Helping with cutting and transplanting

A few years ago, I posted the following about one of my cacti not looking so hot. (this is the post)

Someone recommended I "cut the bottom part and keep the top part. Put crushed charcoal or cinnamon on the cut part to avoid fungal attacks, and wait several months for roots to appear before putting it in the ground."

I am trying to get more information on this. Is crushed charcoal something I should buy or is it literally crushed charcoal? While I am waiting several months for the roots, how should I be storing the cacti? On top of substrate? On a paper towel?

Just trying to get some clarity on this process. Thanks!

Mt LeConte Parking Question.

Heading up to Mt Leconte this Friday (Yeah Me!). I have my parking pass and was planning to park at Alum Cave parking lot with Rainbow Falls as a backup. Our goal is to be at the lot around 10:00 to 10:30. The weather that day doesn't look great.

Anyone have any intel if the lots will be full at that time.

What was the name of...

The restaurant that was in the building where the Franklin St Target is now. It was on the backside beside Ken's Kwike Mart. Around in the 80s and early 90s. Sold sandwiches and salads.

Bonus points for the name of the store selling gifts that was across the walkway.

EDIT: Thanks everyone. The answer is Looking Glass Cafe (not to be confused with the coffee shop that was in Carrboro where Lanza's is now). Swensen was on the front side of the building (as was Timeout). The gift store was T’Boli.

Overnight parking near Brown Mountain Beach Road and/or Table Rock Rd?

Planning to do some overnight bikepacking up around Wilson Creek. Looking for a place to park two nights around Brown Mountain Beach Road anywhere between the Visitors Center and Adako Rd. I have parked at the entrance to OHV Trail System before and ridden down the road but looking for something closer. Any suggestions?

If not there, how about near where Table Rock Road mets up with Simpson Creek at 181?

How will this end up?

20 Days ago we bought a 2016 Subaru Forrester Touring. Didn't buy MaxCare. The car buying experience was excellent. We were excited.

2 days ago the transmission went leaving us on the side of the road. We are still in the 30 days for major mechanicals. Today Carmax towed it to their shop to look over. What can we expect from Carmax at this point?

If they install a new transmission will it be a rebuilt one? New?

Might they declare it 'totaled'?

Just trying to get a read on what's next

Dining along I-40: Burlington to Morganton

My teen and I are heading up to the Lake James area this weekend. Looking for recommendations on somewhere to get dinner on the way there. Here is my criteria:

  • Dinner time will be anywhere between Greensboro and Morganton.
  • Would like to pick something up as we are trying to make some time.
  • Don't want to drive far off I-40
  • Trying not to have pizza

What is your go to?

For you literary weirdos, here is what Joan Didion had to say about hanging with the Dead in '67

Reads like they were deep into the extra curriculars when she visited
