Large Wall at front entrance to house? Leave it or lose it? Replace with something else?

Upon entering my house, there is a large divider type door when you first walk in. It does create a nice divide in that it separates the main entrance space from the huge living space around. We are thinking of removing it all together though since it is rather old and doesn’t exactly fit the aesthetic we’re going for. Any ideas on what we can put instead? We considered a slat wall so you can see our backyard upon entering but not sure if it makes sense. We’re also considering a banquette with table and sitting on the other side (not front entrance side) to make use of the wall being there.

Please note the post in the middle of the room holding it up IS loadbearing so if we remove it, that post would have to stay there. Either awkwardly or with something around it 😅

Pretty, but uncomfortable

This is my bedroom+office, in a shared apartment. It's pretty big (roughly 4X4 meters), and I think it LOOKS fine, but somehow really uncomfortable.

I don't have a lot of stuff, but I also never have a good place to store them that also makes sense. The wardrobe also has documents and art supplies, the night stand has medications but also small tools and small documents that I don't want to lose. My desk is uncomfortable. Doing art requires too many steps (gathering things, clearing workspace) so I never do it. I love plants, but have limited places to keep them so I keep giving them away the second they grow TOO well. I often get this weird feeling of... suffocating? Despite everything being pretty neat and organized....

Here are some other things that make it more difficult to solve:

  1. I have a cute-but-chaotic cat (pictured), so things have to be placed in a way that discourages her from wreaking too much havoc.
  2. I rent, and move frequently, so everything needs to be either very versatile and adjustable, or very cheap. Preferably both.
  3. I live in the middle of nowhere (Non-US), so my retail options are limited to IKEA, simple DIYs, and generic things that can be found anywhere.

I lean mostly to scandi / midcentury / neo-industrial (is that a thing?) / brutalist styles, but open to suggestions.

How would you change the layout for this oddly shaped dorm room?

The room is very small but the objects are wardrobe (bottom left), bed, desk (with shelves on top), TV, and shelves. The bed has no space underneath.

How would you design this bedroom

I need ideas on how to design my bedroom. The space is very small and I feel like the bed would take up all the space, so please give me any and all ideas.

Help redesigning home-office

I've moved my furniture (mostly desk :D) multiple times but it never feels quite right. I'm trying to not buy new furniture if possible.
I've put the dimensions in the photos where needed. The furnuture is standard-sized IKEA stuff mostly.
The triangle-window is faching to the west. Downstaris there's the main hall-way. In front of the stairs there's our entry door.

I use this as my full-time home-office and also for personal "office"-stuff, thinkering, DIY-making and gaming.

I'd absolutely love the idea of a standing desk, but I guess this is not possible. Mostly I'd like to have it feel "bigger" and also have more space. Maybe even put a small fridge or a few pillows to be able to watch movies on the wall-mounted display.

The space felt bigger having the desk under the window, but that brough two disadwantages: not being able to open the window and having a open back.

I also liked having the window in th back but as there was so little pace next to the desk I always had the squeeze through between the wall and the desk to get "in". Also the "not so nice" side of my desk (cable-management) was visible from downstairs.

Nieuwbouwwoning indeling 1ste verdieping verbeteren

Hoi allemaal,

Hi guys. Just got a new apartment with my sister. Does anyone have any suggestions for our living room/kitchen. The kitchen has to be on the left side because of the sink, etc. and we also need two desks or one big desk, a couch with tv and a dining table. I‘m grateful for any advices.

Should I shorten the height of the bed?

I have this studio of 20²/m and the bed while it has a nice function as a storage underneath. It feels that it just killing the space by being so high. I had it like that in my old place but that was bigger and it worked. Now I'm not so sure, so I'm thinking of cutting like 30 cm off the legs. What do you think?

2 GIRLS, 1 SMALL STUDIO BED ROOM

Here I have a small 1BDR studio for two girls in their twenties. Trying to figure out a functional living space as 1 girl always leaves two weeks for work and the other with stay home occasionally travels as well. The bed room itself it about 90 sqft. About 10ft vertical and 9 ft horizontal. I thought of the idea of doing bunk beds. The ceilings are about 9.6ft high. I added some Inspo but would love to hear what your best suggestion would be. I love the idea of either one bed vertical and the other horizontal on the bottom or like a nock with the wood framing the bed area one directly in top of each other. We love a very chic fun mature aesthetic. Thank you.

