My saxophone is leaky and the random notes squeak. High range notes and low range notes squeak. My main question is should I keep practicing because it dont wanna fall behind my peers when school starts.

I think it is a leaky pad and even though I have asked my parents they wont let it get fixed because of financial reasons.

Conn 10m naked lady model from 1936 vs 1952 Martin committee iii

Between the two which do you personally prefer? I’m potentially buying a conn naked lady for 2,000$ it’s in playable condition and it’ll either be my main tenor or backup depending on if I like it more than my Martin, it’ll be paired with a GS slant mouthpiece

Very surprised by Berg larsen 110/2/SMS

what are your opinions on this mouthpiece?

I bought this piece few months ago and i like it a lot, much more than my link (NY 7*).

I am genuilely impressed by this mouthpiece, it can sound really dark with a good subtone, but if you push a little you get that straight ahead R&B sound.

The tip opening is not really 110, i actually measured it at 98 (maybe it has been worked on?) It has a very little round baffle and the small chamber with the drop in the bore (it's a berg larsen scoop bill); i also noticed that it has small tip rails (and to my surprise very even) but i don't know if this affects the sound.

The only problem that i have is that when i start playing it and it is still cold i can't get out the low notes (with the otto link i had no problems), any suggestions on how to improve that?

I am currently using 3,5 red java on it.

Yanagisawa tenors play a bit flat?

I've been loaned a Yani T880 to see what I think.

The ergonomics are really cool and it responds really well, but it sure has a long warm-up period. I mean it plays noticeably flat to my ear for quite a long time before it comes up to pitch.

NOTE: I've got the mp pushed onto the neck about as far as I can get it, but it's still initially really flat.

On my own sax (Beaugnier-made early 50s Selmer Pennsylvania), I never have this problem. It plays in tune and at pitch right out of the case. I just lip notes slightly up or down as needed as I play. I don't even notice this anymore.

Has anyone else found Yanis tend to play a bit flat? This is my first time playing one, so maybe it's just my embouchure/choice of mp/reed)

MP is a slightly wider opening Buescher (50s era) and I like playing Legere Signature 2.25 reeds.

Yamaha YTS-475

Hello! I am picking up this Yamaha YTS-475 tenor sax for $700. I was wondering if this is a good deal?
The seller has the receipt for the repairs that were made for its service. "They straightened some bent keys and rods, replaced the high Eb pad, put on a new neck cork and key cork, and adjusted and oiled the keys". I am going to list the photos provided.

Everything included:
- Original Yamaha hard case
- New Yamaha 4C mouthpiece and cap
- New Yamaha brass ligature
- New Rico tenor neck strap
- D'Addario Royal 2.5 reeds
- Service receipt from Repair

Also, if I meet with them at a local music store, would the store be able to check out the saxophone for free to see if there is anything wrong with it? Or how does that usually work? Thank you!

Commuting and cases - Recommendations for YTS62

Hello, my 15 year old will be taking his tenor to school everyday from September via 2/3 buses and a walk (we're based in London) - he has a YTS62 and the case is too big and cumbersome, so we are looking for a more practical case with back straps. Can anyone recommend a case that would fit this model and suit this purpose?

Should I replace my reeds? I have some unused that I bought over a year ago and am wondering if they “go bad” over time?

Beginner Tenor

Evening all, apologies as this has undoubtedly been asked before, I just can't seem to find it, I'm fast approaching 50 and have loved the sound of a Sax since a child but never played.

My wife wants to buy me my first Sax as a birthday present as something to learn now that the kids are older and we have more time.

At the moment I'm drawn between the Yamaha YTS280 and the Trevor James "The Horn". I know the Yamaha is held in high regard, but there is a difference in price between the two of almost £400. I'd welcome thoughts from the community on whether the additional price is worth it, or would the Trevor James be an equally good starting point? Are there any major issues between the two?

Thanks in advance and thank you for all the posts, it's been great to hear of people's experiences.

Question for fellow classical players

Hi all!

I have an opportunity to play Glazunov's Concerto with an orchestra. I was wondering what others think of the different cadenzas available. As of now I am practicing with the original one. Some are really not fitting into the style in my opinion, I only want to play another version if its clearly an improvement, if I had a little more time I would even think of writing my own. So, what are you opinions? I welcome any possible suggestions as well, thank you in advance!

Sax on a boat

Ok, so I’m going on a 4th of July trip on my families boat and I really want to bring my sax to play on the island, but I’m super worried about the salt in the air. It will be stored in a bedroom downstairs, but I’m gonna have to take it on a dinghy to get it to shore. the trip is 8 days long. Is this a no go???

Leo P is Amazing

Dear Saxophonists,

My name is Edwin, and despite not playing saxophone but still very knowledgeable about music and play piano and drums, I firmly believe that Leo P is the best saxophonist to ever grace the earth. He delivers such passion and enthusiasm (and dance moves) to what he does which is like no other artist I’ve seen before ne is so entertaining to watch, from the insanely high-pitched riffs to the occasional flourishes that burst out at you unexpectedly. But as I don’t know much about the saxophone and wanted to know more, I thought it best to consult the people who do, so please do give me your thoughts.

In case you haven’t heard of him, here’s a little starter kit:

Where to sell mouthpieces

I’ve got a tm2 that I want to sell, but I have no idea where to sell. Where I live, Facebook marketplace has no chance of selling it, so something online would be great. Where should I sell it? Thanks!

What kind of mouthpiece is this!?!?!?

Saw this listed online and I’m very interested. It’s listed for 100$ and I think I might take the gamble. Seller has no info on it and there’s no markings on it anywhere. He says it might be vintage but not sure. It weighs 100grams appears to be made of brass with possible silver plating. I asked for pics of the chamber straight on but I’m still waiting on those. Lmk what you think!

Check Out My Solo

Saxophone: Selmer Super Action 80 Series II Tenor

Mouthpiece: Selmer Concept Tenor

Any comments on tone, phrasing, time feel, and improvisation would be greatly appreciated.

I have a formal music education in classical saxophone (music college), but everything related to jazz — tone, improvisation, phrasing, and language — has been self-taught. To be honest, I'm very self-critical, so I'm looking for some outside opinions.

Mouthpiece Patches/Bite Pads

For sax players out there who use a mouthpiece patch/bite pad....Theo Wanne used to make a patch that was "hard", and they don't make them anymore. I prefer that firm feel to the spongy/rubbery soft bite pads. Does anyone know someone who makes the hard/firm mouthpiece patches/bite pads? Do most people like the soft/spongy ones?
