Considering a Pontiac Solstice GXP, how much room is there to negotiate?

I’m looking at a Pontiac Solstice and trying to figure out if it’s a reasonable buy, especially since I’ll only be keeping the car for a relatively short time.
For anyone who owns/has owned one:

How much should I realistically expect to negotiate the asking price down?

What are the most common issues I should look out for when inspecting one?

Are there any expensive/problematic repairs that tend to come up?

If something does go wrong, are we generally talking hundreds of dollars or thousands to fix?

Anything specific I should check before buying one?

I’m trying to figure out how much of a repair/maintenance buffer I should have beyond the purchase price. Any advice from Solstice owners would be appreciated!

ZZP sway bar and factory down pipe

2004 Grand Prix GTP

Swapped to old lower control arm style and installed the ZZP solid sway bar. The factory down pipe is now resting on the sway bar.

Has anyone else dealt with this after going with their sway bar?

Will replacing the down pipe give me some relief? Or will I need to repair/adjust/replace some of the exhaust hangers down the line? Not really looking to do a full exhaust kit on this car but will if I have to.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Can share pictures on request.

Engine problems

I have a '07 g6, 3.5 v6. Today I was on my way to work, speeding up after someone in front of me turned, when the RPMs suddenly shot up and I had almost no power, then everything tanked and it died. Now when I try to start it, it cranks, but sputters and backfires. It's my only car and I can't afford a new one right now, so I need to fix it. Any clue what may be wrong?

New to me 99 Trans Am WS6

I just bought a 1999 Trans Ams WS6, 6 speed, T-tops from the original owner, with just under 68k miles, in very good condition. Looking for recommendations on forums to increase my knowledge and help troubleshooting anything. Also, if anyone is in Maryland, that can recommend skilled, knowledgeable, reliable, and respectful mechanics for work I can't do, I'd appreciate it. I'm also the original and current owner of a 2009 Pontiac G8 GT and my first car was a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP.

Help me find my '65 Pontiac LeMans — last known location: Springfield, OR

Hi everyone. I'm trying to track down a 1965 Pontiac LeMans (GTO Clone) that I owned back in the early nineties. I sold it in 1992 to a man named Jerry Hooton in Oregon, who owned Fins Drive In in Springfield. I recently reached out to Jerry (before losing my Facebook), and he told me he'd sold it to a local guy whose name he couldn't remember. Around 2020, that same person came into Fins and mentioned he still had the car sitting in his garage, not driving it.

So somewhere in the Springfield/Lane County area, there's a charcoal grey '65 LeMans with a red interior and custom pinstriping, garaged and unused. It has a 398 bored over to 400, Edelbrock intake, Hooker headers, and dual 2" exhaust. It originally wore California plate 422 ZNH when I had it.

the only evidence I have are the photos I got from Jerry when he and I spoke in 2022. The photos are shot at Fins in the early nineties. The first photo is dated 6/16/94.

I would be interested in offering to buy back the car from the current owner, but mostly just want to know that it survived.

Any leads, even small ones, mean a lot. Thank you.

I’m 19 and I am looking at buying a car and I have really become set on this car. I’m looking to buy one in November and I want to know as much as I can about what I should look for when I go to look at them. Tell me everything you know maintenance wise, why I should buy it and why I shouldn’t. Also what should I do when I buy it to make sure I don’t run into any problems.

Purchasing 1986 Fiero GT- check list

Hey all ,

Some background info: I’m a modern car guy but not a vintage car guy.

I’m buying an ‘86 Fiero GT for my dad (it’s from a dealer in FL) and flying out of state to look at it before pulling the trigger. Dealer’s already had their own mechanics go over it, and they don’t allow third-party inspectors to touch the car — but they’re willing to put it on a lift while I’m there and take me for a test drive.

Since I’ll only get one shot at this in person, want to make sure I know exactly what to look at/listen for.

Specifically:

What should I be checking while it’s on the lift (rust spots, mount condition, leaks, etc.)?

What should I listen/feel for on the test drive that would flag engine, clutch, or trans issues?

Any GT-specific things (fastback body, Getrag 5-speed) I should double check beyond general Fiero stuff?

Any red flags in dealer-provided inspection reports I should push back on or ask more questions about?

Appreciate any input — want to go in prepared since I won’t have my own mechanic there with me.

