gibbs-mountain?sh=qybnju&utm\_medium=trail\_share&utm\_source=alltrails\_virality
Heck of a hike, it was chilly when we did it. But super fun and quiet trail from Big Butt Trailhead to Commissary Hill.
I’ve been wanting to do bigger trips like this for a while, and wanted to get the “Death March” under my belt. Did comparable hikes like Art Loeb last October, and Grand Canyon (I know not NC LOL) South Kaibab > Campground > Up Bright Angel. Planning to do Virginia Triple Crown at some point. Kilimanjaro in August :D
Question: any backpacking groups in the Raleigh area? Or any info on groups I can join to go backpacking and meet friends??
Hey!
I know this is a little last minute but I was wondering if there was anyone who would be able to shuttle me and a friend from Mountain Harbor Bed and Breakfast to Carvers Gap. We were gonna have two cars but my friend's car broke down yesterday so we're in a bit of a bind. Friday around 11am would be preferred but we can be flexible. We don't really know any shuttlers in the area so any information would be greatly appreciated. We can pay in cash.
Thanks!
I've hiked the Black Mountain Crest Trail and summited a few of the Sixers along the way to Mt Mitchell. I'm not really a peak bagger but the list is good inspiration to explore maps. Is the BMCT about as good as it gets in NC? How about the Great Balsam and the Plott Balsams? I've never been over there.
I’m running out of spots for this late in the summer when it’s just too hot to responsibly fish anywhere but the highest elevations. I’m willing to hike.
For the past few weeks I’ve been going to a 5000-5800ft creek in shining rock to fish for brook trout, and before that some 4000ft headwaters in jackson county, but I’d like to stop terrorizing the natives now that it’s getting proper warm.
Tailwaters are enticing, and I love fishing that section of the nantahala gorge (last weekend it was crazy, you could see them rising to eat every couple of seconds), but I don’t think there’s sites unless im missing something. It’s my impression the sites off of Old River Road for example are not part of that tailwater/dam system. Please correct me if im wrong, and I’d love to hear about more of these sorts of spots (nantahala seems to have tons of roadside dispersed that I haven’t found yet) but I more than understand the secrecy.
Standing indian is also enticing, but I’d prefer not to camp in a developed campground. Is big east fork in shining rock high enough in elevation? Tanasee creek?
Thanks
I’m a beginner hiker and I want to get out and explore some of North Carolina starting with Pisgah National Forest cause some of the trails seem awesome and beginner friendly. I’m a bit worried about the snakes though, since I’m unfamiliar with that part of the state and I’m scared I’ll step on one during a hike. Anyone frequent these areas and can say how frequent snake encounters usually are in the summer? Or any tips to avoid the snakes in general? I’m mostly so worried because I plan to do some of these hikes by myself.
Hey I’m from hickory nc and love backpacking but don’t know of any amazing spots. Would love some recommendations. Anywhere in nc preferably mountains. Also looking for a good spot in Shenandoah or great Smokey mountains. Thank you!
To cap off my stay in Southern Pines last year I visited the Reservoir Park again and noticed along the trail a kayak rental kiosk. Got an evening hike and sunset paddle!
On the morning of my second day in Southern Pines last year I took a walk around the grounds of the Sandhills Horticultural Center, adjacent to the community college. It is awesome to me when I find places like this that are open to the public!
