[OC] [Photoshop] Fantasy Rail Map of the Upper Great Lakes, emphasis on Wisconsin and Michigan

This is part of a project I'm undertaking to make a unified Midwest passenger rail map. The first map shows routes based on their frequency, the second shows the routes based on who operates or funds them in my mind, and the third tries to color-code each service/corridor. I'm pretty confident in my Michigan map (although I chose to leave out service to South Lyon and Brighton since the Detroit area got kind of jumbled), but if any Wisconsinites notice problems please let me know.

Mapa javnog prevoza u Staroj Pazovi

My idea for what a 110-220 mph electrified high speed rail network could look like by America’s 300th birthday

Happy 250th birthday to America! Here’s my idea of what a 110-220 mph electrified high speed rail network could look like by America’s 300th birthday.

Different speeds make sense for different routes. Some routes like Washingon-New York arguably make sense for 220 mph high speed rail, while others make more sense for 110 mph rail.

Also some routes could be extended using conventional rail such as the route Atlanta and Chattanooga being extended to Knoxville or the route between Seattle and Portland being extended to Eugene. In addition new Amtrak routes, including new Amtrak long distance routes could be added as well.

[OC] what if Toronto's transit map was a soccer ball

Yeah I admit this one is weird and it definitely ain't the most usable map ever made, but I had this random idea one day and thought it'd be funny to superimpose Toronto's FIFA edition city maps onto a FIFA edition soccer ball, and then do a bit of photoshopping for fun. (Drawn in Illustrator)

[OC] Speculative CTA Map

Speculative map inspired by Metra's switch to battery trains to allow for more frequent stops. Interconnected CTA-Metra system with new lines and extensions along pre-exisiting right of way designed with minimal construction in mind. Also tried to give every station a unique name.

[OC] Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) map with line numbers, 2027

NS (Dutch Railways) have finally seen the light and decided to add line numbers to their railway network, starting at the end of this year. I tried my hand at making a map that displays those numbers (as communicated by NS they're only provisional and to be finalized later this year).

The map itself is a regular 45/90 degree design, but I tilted the lines 22.5 degrees, which allowed me to straighten out some important corridors without skewing the diagram too much from the true geography. Also, the Netherlands appear a bit tilted to the right on a usual map layout, so this angle corresponds better to the country's real layout. But it remains a diagram, of course, so other parts don't correspond to their true layout that well (if I would have wanted to create a map that adheres to the true geography, I would have created a geographically accurate map).

I decided to bundle individual lines by logical corridors, starting from NS's intercity (IC) lines, which could be considered the backbone of the network. These are rendered as thick lines on the map. The thinner lines are sprinter (local) lines; wherever these run parallel for a significant portion to IC lines, I gave them the same colour. All NS lines are rendered in vibrant colors; the lines of other train operators are more muted. Line thicknesses correspond to sneltrein (express, thick) and stoptrein (local, thin) services.

Line numbers are shown at each terminal station, but I've added them on top of the lines at strategic positions (major stations, branches) as well to make them easier to follow. I purposely didn't add the IC and S prefixes NS is intending to use - apart from the line thickness, IC lines are planned to be numbered between 1 and 40, whereas S lines will get a number from 41 to (I reckon) 99, so there shouldn't be any overlap. Line numbers already in use by other train operators did get a prefix, as the same number might sometimes be used for parallel running local (RS) and express (RE) services.

[OC] Potential Future Map of Bus Service in Benton Harbor/St Joseph, Michigan

First image is current service: two lines, one is a single direction loop. The second image expands this to 5 hourly routes with better coverage, which seems more fitting for an urban area of over 60,000 people. Made in Photoshop

First image is from TCATA's website: https://mywaythere.org/public-transit/fixedroute/

I’m mapping the entire history of Finland’s railways on Google Earth from 1930–Present. Here is my first version: V1.0.1 (Uusimaa is 95% done!)

Hey everyone, I've been working on this huge project called history uncovered. The plan is to basically turn this into the biggest Finnish history archive on Google Earth.

Right now, I’m tracking the whole rail network from the 1920s to today. Uusimaa is 99% finished and Southern Finland is at about 30%. Since it’s summer break, I’m gonna be updating this pretty frequently. I'm also planning to expand this way past just trains later on—abandoned airports and other infrastructure are coming next.

The Timeline Legend:

  • 🤍 White: Active lines/tracks still physically there today.
  • 🔵 Blue: Modern abandonments (2000 – Present).
  • ♥️ Red: Late 20th-century abandonments (1950 – 1999).
  • 🟣 Purple: Deep history lines (1920 – 1949) — these archives were annoying asf to find.
  • 🟡 Yellow: Uncertain/speculative lines I'm still verifying.
  • 💚 Green: My own hypothetical/fantasy rail expansion concepts.
  • 🖤 Black: Local racing circuits added as a side thing.

A few quick things before you check it out:

  • Rural Accuracy: It's tight in cities, but expect a ~10-meter margin of error in the countryside. Nature has completely reclaimed a lot of the old 1900s embankments, so the line might be a bit off the rail in rural areas.
  • Lag: There are over 1,000 hand-drawn segments. If your phone or browser stutters, just turn off the "3D Buildings" layer in your Google Earth settings and it'll run way better.

If I got something wrong, or if you have any info, old maps, or archives that could help me out, definitely hit me up! Let me know what you guys think.

UPDATE ALREADY 1.0.2A :

everything is now in seperate folders that you can toggle on or off to see them. implementing first airports and other features

UPDATE 1.0.2B:

  • updated the ring railway I/P route for maximum detail
  • finished the lahti-heinola line (ok quality)
  • multiple new subfolders for future mutlipurpose use are:

racetracks

Runway data (name, location, pin, runway lenght, width

hypothetical rail folder

spotting: subfolders; trainspotting, planespotting

stations (will start adding once i fully map out finland by around august time

  • hämeenlinna is now 100% done
  • added planespotting and trainspotting pins for those who need
  • getting closer to 100% completing uusimaa

[oc] I designed a strip map for QBL. Any mistakes?

Few Notes

  • I did not include 5Av/Bryant Park to Times Square transfer
  • I did not merge the line at W4 to avoid clutter
  • I only created a physical line for E, F, M, and R.
    • No lines for C, J, or Z who interline with QBL, 8 Av.
    • No lines for BMT section of Archer Av lines.
  • I truncated R trains at Queens to avoid clutter of Broadway crossing Manhattan Trunks (and since R train is BMT in Manhattan)

Redesigned the Klang Valley transit map for station codes

The current map has station numbers, but they're so atrociously small they're practically useless. Since they've went through the effort of assigning each station a number, why not make good use of them in navigation?

One thing I've never understood is why the lines are given numbers that are only used on maps and never in actual stations or wayfinding. So I've replaced them with the actual line codes that are used in practice.

Simplified London map (Tube/DLR/Overground/Elizabeth) [OC]

I simplified the current Transport for London map for the tube, DLR and overground, to make it easier to read and understand. I fixed uneven spacing of stations, in the original map dictated by zones. This map was made for my game Networkle, a daily train station guessing game. As it is a wayfinding game using stops away, lines and zones, massive interchanges have been made smaller, blobs have been removed to make it easier to interpret, and stations which are close with the same name have been merged into a single interchange. ThamesLink, trams and cable cars have been removed for gameplay purposes. Hope you like it!