63 Pontiac Catalina (wine mixer edition)

When I saved this from the wrecker it was a body ratchet strapped to a suburban frame. I paid scrap value: $400. In 3 weeks I put in an engine, transmission, transfer case, brakes, steering, wheels, tires, windows, and interior. I built it almost completely with spare parts and now I’ve driven it all over the US and Mexico.

1973 Pontiac Grand Am — Value?

Hi, I’m helping my grandmother sell my late grandfather’s 1973 Pontiac Grand Am 2-door and would appreciate some opinions on what it’s worth.

- Factory 400 2-barrel V8 / automatic
- Black exterior / burgundy interior
- A/C, power windows, power brakes, power steering, tilt, Rally II wheels
- Odometer shows 98k, but actual mileage is unknown
- Runs and drives great
- Solid frame and overall good condition
- Original factory documentation

CONS: A/C doesn’t seem to work, battery drains after sitting, and there’s a radiator/coolant leak around the cap

What would you say it’s worth as-is, and what would you realistically list it for?

I can post more pictures/details if needed.

The Cruisin' Tigers GTO & All Pontiac Club show crystal lake Illinois 2026

Today and yesterday was a great time in Crystal Lake Illinois car show. Unfortunately today, Sunday a storm came through and hurt attendance. But some great cars. We took our family 67 firebird OHC6 that my grandmother bought new. Won two awards. One, a top 50 award, and surprisingly the chairman's award!! I feel really blessed to be awarded them.

Slightly different interpretation than this video if Pontiac survived.

This video--yes it uses AI but its one of the better ones, and has a full human narrator--did a "what-if scenario" if Pontiac had survived GM's bankruptcy. Overall, not a bad video, but wanted to point out a few things:

  1. Pontiac had ZERO chance of survival. The Obama Administration pretty much forced GM's hand with regards to their bankruptcy: eliminate brands. Barack Obama told Rick Wagoner personally that they weren't getting a bailout unless they dropped Pontiac. Before we get into a political discussion, I should add that this would have happened regardless of who was President at the time.

  2. The video suggested that NUMMI would have stayed open. I still think NUMMI would have closed in 2010. In the 1980s it was mutually beneficial because Toyota needed to learn American tendencies due to tariffs importing cars from Japan (and especially pickup trucks that to this day are still subject to the 25% "chicken tax") while GM wanted to learn the "Toyota Way" and implement it in their corporate culture. Of course, in typical GM fashion, GM learned nothing from it while Toyota was able to implement its processes to other American plants and without the UAW. By the time it closed it was clear GM needed Toyota more than Toyota needed GM.

  3. BECAUSE this video assumed that NUMMI stays open and doesn't get sold to Elon Musk to build Tesla's, it predicted that the Pontiac Vibe continues to be a Toyota clone of some sort to this day, whether it be the Toyota Matrix or the current Corolla hatchback. If Pontiac had survived I believe the Vibe would have become a Chevy Trax clone by 2013. Maybe take a brief hiatus--build an extended run of 2010 models before NUMMI closes, then skip the 2011 and 2012 model years altogether before bringing back the Vibe as an early 2013 model. They could have also simply moved production to Toyota's plant in Canada where they made the Matrix until the completely-in-house, GM-designed replacement was ready.

Why the Trax? The Vibe and Trax are pretty similar-sized vehicles with similar attributes. And because Pontiac already had an established history with the Vibe and shared dealership showrooms with Buick, it would be the Vibe and not the Buick Encore that is initially sold here. For those who recall, GM initially had no plans to sell the Trax in the US until the unexpected sales success of the Encore prompted them to change their minds. In this scenario, the Trax-based Vibe takes off enough for GM to introduce the Trax and Encore to the US market.

  1. Even if Pontiac had survived GM's bankruptcy, it would still eventually be killed off. The culprit? SUVs and crossovers. Again, Pontiac shared showrooms with Buick as well as GMC. Would GM, say, sell three versions of the exact same vehicle in the same showroom? Imagine the Pontiac Torrent, GMC Terrain, and Buick Envision in the same showroom, all as Chevy Equinox clones. Even now with just the Terrain and Envision, you can only justify the Terrain, especially with Chinese tarriffs on the Envision. Hell, I've been seeing a lot of Buick-GMC dealerships now just going down to GMC or, if they also sell Chevrolet or Cadillac, dropping Buick while keeping the rest. Makes me wonder if Buick becomes a China-only brand and is dropped here.

Thoughts?

