Please help me find a needlepointing item for my mom
My mom (70) has been needlepointing since she was 15. She just moved and doesn’t have a needlepoint shop nearby (which was how she used to get all of her stuff). Where would I buy the wood framed item that’s holding her canvas? What is it called? I’m not sure. I know nothing about this and need help. Thank you all!
Thimbles? Leather Thimbles?
I am hitting a wall here. I have a frustrating callus on the pad of my middle finger from pushing needles through canvases for 20+ years that frequently splits (I have no idea how else to describe this, sorry!) right down the middle and exposes much more sensitive skin. This makes it very uncomfortable to stitch and I'm struggling with how best to deal with it. I currently use either these leather thimble pads or I wrap a fabric bandaid around my finger when this happens and I'm not a huge fan of either option, so I am coming to y'all in the hopes that someone here has a better solution.
I have tried silicone and traditional metal thimbles, but these are not great because I have medium-to-long-ish nails and I hate the fact that I can no longer feel the canvas/thread as I'm using it. The leather thimble pads are just okay - they're thick, so they do protect my finger, but again, I lose some sensation and for some reason, I always feel like the one I'm wearing (even when it's a brand new one) is about to peel off. Bandaids leave adhesive residue on my skin and nail, plus they take a while to dry if I wash my hands, and I don't want my threads and canvas getting wet.
I've been looking at this thimble tape, but am worried about adhesive residue on my finger and the potential for residue to be left on my canvas/thread. What are y'all using if you have a similar issue? Please tell me someone has a solution! Thank you in advance :)
Finisher recs??
My first big project! Stocking for my soon to be born niece, featuring their family dog! By no means is it perfect—I tore velvet out of 100 places and wish I had found better colors—but it will do! I put so much pressure on because i want it to be an heirloom piece, so I stuck with DMC cotton for washability and sturdiness.
Any recs for finishing?? I’ve been scoping out Rittenhouse but would love any thoughts, as I’ve only done self finishing to date!
Trying to track down my great-grandmother's needlepoint pattern: Hiawatha Heirloom rose bouquet (Preworked "Super Canvas")
Hi all! I'm hoping this community can help me with a little family detective project.
My great-grandmother stitched this rose bouquet back in the 1970s, in Baltimore, MD. I've recently fallen in love with it and would love to find the original canvas — partly out of curiosity, and partly because I'd love to attempt it myself someday and feel a little connected to her while I do.
I've gotten as far as speculating the brand: it appears to be a Hiawatha Heirloom "Lady Handicraft" preworked needlepoint, English-made, with "SUPER CANVAS" printed along the canvas margin (you can see it in one of my photos). It's that classic preworked style, the rose bouquet center came pre-stitched in fine petit point, and it seems that she filled in the deep wine-colored background herself by hand.
The bouquet is a soft mix of pink-to-burgundy roses, a little dark red and peach, dusty greens, with tiny goldenrod accents. I know Hiawatha made a whole series of these floral centers, each with its own design number (I've found No. 257/3, but that's a different bouquet than hers).
Does anyone happen to recognize this particular one, or have an old Hiawatha catalog or tag that might point me to the design number? I know it's a long shot after all these years, but even a number to search by would mean a lot!
Handling a large canvas
I picked up one of the Jonathan Adler kits from Michael's -- a large wall hanging -- and I was having the worst time trying to get my hands and arms around it. It's very flexible, but I'm always worried about damaging things. This isn't traditional woven canvas, but a very flexible polymer/plasticy sort of fiber and I'm not sure how tearable it is.
Anyway, I think I figured it out, but as I'm a fairly new stitcher, I'd welcome all ideas to make stitching in hand easier.
This is my current work-around. I've rolled up the sides I'm not stitching and clipped them top and bottom with hair clips.
I'm using it as sort of a sampler and trying different stitches on different colors and sections.
plastic canvas needlepoint bag, just got it and I hate the handles. How do I replace them without damaging the bag?
A family friends mom died and her house was full of this stuff- literal trash bags full. I picked out this bag because it was cute, but I really dislike the handles.
It’s just the yarn wrapped around the handle to secure it to the bag, but it’s TIGHT. I wanted to just snap the handles and pull them out and slide a new handle in, but again- it’s so tight that I literally can’t do that.
How do I replace them? I don’t want to mess with that threading but I might have to.
Tacks vs staples
Hi all! I am a stretcher bar stitcher through and through, I have tried both and just prefer the consistency the bars give me. With that in mind I recently stopped at the Nimble Needle and saw them securing a canvas with a stapler; so I tried it myself and love it, I feel like I am able to get a more even stretch and tension this way.
