Phil Barone: Where to find?

Hi! My husband has a big milestone birthday coming up, and he’s always wanted to own a Phil Barone soprano (unlaquered.)

I have been calling used shops and antique stores for days and days up to several states away and have come up completely empty handed.

Does anyone have advice on places to call or to look at online? I’ve tried eBay and reverb already. Are there any similar places to go?

Thank you!!

How to make altissimo notes come out easier

Hello,

Currently, I have learnt the saxophone (alto) for precisely six months, and I have managed to play 3 octaves, from low C to high C altissimo with relative ease. Nevertheless, I have to admit that high F# and G does not come out as easily as high A or C. Is there any way to improve, or just keep practicing and long tones?

Intermediate Soprano and Alto Saxophones Pricing

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for recommendations for both an intermediate soprano sax and an intermediate alto sax that won’t completely destroy my budget. I’ve been playing for a while and want something that’s a noticeable upgrade from a beginner/student horn, but I’m not really in the price range for high-end pro models yet.

I’d especially appreciate:

  • Best value used models
  • Reliable brands/models to look for
  • Good options under roughly $1k–$2k (used or new)
  • Anything to avoid

Right now I’ve been hearing a lot about Yamaha, Jean Paul, Jupiter, and some older Selmers, but I’d love opinions from people with actual experience.

Thanks!

MEEKLEY WAIT -TrNscription

This solo uses a very simple melody and chord tones to create a sense of progression, proving that instrumental interest can be achieved even with just arpeggios. The F7 arpeggio, in particular, is simple—just going up and down—but its effect is tremendous.
I use an old Selmer instrument from 1928, about 100 years old. The mouthpiece is a 1950s Selmer Soloist C-Star, and the reed is a Hemke 3 1/2.

Help with purchase of Buescher 1951 Series 3 Alto

Hello Saxophonics!

I'm interested in this horn (Buescher Aristocrat 3, serial: 339650) but I know very little about the nuances to saxes so I'm hoping you'll give me a more knowledgeable opinion. I was quoted at $800.

This is relaquered and regarding the playability, a couple of the buttons aren't depressing completely and there is likely a leak on the lower end somewhere.

Problem notes are high F (w/ front keys), middle C (w/ middle finger), low F, D, C#, C, B. I can get them to sound, but not crispy and full. The white mouthpiece has a chip at the base, but functions well.

What do you think, worth fixing up or should I pass?

Help with mouthpiece adjustment

so I’m a high schooler, I play tenor sax, and I just made a big change in my setup as I’m going to be in top band and lead in jazz band. I got a new high quality yamaha sax, and switched from a Yamaha 4C for everything to a Rousseau 5R for concert band and a jody jazz 6* for jazz band. I usually use size 3 vandoren blue boxes for concert band and size 3 V16s for jazz band. I basically just got to try these things out and I sound terrible, my pitch is shakey, the new mouthpieces are hard to play on, and I squeak and go sharp a lot whenever I go into the higher octaves.

how do I get used to these two mouthpieces? I have all summer to practice for next year, I just need guidance

How old is my "new" C-Melody sax?

It is a Buescher, Low Pitch, S/N 141385. The USA Horn lookup tool puts it at 1912. Is it really that old? I thought the standardization to A=440 was more like the 1920 and 1930s. So I guessed it much newer than 1912. How can I tell it the mouthpiece is an alto or C-Melody? Seller is not a player, and "had been told" it is a C-melody mouthpiece.

EDIT - It is clearly a 1923 Buescher. I used the S/N table wrong. Thanks for the help and insights.

Best deal you’ve ever seen for a bari?

What it says. Some time in the next few years I’d love to get a baritone. I’m happy to go with a used instrument and I don’t care much about aesthetic damage that doesn’t affect playability. (My secondhand alto is named Harvey after Harvey Dent, due to the asymmetrical damage to the lacquer.)

What’s the best price you’ve ever seen for a bari sax that turned out to be truly playable and not require the same amount of money in repairs?

need help

i just got a selmer concept mouthpiece for my alto but it sounds airy and resistant, just thought i needed to adjust bc it’s a new mouthpiece, it’s been 6 days with long practice sessions, i play on a 3.25 signature legere reed, i would love to find a great reed to pair with it and it to be a synthetic reed any recommendations?
thx

Finally, Yanagisawa TWO2 and I completely get the hype now

I’ve played a few saxes over the years, but this one instantly felt special. Smooth, warm, easy blowing, and beautifully built.

Looking forward to many gigs, rehearsals, and late night practice sessions with this beauty.

should i get a different mouthpiece or not?

i just started renting a jupiter jas-767-769 sax from a local music shop and i plan on buying it after the rent since it's secondhand, in very good condition, cheap and it's already checked by the music shop. should i get a new/better mouthpiece for it? i've seen some people say that you should get a better mouthpiece on cheaper saxophones online nad so i wonder is it worth it? and if so what should i get?

Anyone found a good tablet for sax scores?

Honestly about to give up on my current setup. My 11-inch screen is way too small to read from a stand and the glare in our rehearsal room is brutal. I looked into e-ink but I can't deal with the page-turn lag for fast charts.

Has anyone tried that TCL NXTPAPER 14? I heard it's huge and matte, but I'm curious if it's actually any good for music or if it's just hype. My eyes are fried lol.

I need help with buying

I am looking to buy an alto and I'm between the awo1 and yas-62 (I did look at the axos and it just seems like it's lower quality than the other two), but I want to try them, and I also want to buy from Sweetwater for the 48 month financing and I'd feel bad going to a music store and asking to try an instrument knowing I won't buy from them. I'm set on the 48 month financing because I'm about to be 17 and I am applying to jobs to buy this (if you guys want to drop advice on filling out applications and interviews I would GREATLY appreciate that).

Overall I want advice between those saxes, job application/interview, and anything that would help me avoid the guilt of trying an instrument knowing I won't buy it.

All helpful comments are appreciated!

Tenor setup like a Meyer 6m?

hey all! i’m a doubler, whose primary instrument is flute. i like to think i play alto pretty well - but tenor is where im really lacking. my jazz alto setup is a meyer 6m with select jazz reeds strength 3s. i know generally people live by meyers on alto, and links on tenor. ive tried an otto link la 6 but found it very difficult to make sound. maybe because of the higher baffle? i play professionally on other instruments, but im really struggling here. can anyone suggest a tenor piece that will give me a similar feel that i get from my setup on alto? TIA!
