[OC] Transit Diagram of the Central Region on my Modded Minecraft Server made using Affinity
This is a transit diagram of the central region on my Minecraft Server. It shows the regional network comprised of the S-Bahn and the Stadtbahn (U). There are also a handfull of Highspeed Services, but these aren't included on here. It's my first diagram ever made and I'm still planning to add a title and description so it doesn't look this empty.
Share your diagram creation methods (I recently did NYC MTA Subway trunk line flow charts and wondered how others do it)
Hey Peeps!
I'm really interested in how you guys create your diagrams. We've had plenty questions around the tools used but I'm much more interested in how you approach a new project and the kinda tricks you use to speed up slow processes or make create more unity in design.
I have personally been using Figma for work for a long time so thats what I started out on. Building within a frame and using the pen tool with a stroke for lines, then creating groups for stations and text. The component feature makes conformity a lot easier and changes half way through a project so much faster.
I also did some work on Illustrator using roughly the same process but found the overall work slower, maybe cause I'm just not as fluent with it as Figma. I have since moved on to Affinity designer and created the last couple diagrams on it exclusively, the custom grid snapping really helps with keeping conformity up. One aspect I found difficult is to get the corner radius right for parallel alignments. I've also found it tedious to change paths (for de-cluttering e.g) for multiple lines, as all vectors need editing one at a time. I'm sure there would be a shortcut for that I dont know of.
I have recently started a project on my Ipad using concepts and a smartpen. I could no get the right hang of the workflow so far, maybe I'm just approaching it wrong. I think if diagrams didn't take weeks of work each time, I'd be doing a lot more of them. Sometimes its hard to keep motivated. Naming stations has been one of the longest and most repetitive task of all projects for me.
Looking forward to what you guys have to share. Maybe we can all learn something from all the incredible work that is being shared in here!
Cheers!
[OC] My version of the York Region YRT bus map (vs. official)
This one might be a bit niche, but I decided to redraw my local municipal bus map because I hate how the official one looks and I hated trying to make sense of it when I was younger, so I wanted to step in and fix it with my own diagrammatic version. Drawn in illustrator. Full res image here
Some context and notes:
- The official map shows 74 lines, 11+ terminals, and several inconsistently labeled POIs. Of those lines, some of them only run on weekends/weekdays/etc, which I omitted for simplicity.
- Added nodes to show the intersections where bus stops are adjacent to each other (ie, across the street or corner) which wasn't always clear in the original.
- All VIVA rapid transit line stops are labeled with their station name.
- I kept all the bus line colours the same as per the original
- I didn’t design this bus system, so if it looks questionable, I'd also love to know why.
[OC] London in the style of Munich
Imgur link for (probably) higher resolution: https://imgur.com/a/YGXvVJd
I tried to capture Munich's style as perfectly as possible, and I think I succeeded. A few notes:
- This is not a reskin of the official map. I tried to handle a lot of things better, for example the eastern area around London City Airport.
- S Trains are overground lines, D are light railway (DLR) and U are underground lines. Thameslink I renamed into Regional Thameslink to better fit Munich's style.
- Oyster has been renamed ThamesCard by analogue with IsarCard.
- Some lines have been split as Munich doesn't have London's egregious constant splitting of the same line. This means that some services aren't accurate to their real-life versions (DLR for example) but a lot easier to understand.
- Some stations are changed to better reflect their geographical position, such as bringing them closer together to show scale better.
- Lines that cross the Thames are shown over it or under it depending on the method, as is the case in Munich.
- The map was done in Inkscape over multiple weeks.
- Zones have not been adapted at all, so it's really funny how much more cohesive they look as compared to the official Tube Map.
Maybe a controversial opinion, but I don't think the official Tube Map is good in a designer sense. It has a lot of information (like accessibility information which I left out here), but it just doesn't look good (especially the zones!) and sometimes distorts the geographical reality much more than necessary. I'm not a designer and my map doesn't look much worse than theirs by most metrics. And it looks exactly like Munich's official diagram!
[OC] Sapporo Area Transport Map
This is my first ever time completing a vector map, so I hope I did good!
I wasn't really trying to mimic any style (or not that I know of), I just used a style I thought of that I think looks cool. I got the idea to make Sapporo after asking my friend what city's transit map would be easy to make, and then I went with Sapporo. But since I wanted to do the JR Lines too, it made it even more complicated as I needed to look through the stopping patterns... T~T

[OC] Sheerness Line, Kent, England- Drawing Every Rail Line in Britain No.3
History and near future of the Marton County Railways 1908-2028, a metro system for a fictional city I designed. Made using Powerpoint. [OC]
Made something similar a few months ago, but I decided to go away from the Minecraft city style and lean more into the fictional but realistic style.
Yes I know I should use something fancy but oh well.

