Zukunft Rechtsmedizin

Hallo!

Rural generalist medicine

Hey everyone!

Can anyone tell me a bit more about Rural Generalist Medicine in Australia? From what I understand, it seems to be a rather unique specialty/pathway.
Is it basically an advanced form of emergency medicine combined with general practice and hospital medicine, or is that an oversimplification?

I’m particularly interested in the procedural side. For example, would a Rural Generalist with the appropriate surgical training actually perform procedures such as an emergency appendectomy, or would that generally still be transferred to a larger hospital? What about things like C-sections, anaesthesia, fracture management, chest tubes, etc.?

Maybe someone can write some things about his or her daily work life 🍀

Memory of a med student

Imagine it’s one day in August 2015.

You wake up in a house near PAK’nSAVE, and it’s so cold that you can see your breath. But your medical elective is calling, so there’s no time to stay in bed. A quick hot shower, a good New Zealand coffee, and you’re ready to go.

You head down Heretaunga Street West and arrive at the hospital. And then there are the people. Everyone is so incredibly friendly that you end up having such a good eight-hour day that you almost don’t want to leave.

On the way back, you grab something from Burger King or BurgerFuel and enjoy it in the garden, because the sun has finally come out a little.

Of course, you could have cooked at home. Your host family had already prepared plenty of food for you. But after two weeks, they left you alone in the house and travelled to Australia for five weeks.

Think about that for a moment.

You’re a 26-year-old medical student from Germany. You didn’t know these people before you arrived. And they trusted you enough to leave you alone in their house for five weeks while they went to another country.

Isn’t that just incredibly nice?

Unfortunately, there was one small problem: you had forgotten to pack enough underwear. So your mother back in Germany had to send you some through DHL Express.

My 26-year-old self had such an amazing time there. The winter was perfect: cold mornings, fresh air, cosy houses, good coffee, and incredibly friendly people.

It’s one of those memories that just sticks with you.

End of story 🙂

Thanks for reading.

Japanese health system 🇯🇵

Hey guys!

I’m a German doctor and I’m interested in how healthcare systems work around the world.

Since I’m also a big fan of Japan, I was wondering how the Japanese healthcare system actually works. Are you guys generally happy with it?
I’ve read that you don’t really have general practitioners/family physicians in the same way we do in Germany, and that people often just go directly to a clinic, wait for a while, and then get treated.
Is that actually how it works? What is your experience with the system? I’d be really interested to hear how it works in everyday life, how you choose where to go, and whether you’re generally satisfied with the quality and accessibility of healthcare.

It would be fantastic to hear some perspectives from people living in Japan!
Thank you so much, and all the best from Germany

Hey guys!

I visited Rotorua(New Zealand) back in 2015 and was a regular visitor to the local DunkinDonuts store.
Did anyone try the nespresso pods ? Are they worth it ?

Ted Danson is awesome 👏

I’m currently rewatching CSI, and this might be an unpopular opinion, but I think Ted Danson did a fantastic job. I know a lot of fans preferred the earlier seasons and missed Grissom, but Danson really made the role his own. His portrayal of D.B. Russell brought a different kind of leadership—calm, thoughtful, and empathetic—which fit the show surprisingly well. I genuinely enjoyed the seasons he was in.

P.S in Germany the original series is called CSI Vegas since season 12

Las Vegas for first timers 🇩🇪

Hey everyone!

I’m pretty sure this is one of the most frequently asked questions here, but I’ll ask anyway.
I’m currently rewatching CSI, and it’s really making me want to visit Las Vegas for a few days—do a bit of gambling, watch some shows, and just experience the city.
Unfortunately, my wife isn’t enthusiastic about the idea at all, so I’m looking for arguments to convince her.
For someone who thinks they wouldn’t enjoy Las Vegas, what are the must-see things? What surprised you the most? Is there enough beyond the casinos to make it worthwhile for someone who isn’t into gambling?

All the best from Germany 🇩🇪

Edit from Wednesday 11:23 am:

Thank you so much for all your answers! Really appreciate it

Gehalt Weiterbildungsassistent

Danke! 🍀

Am I disillusioned about New Zealand?

I visited New Zealand twice, in 2007 and again in 2015, and I’ve been thinking about those trips ever since. I had an amazing time there. I remember people wearing shorts in the middle of July, everyone seemed incredibly friendly, the coffee was excellent, travelling with InterCity buses was easy, the North Island felt vibrant, and even as a doctor I got the impression that patients generally respected and appreciated their GPs. Overall, life just felt more relaxed and easy-going.

On the other hand, whenever I read about New Zealand these days, I keep seeing stories about doctors leaving the country, unaffordable house prices, extremely expensive groceries, increasing drug and alcohol abuse, and rising violence.

So I’m wondering: am I just looking back through rose-tinted glasses, or has New Zealand really changed that much over the last decade?
I’d be interested to hear from people who live there or have lived there recently. How do you see the current situation?

PS: ChatGPT corrected some sentences 😎

EDIT:

Thanks to everyone for the positive and negative replies. I know that visiting as a tourist gives you a very different perspective than actually living there, which is exactly why I wanted to hear from locals.

I’m a German doctor. I previously worked in orthopaedic surgery and I’m now retraining to become a GP. While I still enjoy living in Germany, I’m also keeping an open mind about opportunities abroad if things continue to become less attractive here.
New Zealand has always been one of the places I’ve considered, so I really appreciate everyone sharing their honest experiences—both the good and the bad. 🤘