Skyline

I was born from the breath of an old Sicilian workshop, a place where time stood still amidst the scent of resin and the sound of hand planes. I am not merely a work of art: I am an assemblage of memories, a fragment of artisanal history that chose to change its form without ever forgetting its roots.

Here is how I see myself and how I became what you see before you:

The Origin: Reclaimed Wood

Every lath, every board that makes up my form was chosen with surgical precision. No varnish can conceal the truth of these grain patterns: this is wood that served for decades in a Sicilian bottega. It bears the marks of woodworms, the scorching of the Mediterranean sun, and stains of natural oils. Instead of ending up in ashes, it has been elevated into urban geometry.

The Metamorphosis: Study and Matching

To become this skyline, it was not enough to simply glue pieces of wood together. A profound chromatic and material study was required:

Tonal contrasts: I played upon the natural shades of the wood, from the burnt brown of the most ancient essences to the honey-blonde of the younger ones, creating depth and perspective.

Visual rhythm: Each "building" is a unique piece, cut to defy verticality. The soaring peaks recall the skyscrapers of a modern metropolis, yet the matter they are made of speaks of centuries-old traditions.

The Night Sky: I rest upon a dark base, a void that heightens the physicality of the wood. Those light grains you see above are not mere decorations, but strokes of light simulating clouds or trails of urban energy, crafted to bring movement to a static composition.

Do i need new layout?

Hi guys,

I live in a real small room. Its fine when i sleep and chill alone. But twice a week i need to fold out my bed to be able to sleep with my girlfriend. Then here stuff needs to be stored under the desk to even be able to sort of walk in the room, if you even can call it walk.

Also, when i just sleep and study alone here i feel i am not using the small space to the potential. I cant even use the bottom shelfs next to my bed. So i put everything on my desk and then need to move it all to use it.

Also I like to sit in my bed and be able to watch out of the window. The second thing, I have 2 big drawers under my bed. I need to be able to open these.

Last thing, my door cant fully open now because of the small closet. The airflow is real bad in the room so i would like to be able to open it a little bit more.

Do you guys have any tips how i can improve this? Also part of my room is a sloped roof :(

Edit: I got responses already, great! Any other idea is welcome :)

Bed base - 100cm x 200cm

Bed full - 160cm x 200cm

Desk - 120cm x 70 cm

Small closet - 35cm x 35cm

Storage rack - 60cm x 27cm

Storage combined - 120x 27cm

Bedroom advice

Hey everyone!
I’m looking for some advice on how I can improve my bedroom. At the moment, I feel like it’s quite empty and doesn’t really feel lived-in.

The loft is currently being used for storage. I had my bed up there when I was younger, so I’m wondering whether I should move it back up. If I do, what would you recommend putting underneath the loft? I use the room for sleeping, relaxing, studying, and storage.

I added the cork board under the loft to bring in a bit more colour, but I’m not sure what else I should do.

I’d also like to do something with the wall beside the ladder, whether that’s painting it, adding some artwork, or something else. I’m not really sure what would work best.

I’m also not a huge fan of my current lampshade, so I’d appreciate any suggestions for what I could replace it with.

The window faces east, so it gets direct sunlight in the morning and softer light for most of the rest of the day.

The room is roughly 3 m × 4 m × 2.5 m (9.8 ft × 13.1 ft × 8.2 ft).

I really like colourful, cosy rooms with lots of artwork, patterns, warm lighting and natural materials. I’m not completely sure what aesthetic I’m going for yet, so I’m open to ideas.

Any ideas, suggestions, or even completely different approaches would be really appreciated!

I live with my parents and they own the house.

Struggling to find a working design for our dinning room

Our baby has recently started eating solids, and we've had to make space for a third chair at our dining table! While this was exciting, we quickly realized that our dining room is not really designed for too many people. We changed the dining table a couple of times, and even tried a round one, but the place still seems clunky... Even worse, when we have guests it's almost impossible to go around the table to find more seating.

