Wheel bearings - timken or moog?

2020 ascent, 156k

Need rear wheel bearings and the dealer said roughly 1700 after tax to do them. Since they are full hub assemblies I'll just do them myself.

Normally I would just buy the timken bearings and keep moving along. However, on rockauto the preferred (heart icon) is actually a moog bearing.

I use moog on my jeep and Infiniti so I'm sure it's fine too.

But I figured I would post here to see if anyone has direct experience with these two rear ascent wheel bearing choices. If nobody does then I'll report back after a couple months so it helps someone else.

Have a great day and thanks for reading!

California/Arizona/Utah/Colorado/Nevada road trip

I just did a week plus road trip from Northern California to the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Capital Reef, Swingarm City OHV, Arches, Canyonlands, Castle Valley, Golden, and Redrocks for The Elovaters and Collie Buddz and Hip Abduction in my car. I did have to do a night of tent camping because of legality of sleeping in a car in Golden… and winds blew the tent all to hell. I took hundreds of photos and videos and panoramic but am limited to 20 pics. Subaru Ascent Onyx Edition worked great and got great mileage, and fit my 2 Plano camp boxes, AstroAI freezer, RTIC and Pelican coolers, Bluetti Elite 300&AC2L and charged via the Charger 2, and I slept in the back of the car on a Luno bed. It honestly was a pretty perfect setup. Now I have to clean it all out 🤣

2022 with 70k miles new issue

I tried searching to see if anyone else experiencing this issue but couldn’t find anything so sorry if someone else has posted about this.

Our 2022 Ascent just hit 70k recently and it seems like somethings are not running as smooth. First, the gas pedal, when at a stop I feel like there is a delay in pick up until the gas is somewhere between 50-60% pressed down, then it kind of launches fast. Secondly, the shifting of the gears seems to be becoming much more noticeable and clunky. I know CVT are not the smoothest transmissions and that the transmissions before 2021 were terrible but I’m starting to wonder if it’s starting to go.

Has anyone one else had these issues. I have it serviced regularly at a Subaru dealership and there are not any check engine codes that are triggered.

12V car cooler

Update: Thanks for the insights! I’ll accept that taking it in at the hotel is the way to go and load the vehicle accordingly. - I’ve got an absurd amount of stuff we’ll be shoving in the vehicle for our adventure so I just had my fingers crossed. Lol.

——

Anyone have experience plugging a 12V car cooler into their Ascent?

My real question is: If I leave it plugged in overnight in the vehicle, will I find my car battery depleted? I have a camping trip coming up but we are spending the first night of the trip in a hotel. I’m trying to plan accordingly with the least amount of effort at the hotel stop.

Question on Maintenance for High Mileage Ascent

Hello, I recently picked up a 2020 Ascent Touring with 127k miles. It drives great and I love it so far. I'm curious if I ought to have any preventative maintenance done for it such as differential fluid change, coolant change, or pcv valve replacement?

Thank you guys

2024 Subaru ascent transmission

46k the transmission was slipping a little bit if I didn’t step on pedal hard enough for
Downshift. On the way home started hearing squeaking noise then entire dash lit up like a Christmas tree. From a dead stop the car shutters now. Pulled the engine code and it said transmission pump failure. I had an 2019 outback with no engine or transmission problems and my buddy just put a 100k on it. Sucks that this one almost left us stranded.

Oil change recommendations

We have a ‘26 Ascent Onyx and bought the lifetime oil change plan at the dealership. This is our 4th Subie but the first with a turbo charger so what do you recommend for the oil change interval? I think the lowest I can go is 5k with the plan and they recommend 6k.

SXM in vehicle messaging

Every time an in car message pops up. I see a post on here about how it’s annoying that you’re being marketed to your vehicle. SiriusXM is offering a way to opt out of the in Vehicle messaging. So I wanted to share this for anyone who wanted to opt out now before the free Sirius xm event starts on 5/21.

Converting into a Camper

Wanted to share my progress with everyone who might be interested.

I am planning a cross-continent trip to Alaska from Florida in my Subaru Ascent 20223 Onyx and this is what I did to prep my car for the adventure.

Step 1: I removed the captain chairs, had to by a proper socket wrench, but overall not too difficult. Found some videos on Youtube for reference.

Step 2: Filled the gaps left by captains chairs with foamies; I had some laying around, but I am sure they can be found in department store.

Step 3: Found a solid thick matt to hold shape as a base for the second row, I got lucky as I stumbled onto one by chance at Costco (roughly 48" x 32", but not a perfect fit).

Step 4: Added an all weather mat (cut to shape) from Amazon, doesn't hold shape well, but in combination to the matt works well and add traction (personal preference).

Step 5: For my mattress I got a tri-fold cot from Amazon for $130. I am very particular about good sleep, so to me that was money well worth it.

Step 6: Used two trail crates from Lowes (18" in height) as a support for bed at night and storage for necessities.

Everything is foldable and collapsible. During my day to day I dont bother taking it out, I just stack it and put it in the trunk.

Hope this helps anyone who is looking to turn their Subi into a camper.

First service after pay off

Just find it funny that the first dealer service after paying off my 2020 ascent is a recommended $7200 to pull the engine to reseal everything and to replace all TPMS sensors…anyone else have this happen?

One sensor has low voltage and I couldn’t even see a leak in the video they sent

2026 Limited Color Help

I drove a white Forester for a long time and then a 2023 white Onyx. I love my Onyx but my lease is up. The dealership has a 2026 Limited in the Sapphire Blue Pearl and also the Ice Silver. The blue seems like a lot, especially coming from white for so long. Help! Does anyone have the sapphire and they like it? Should I hold out for white? My kids love the blue since “mom we’ll be able to find you really easy when you pick us up!” lol.

Who's lifted and what size Wheels and Tires?

Hey all. Im leaning very heavily to replace my totaled '25 OBW with an Ascent Onyx. The first year or so will be basic upgrades. But to get our camper to some of the more hard to reach spots, im hoping to habe a lift.

Have any of you lifted your Ascent? How does it handle? What size wheels and tires are you running?

TIA

2025 Limited Edition, gas does not auto shut off while filling

2025 Limited Edition: gas does not auto-shut off while filling. Got a bunch of gas in my paint on the first fill-up. How do they prevent this from happening? I already dropped it back off at the dealer.

What is this part number?

It sits at the front of the hood, I’m guessing as a dampener or bumper. Mine seems to have fallen off.

We headed to the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area (AOAA) in Coal Township, PA, to take on "The Climb" at Pipeline Trail. Watch as an orange Subaru Crosstrek and a Subaru Ascent navigate the rocky, loose terrain of this iconic hill.

It’s a perfect demonstration of how different wheelbases and line choices affect a climb. While the Crosstrek works to find its footing, the Ascent powers through to the top. This is what the Off Road Roos community is all about—responsible adventuring and testing the limits of our builds in a safe, controlled environment.

Surprisingly good gas mileage!

Hi all - just thought i would add my experience as I just took my first true road trip in my new to me 22 Ascent Premier. 300 miles in MA (so a lot of up and down) and a 40 mile portion of it on back country roads. 29.7 MPG. I do only have the 18" tires so I am sure that helped a bit. Based on this forum I expected it to be a fair amount lower. If I had been down south on a really flat road I would have been in the low 30s...

Tire pressure

How to take my 2023 ascent touring into a tire shop because I had a flat and after they repaired the flat they put all four tires to 43 psi. You need gas as to why they would’ve put them so high? It seems to drive fine.
