ACRRM 2027 Intake 1 – Anyone else starting? Question about Year 1 hospital training

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently accepted an ACRRM 2027 Intake 1 training position in WA and was wondering if there are any other upcoming ACRRM registrars here. It would be great to connect and support each other throughout training.

I also have a question regarding the training pathway. I’m currently employed as an RMO with Royal Perth Bentley Group, and my contract runs until January 2028. Since I’ll remain in this accredited hospital position during 2027, will this hospital year count as my Year 1 ACRRM hospital training, with community GP training commencing after I finish my RPBG contract? I really want to continue with RPBG until 2028 and can get the paeds/ OG/ ICU rotations which are mandatory for the training.

Has anyone been in a similar situation, or can current ACRRM registrars share how this works? Will they allow us to complete the hospital rotation in MM1 location.

Thanks in advance, and feel free to comment or send me a message if you’re also starting ACRRM in 2027!

Anyone else sick of ticking CPD boxes instead of actually learning?

FACEM, background in retrieval/prehospital/expedition medicine. Tired of the usual CPD circuit — conference rooms, forgettable sim days — so I’ve started building CPD delivered in austere/expedition settings (ski touring, remote diving), where human factors and decision-making under pressure aren’t hypothetical.
Of note, this is not expedition medicine. It’s the CPD we need in challenging environments!

Mapped to ACEM and ACRRM, with flexibility to align to other college requirements where needed. First trip’s ski touring in Kyrgyzstan (Mar 2027), dive-based options coming after.

Not here to hard-sell — genuinely curious if this resonates with anyone else. Happy to send a short overview of the framework to anyone interested, no obligation.

Which option is better

I am currently a doctor in the UK finishing my FY2 year. I currently have two general stream offers for PGY3, one of them is from Bayside health (likely peninsula hospital) and the other ones is from Monash health. Bayside I will be able to start from September onwards and Monash Health only starts at November. I currently finish my job in the UK end of July. For both jobs, I plan to live in central around South Yarra/CBD. I am contemplating which one to choose. For Bayside advantage is I can start earlier and it will be a direct train. However, for Monash the issue is that it is a later start but I have heard it is a better hospital and easier commute from central Melbourne.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Specialty registration

Hi everyone,

Trying to understand specialist registration in Australia. If I get Specialist Registration with conditions throught the expedited pathway, how long does the registration last for before I have to move to Australia and get a job offer?

For context : No imminent plans of moving but family is in Australia so want to keep options open.

Any advice/personal experience would be really helpful. Thanks!

I’ve given up the idea of med school and looked into radiotherapy?

I’ve rlly wanted to become a doctor but realised that I don’t the work ethic and strong positive mindset to get me thru endless years of studying.

my parnets aren’t really keen on me studying nursing but we do respect their commitment to their work and I’m not sure how I would handle patients (when facing violence etc). looking into radiotherapy any opinions about their work and responsibilities?

Looking for experiences from orthopedic surgeons in Australia

I’m looking to hear from fellow orthopedic surgeons about what it’s like to work in Australia.

1)What’s your day-to-day work like?

  1. Do most of you work in public hospitals while also seeing your own patients in private practice?

  2. What are the opportunities in arthroplasty, sports and spine surgery?

  3. Is there currently a shortage of orthopedic surgeons, or is the job market becoming more competitive?

  4. Anyone from Europe here?

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences—both the positives and the challenges. Thanks in advance! 🙃

Int med student trying to understand the fastest realistic pathway into the Australian medical system- am I overestimating how hard it is?

Hi! I'm currently applying for an mbbs in Malaysia. Did some reading and found that applying for the standard pathway with 2 years of HO experience + taking your amc 1 exams as an MO gives a sensible chance at securing a job, as many regional/rural hospitals are in need of such posts; bonus if you have many experience in a specific specialty (eg ER) with higher demand. It also suggests that I can complete my amc2/wba once I'm in aus as a RMO.

However, I've also heard many contradicting (and alarming) news that the Aus market is getting saturated following the UK's new laws. People saying you don't stand a chance if you haven't completed amc 2. 'An IMG, amc 1 applicant, and didn't graduate with a UK/Irish degree? Forget trying to get into the system at all.'

While the time I try to apply for the Aus market is in 8+ years, I'm beginning to worry about my future career as my biggest working priority is to work abroad asap + specialise there, preferably Aus as it seems to be the most ideal market as of now. But will I be shooting myself in the foot for not graduating in the western market (albeit drown in student debt); possibly ending up 'locked' in Malaysia's scary working conditions + salary?

I know the healthcare system can look very different 8 years from now, but with the current patterns will Aus end up with the same fate as the UK?

As of now, my biggest dilemma is whether I'm overstressing and that there will be a way into the system without spending years trying, or suffering financially by graduating overseas will be worth the job security.

I'll really appreciate any real-life experiences anyone is willing to share, or if they've gone through the pathway and made it to the other side.

Thanks so much!

Dealing with first trimester at work

I’m currently 7 weeks and starting to feel very sick most of the day. I can barely stomach any food so I’m also feeling a bit lightheaded, and have noticed my temper is shorter and I feel more “ditzy”.

I moved to QLD from VIC so I don’t get all my sick leave ahead of time - meaning I only have 3 days paid leave.

I’m expecting symptoms to keep getting worse, obviously I don’t want to tell people I’m pregnant yet - especially as I’m applying for training for next year.

Does anyone have any strategies to deal with this without having to sacrifice too much time off work. Obviously will see GP for antiemetics but otherwise I don’t know what to do

Hi! I’m just wondering if any Aussie gp’s would be able to help me obtain a medical certificate. Willing to pay whatever and prove my health records. I’m very desperate.

Please pm me

Moving to Aus

Hello Reddit,

My partner and I are talking about moving to Australia, he is originally from Tasmania and Im an MD, PhD from the university of Copenhagen, Denmark. Here I’m working on becoming a specialist in cardiology but not a specialist yet. If I move to Aus ill have to start over and it will take me 5-7 additional years to become any kind of specialist.
Looking for other opportunities for MDs in aus. Any suggestions for a person who is not registered with AHPRA?

Thanks in advance 🍀🙏🏼

AMC or other pathways

Hi everyone,

I have just finished my document verification, but I’m having some doubts about whether pursuing the AMC pathway is worth it for my situation. I would love to get some honest advice or hear from anyone with a similar background.

Here is my situation:

I am a resident in Australia with no financial pressure to work immediately.

I have a gap of more than 3 years.

My only clinical experience is my internship back home.

I have a young child, so work-life balance is a priority.

Given the long gap and minimal experience, is it realistic to pursue AMC exams and secure a job? Or would it be wiser to look into alternative career paths in healthcare? If you transitioned to another field, what did you choose?

Thank you so much in advance for your insights!