Is this a good buy? $4750 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Sedan 178k miles. Owned by a retired mechanic for 18 years and is MINTY

Here’s what he has to say
“1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GP Supercharged Sedan
$4,750 OBO
178,560 Miles | Clean Title | Current Registration | Smog Ready
If you're looking for one of the nicest, most meticulously maintained Grand Prix GPs available, this may be the carfor you.
This is a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Supercharged 4-Door Sedan powered by the legendary 3800 Series Il Supercharged V6. The vehicle has spent most of its life in San Jose, California and has always been garage kept. It is completely rust-free and has been maintained throughout its life by a General Motors factory-trained and certified technician using GM replacement parts.
This vehicle runs and drives exceptionally well. The engine is smooth, the transmission shifts perfectly, and there are no warning lights or known mechanical issues. It is fully sorted, reliable, and ready for daily driving or long-distance travel.
Major Maintenance and Upgrades:
• GM SERTA replacement transmission installed at approximately 110,000 miles
• Replacement supercharger installed at approximately 120,000 miles with lifetime warranty
• New A/C compressor installed approximately 500 miles ago
• New radiator
• Brand new brake rotors and brake pads on all four wheels
• Four brand new Michelin premium tires (approximately 97% tread remaining)
• Current oil service and maintenance up to date
• Belts and water pump in excellent condition
Features:
• 3.8L Supercharged Series II V6
• Automatic transmission
• Heated driver's seat
• Power driver's seat
• Power windows
• Power door locks
• Cruise control
• Ice-cold air conditioning
• Remote keyless entry
• Alpine Bluetooth hands-free stereo system
• Steering wheel audio controls
• Subwoofer system
Interior Condition: The seats, dashboard, headliner, carpet, door panels, and trim are all in immaculate condition. The interior presents almost like a much newer vehicle and is one of the highlights of this car.
Exterior Condition:
The paint is in very good to excellent condition with a deep shine. There is absolutely no rust. There are a few minor cosmetic imperfections, including a couple of small bumper marks and a few very minor dents that are difficult to notice.
This vehicle has been meticulously maintained throughout its life and repaired whenever needed rather than deferred. It is a rare opportunity to purchase a clean, unmodified, rust-free GTP that is ready to enjoy immediately.
I would not hesitate to drive this vehicle from California to Florida and back. It is dependable, comfortable, powerful, and ready for its next owner.
$4,750 OBO”

The car looks great inside and out. There’s no cosmetic defects anywhere really there is a tiny tiny crack in one of the rear tail lights, which is easy to fix or replace. Two tiny dents on the right side on the rear quarter panel, but there’s no fade in the paint. None of the leather seating is worn out by the sun. All of it feels solid. It even comes with us all the original factor service manuals, as well as paperwork for the transmission job and supercharger job.(supposedly has a lifetime warranty on the supercharger with paperwork.) also came with a car report that was very extensive and he is the second owner of the vehicle.

First owner had it for about eight years and since then he’s owned it and now it’s been about 18 since he bought it. He is a mechanic by trade he’s retired. He worked at a GM dealership in San Jose for 50 years, so knows the ins and outs of this vehicle and has done most of the work himself stuff like the transmission rebuild and supercharger replacement he had done at certified shops.

It’s posted at 4750 but he told me the lowest his wife would allow him to take her would be 4K. Sure it may be slightly higher mileage, but these engines are bulletproof and that’s even the ones that weren’t well-maintained. On the other hand has been extremely well, maintained its entire life as far as fluids and maintenance and repairing things as they appeared in a prompt manner. No issues were ever left and dealt with when it came to this vehicle.

Also, it has 178,000 miles but I really don’t think they’re very hard Miles considering this was his wife’s car. At the same time though the reason they had a transmission rebuild at 120 K was because his wife accidentally blew/burnt out the transmission due to a hard acceleration regularly off the line.

If I purchased his car, I already plan on getting a transmission rebuild kit to reinforce the glass transmission that these things have so it’ll shift faster tighter and have less slippage and be less likely to have an issue with it again.

If I purchase this car, the end goal is to upgrade the supercharger to the same exact one that’s in this vehicle now just not the GEN three but the GEN five as with an adapter plate the cost about $60. I can put the GEN five supercharger right onto my vehicle and With a little bit of tuning can pretty much get it to Bolt-on add 20 to 30 hp. Then I’m gonna do a stage 2 performance kit shit out another 20 to 30. Hp.

At this point, I’m just rambling but just take a look at the pictures and the info provided and help me decide if 4000 for this. Grand Prix is worth it.