Schematic for N.Y. PENN STATION EXPANSION PROJECT (PENN SOUTH)
FYI -- Those future tunnels you see there under West 30th St. out to Queens are basically there as decoration since they'll likely never be built.
Even if all went according to plan, the railroads estimate through-running service would be operational by roughly 2080 (not kidding).
So, since all the things they claim are impossible would have to be solved for regardless, the choice we're facing right now is either do Penn Station through-running now with less disruption and for lower cost.... or do the obviously wrong choice.
Happy to elaborate on any of these points for those who are curious/enjoy stirring the pot.

My simplified track schematic of Interim Phase 1 (2040), including CalTrain, AV Line, and OC Line to Anaheim. Passing loops inferred from 2026 Business plan.
Obviously, this is greatly simplified, and omits many platforms and stub tracks at the big stations, as well as yards. The main goal was to visualise the passing loops, and understand how much track sharing and flat junctions there will be under this plan.
The 2026 Business plan was unclear on some details, most notably what actually happens between Sun Valley and LA, where CAHSR and local services now have to share track, but some vague references to passing tracks are made. As a result LAU station is assumed different from the LinkUS plan with CAHSR platforms in the middle to allow terminating services due to lack of rail/rail grade separation and track sharing.
Otherwise 2040+ LinkUS is assumed, with Antelope Valley through running to Perris Valley, and Ventura County through running onto Orange County.
If Metrolink wants to run half hourly AV/PV and VC/OC, there would be need total separation from freight as fitting all the services on a single track pair without rail/rail grade separation is difficult. More investment must be made to ensure a reliable and high quality service. Electrification will help by speeding up these services, and allowing for more reliability as well as more frequency.
Caltrain is assumed to have minimal changes except for new depot and platforms, still terminating at 4th and King and at 79mph, as said in the business plan. Without level boarding and slow local services every half hour, without a timed overtake, there will be a 56 min travel time from SF-SJ. With a timed overtake in Millbrae, this can be reduced to around 47 min with 79mph speeds, but local Caltrain will be slowed 8-9 mins, assuming 3 min minimum headways.
As a result, combined with the passing tracks in the Central Valley plus adequate padding, travel times SF-LA of 4:15 seems likely, with 4:07 possible with Caltrain overtake.
2030s Prague Metro Diagram (D Line)
Prague already has a pretty good Metro diagram (slide 2), and thanks to the simplicity of its current network, it's one of the easiest systems in the world to read and navigate. I took inspiration from this and set out to design my own take on the diagram in Adobe Illustrator, keeping it clean, clear, and accessible. I've also taken it one step further by including the upcoming Line D, which is expected to be completed in the early 2030s, giving a glimpse of what Prague's Metro network will look like in the future. Please feel free to comment with your thoughts and ideas.

[OC] I made for my Cities Skylines city again
[OC] I made for my Cities Skylines city again
Same map, different execution for the new city plan.
I've streamlined the rail transit down to 5 lines:
Tozai Line (Red / Heavy Metro): 21.5km, 19 stations
Hanto Line (Green / Heavy Metro): 20.1km, 16 stations
Airport Line (Blue / Monorail): 19.1km, 18 stations
Circular Line (Orange / Light Rail): 10.3km, 12 stations
Wangan Line (Pink / Light Rail): 12.4km, 15 stations
Also included an inter-city rail route passing through the city and a gondola system.
(Created in Illustrator)
P.S. The city is dead again... the save file is corrupted. QQ

North Rhine-Westphalia's goal rail network for 2040
Nothing is confirmed, but I like they want to reactivate the Nijmegen - Kleve, which is not a wish for Groesbeek (border town in the Netherlands on the route). Also reactivation of the cross border route to Roermond is very unlikely, but I like their ambition.
