Ads are so much easier to accidentally click now.

Not only have ads on smartphone apps and websites (including but certainly not limited to Reddit) gotten more numerous, invasive, and “personalized” (via collecting your data), nobody seems to be talking about the fact they seem to be so much easier to “accidentally” click than ever before. Why is it that it seems most buttons and links on modern smartphones take a reasonable amount of precision tapping to activate, yet for ads, even breathing in their general direction is enough to activate them? Or the developer will load their stuff immediately, but load the ads on a 2-10 second delay so it pops right over the button you intend to press, precisely as you intend to press it.

This is a nuisance at best, but as often as WebKit vulnerabilities get discovered, I really don’t like being forced against my will to navigate to unknown and (if they’re using these tactics) seedy/sketchy websites. I wish Apple would introduce a standard for all App Store apps for the duration and precision of screen press to open in-app ads.

Tl;dr: Breathe in general direction of advertisement and it opens the full website.

Fuck ads.

Fuck ads. That's it. I get companies want to stick their products in our faces and somehow it works out for them as a business. But why do NTs find ads so fascinating and get easily deceived by a clearly brainwashing video designed to make you spend money. Not only the internet is filled with ads everywhere, but as my mom gets a little tech savvier, I have now to watch long-ass ads in the comfort of my home, or I'll make her sad somehow because I'm not brainwashing myself with a 10 minute ad for a random product for her. 🫠 Who the fuck invented ads anyway? 🤬

LPT: Never click the top "Sponsored" Google results when downloading software.

This is currently one of the most common ways people get their computers infected and their accounts stolen, even if they consider themselves tech-savvy.

When you Google common, free software (like VLC, OBS, Zoom, or even Audacity), the very first link at the top of the page is often an ad with a "Sponsored" tag.

Hackers buy these Google Ad slots. They create a website that looks 100% identical to the real software's website. They even use URLs that look nearly perfect. Because it's a paid ad, Google temporarily places it above the actual, legitimate website.

If you download the installer from the sponsored link, it usually installs the real software you wanted so you don't get suspicious. But in the background, it silently installs an "Info-stealer". This malware instantly scrapes your browser for saved passwords and session cookies. With your session cookies, hackers can log into your email or bank accounts, completely bypassing your 2-Factor Authentication (2FA).

The solution:

  1. Always scroll past anything marked Sponsored or Ad.
  2. Only click the first organic (unpaid) search result.
  3. Wikipedia is a great tool for this: if you aren't sure what the official URL for a piece of software is, look up the software on Wikipedia and click the official website link in their info box.

Don't trust search engine ads for software downloads.

Movie trailers that crushed it but the movie was bad

I’ll go first, Fifty Shades of Grey. When that trailer released with that Beyoncé song it was an instant needle drop. I couldn’t stop watching the trailer. I don’t know what it was but I was like wow, this movie might actually be good. Then the movie was released and well, if you’ve seen it then well you know.

Anyone else have any examples of this where the trailer got a lot of People excited but then the movie was absolute dog 💩?

Edit: man, there are so many votes for suicide squad in the comments that I’m going to have to go back and watch the trailer. I remember watching the movie on hbo max but don’t remember the trailer at all.

I got an ad on Reddit for the exact item I just purchased at the grocery store. I never googled it before. How!?

About an hour ago, I noticed my drain was slow to drain. First time it ever happened. I had nothing to do, so I walked to the grocery store and purchased a small bottle of Drano with my debit card. It was the smallest bottle they carried - NOT the standard size.

I didn’t use a loyalty card. Just my debit card.

About 30 minutes after purchasing it, I got home and got on Reddit. The first ad I saw after opening the app was for the EXACT bottle of Drano I just purchased, size and all!

For the record, I did not google Drano or anything clog/drain-adjacent. All I did was see my drain clogged then decide I was going to purchase Drano. That’s all.

HOW did that happen? I’ve seen these targeted ads before but I always figured it was because I googled something topic related (e.g., “drain clogged”).

But, nothing I’ve googled would even suggest my drain was clogged!

How did this happen??