Just wanted to check if there are any concerns using staples instead of tacks or is it strictly preference? Also will it cause me to go through stretcher bars quicker, I use the thicker ones not the thin?
Nabavian
Has anyone been to this store in NYC?
Do they usually have good stock?
What next?
My mother recently found this pre-worked vintage needlepoint in her stash (she must have bought it this way as needlepoint is one of the few types of needlework she doesn't do), and handed it to me. "Hey, you want to finish this for me, right?"
My first thought was, "I thought you liked me."
My second was, "What do I do with this?"
As a relatively new needlepointer, I have questions.
Is it done? I mean, it doesn't feel like it because it's not all filled in.
It's on Penelope canvas, which I haven't really worked with, and from my quick trip through eBay, it seems like it was meant to be a seat cover or something quite sturdy.
It doesn't seem to be in... petit point? Is that the word? Where you use the little holes in the double canvas? It's just tent stitch.
And if i did decide to finish it for its presumably intended purpose -- furniture covering -- should I finish in tent stitch for the background, or will something like an interlocking Gobelin or a brick stitch be as sturdy?
Thanks for any advice!
Best stitch for cursive?
I'm a stitch beginner and I've finally hit my first roadblock. I didn't want to do continental and I loved the look of the chain link.....but it definitely didn't come out right 🫤. It's not really legible. What do you usually use for cursive languages?
HELP (ribbon work)
Hi, I am working on a stocking and want to attach a ribbon bow to my canvas on a wreath. I don’t want the thin ribbon with the exposed stitches up under (I don’t like the way it looks🫣). I found this inspo pic on Pinterest. Do any of you know any YouTube videos, blog posts, tiktoks, etc on how to attach something like this? The only thing I am finding is for the thin bows like you would do with river silks. Here’s the pic: (I’m not the biggest fan of this type of bow, I just want a traditional bow)
Michael's DMC Tapestry Wool clearance
My local Michael's has put their very minimal stock of DMC Tapestry Wool packs on clearance. When I asked an employee, they said it seemed as if they weren't going to carry it in stores anymore. These are the boxed assortments of colors, 12 skeins (8.7 yds/skein) going for $11. Feels like a good time to stock up if you stitch with this kind of wool.
First Self-Designed Project
Hi! Just popping in to share my first self-designed and counted project. I thought I’d hate counting (I love the mindlessness of a painted canvas) but it really wasn’t so bad once I got the hang of the Stitchly chart! I used Silk & Ivory in 9 different pinks for the letters and a butter yellow for the background. I’m 26 weeks pregnant with my daughter, who we’ve named Seraphina, after a long journey with infertility, recurrent miscarriage, and endometriosis. I’ve longed for this moment, to be able to needlepoint something for my child. I poured all my gratitude, grief, and hope into this project. It’s surreal to look at. If you’re in the trenches of infertility, I see you and my heart is with you. This hobby has helped me survive so much pain, so lean into it and let it offer you the relief you so deserve.
copying designs for own use
I’ve been debating posting this but decided to fuck it and see what you guys will think. I’m based in Europe and unfortunately here we have very limited access to modern canvases, basically my only option is w my own designs or getting digital charts from Etsy. I’ve seen a lot of conversion about Etsy sellers often copy designs and ethics of it. And here’s my question, as my buying options are limited due to my location, and many US shops don’t ship outside of US or after shipping and fees literally the prices of canvases would triple, I was thinking of literally copy designs from photos on the websites and just stitching it. I understand that artists created it, but at the same time I’m not selling it or making any profit from that. I hope you’ll understand what I mean as my message is quite chaotic (obv English is not my native language). I’m wondering about your opinions about this topic.
Resort box
Thoughts on getting the penny linn box resort on Friday. I am going back and forth on it
Oh Darling Canvas In Stock!
A lot of people had some interest in one of my canvases on Facebook, and I wanted to share that this canvas is now in limited stock in my Etsy shop for the time being! ☺️❤️
Stitch Help - Charley Harper Kitten 'N Knitting-Cat Sleeps In Yarn
Hi! I am about to start this piece and I’m stuck in the balls of yarn. It has these light black lines over the balls but if I don’t want to do the usual basket weave and then a line of thread over it because I want to make this a tote bag and that will snag easy. Any ideas for stitches or how to make these look like balls of yarn without long threads?
French knot help
They look so weird. It’s my first time doing them what an I doing wrong?
Most Recent Self Finish!
My most recent self finish! Made for my boyfriend’s golf bag and perfect for our 250th anniversary! Not perfect because I made it a little big, so getting it flat inside the fob was difficult, but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.