We considered removing the wall between the dining room and the kitchen, but that would be a rather complex project since the wall is load-bearing. We've had two other ideas based on what we've seen from Daniel's videos:

- adding benches along a couple of walls, though the radiator below the window makes this awkward.

- replacing the dining table with some sort of wall mounted breakfast bar (perhaps L-shaped)

We still have these two large IKEA Metod (I believe) wall cabinets behind the door, which are now full. (In fact I'm often working from one of these cupboards nowadays, as I've been having some back pain and had to try standing more...)

Ideally we want the space to be suitable for hosting small dinners, working from home, and storage. This might be a big ask!

We'd appreciate any input on this!

Need help figuring out the layout before buying this flat

I’m considering buying this apartment but I’m struggling with the layout and would love some ideas!

I’d like to keep the kitchen + living room as they are, as I really like the space.
I’d also prefer to avoid major renovations or moving lots of walls/utilities.

My main needs are:
Large master bedroom
Guest bedroom
Two separate workspaces, as we both work remotely

The part I’m really struggling with is the windowless space between the two bedrooms, which is currently a walk-through closet. Could this be turned into something useful, perhaps one of the workspaces? Would glass partitions/internal windows help bring in some light?

Basically, I’m looking for creative but realistic ways to improve the layout without completely redoing the apartment. Any ideas would be hugely appreciated!

New apartment, need help with small and narrow study+guest room!

Hi from Norway!

We just bought a new apartment in Oslo and have a second bedroom here, really small in size, that we are hoping can be used as our main study area and as a guest bedroom when we have family or friends over.

Here are the main challenges and constraints we are facing:

- We have to be able to fit a work desk PC setup (doesnt have to be big, but not tiny either)

- We have to be able to fit an ergonomic chair with that desk

- My fiancee plays the piano, so we have to fit a 130cm wide by 30cm deep electric piano too.

- We have to fit either a sofa bed, day bed, or normal single bed in the room, so guests have a place to sleep. The bed can just be a single bed.

- The ergonomic chair needs enough room to swivel and move a little bit around while working, so it does not feel too tight. When we have tried to fit both a bed, desk and chair in the room, with the desk on one long wall and the bed against the other, we have found there to be very little room left and a little difficult to get in and out of the chair.

- Some storage options around the room would be nice

- We have an amazing window and nice view of the town square and do not want to block it with a piano or a computer screen

Apart from that, we have a decent budget and do not mind spending on good solutions, but obviously we do not want to overspend either.

**The last picture was how the realtor designed the room (as a second bedroom) when we went for the viewing before purchasing the apartment. It obviously doesnt work for us because that desk is way too small for our PC workstation.

Would appreciate any tips, ideas, or suggestions!

Small Studio Appartment

Looking to find a good layout for this rented studio. There's a twin-size bed, a small couch, a square desk and a round dining table furnished in it now. What should I do?

Help! - Please Fix our Living Room

We have a 23.6 square meter living room and we have played with some colour, mainly greens and browns. The north east corner where the sofa is located has views out over the deck and forest, which will only get better when our new single pane windows are installed. We want to keep the sofa, chair, and tables.

Our problem, we think, is the vast ~4.9m West wall. We're looking for suggestions on how to make the best use of the space and specifically that wall. Perhaps cabinets (?), but we would need to move the sofa forward and would lose the wonderful view through the north window.

No budget so have fun, we just can't change the structure of the room and walls. Help us Design Gods... as you can see we are design challenged. Love your YT channel BTW

My awkward shaped bedroom

my Bedroom is a very awkward shape and very large. I cannot get more furniture pieces or take away any of them. My dresser must stay where it is. I want to rearrange my room so that my desk and bed are not so close together, as the space between my desk and bed has always been very close.

I have had my bed on the long wall and moved my desk to where the nightstand is currently, but you run into the same issue, and it makes the room feel even tighter.

What are some creative ways to arrange my room?

dimension wise, each long indent (in the curve) is about 5 feet long, and the long wall is about 12 ft long from each edge of the door.

I have a queen-sized bed, nightstand, desk, chair, and dresser that must fit in my room and still allow for floor space.
