HORRIBLE experience with Travis at Inked Expression in Chattanooga

I recently had a horrible experience with Travis? (i think ended up going to Damon now that i think back. i never got a name, just a phone number sent to me) from Inked Expression in Chattanooga on the 4th of July and wanted to share it with others.

Whether this will advise others who go or others who plan to get back dermals, I feel it is good to know. I went to them to get back dermals on the 4th of July. After a few chaotic cycles of calling to get an appointment together, which I take responsibility for, but I now see it as a possible sign that I shouldn't have gone through with it.

There wasn't really any conversation had or jewelry offered until his second co-worker came. He just showed me two studs and asked if they were nice. I just agreed, and he put them on the table.

About five minutes later, his co-worker asked me what color I wanted. I said I wasn't shown nor knew of the options. He gave me a case, and I picked some out similar to ones he had shown me. I relaxed again as we waited to begin.

The first time he tried, I asked about the pain, and he assured me it's the usual pinch, but the pressure was the worst part, which went along with what I had researched. What followed was nothing like we discussed, and the disregard that followed also still sits with me the next day. I brushed off the pain at first, or at least tried, but it did not feel right. I felt like the anchor stripped twice on my skin with no pause as he kept trying to twist and anchor it. I even felt a rough tugging under my flesh, which made me cry out, but he just brushed me off and said I could take it.

I continued to voice the pain, tightness, etc., to no avail. He kept going. When he stopped and swore, I asked if everything was okay. He told me everything was okay while I actively felt him pinching my back and repeatedly dabbing at what I knew to be blood on my back. It wasn't until the other artist asked him, 'Did it come out?' that he confirmed it. The entire process was about three to four minutes of pain dismissed as he tried to stop the bleeding. He tried again, the exact same piercing.

I said I didn't think I could do it, and again, he said I could take it and it would be okay. The second time was just as awful, if not worse. He said we would have to go a bit deeper this time. This quite possibly played into the issues, but again, it wasn't voiced to me. There were other customers in this time, and I tried to take it better, but once again, nothing but pain and almost the same amount of time.

Soon, I felt that pinching motion again, and the dabbing had returned. It had started bleeding again, and it still hurt. Once again, but more directly, I asked him, 'I am bleeding, aren't I?' He admitted it then.

I followed up with 'Does this happen every time?' which I already knew the answer to. He said no, it was not. We did not continue after that. I would say we both agreed this time, as I was not keen to continue after the first attempt in the first place. I feel that the presence of others was the only reason I was actually considered and listened to this time, compared to the first attempt. Or maybe he didn't take it or me seriously until the second failure, but my point still stands. In both cases, I didn't cry, but I cried out and writhed several times, and my hands were shaking after each attempt. My pain tolerance is above average, so I knew something was not right. In the end, we could not go through with it.

I didn't get a band-aid or aftercare despite still having a hole in my lower back, even though I was actively bleeding twice during the process. The marker was still on my back when I left as well.

I still tried to be polite and offer a tip for the inconvenience of trying to set my appointment up and taking me as a client, which he denied. He also offered a different style of dermals, which I said I would consider but would most likely not do today. I already felt pain in my back, and I truly did not feel comfortable going to him again. Mind you, he had attempted the same piercing twice consecutively. I am still in pain today and do not know how the hole will heal.

He later claimed that this had never happened before and was a result of the new set of jewelry they had purchased. This could be true, but the lack of regard was also my issue. So something wasn't right, but he continued to charge on at my expense?

I am quite disappointed because I have gone to them in the past, hence why I was comfortable returning, but I truly regret coming. These experiences were night and day in comparison. I will not jump to say it was racially motivated, but I left feeling rather dehumanized and vulnerable. My back is still in pain, and the hole has yet to heal or close up.

I am considering if I want to report this or not, because the experience felt rather unprofessional, despite how understanding I was trying to be. It is only with further reflection as I returned home that I noted all my issues with the events.

Again, I would not recommend returning to them, or at least being steadfast and direct with your concerns and issues, as I felt ignored when I attempted to do the same. I may try another place in the future, but this experience will sit with me for quite a while.

Piercing and Pregnancy

Hello! I am a body piercer, and we all know not to get new piercings while pregnant or breastfeeding. But what about giving piercings while pregnant?

Where I live, I would likely be able to get preventative leave paid at 90% of my salary because of exposure risk to pathogens just like nurses do. Altough for nurses they usually get reassigned to different tasks that dont put them at risk. I would be more than hapoy to be reassigned but it's not something my shop will be able to do most likely as we already have front desks. I love my job, but right now my priority is keeping me and baby safe. Have any piercers here take leave during pregnancy? A coworker of mine decided last year to only reduce her hours and was reassigned to other tasks at around 6 months as a personal choice but I think if I'm getting the opportunity to have the preventative leave I would do it.

Bump on lip keeps forming

Hi! There has been this bump that keeps forming AND popping whenever my hoop moves. Is there a way to get rid of it?? I am getting a little concerned. I cleaned my piercing regularly so I'm not fully sure how it formed. I have had the piercing since early January and got hoops at the end of april/ start of May. And it has been fine since then.

is it valid to tell someone you are seeing that you don’t want them to get a piercing?

so this guy i’m seeing told me he wanted to get an eyebrow piercing sometime soon and he isn’t sure bc his parents are strict so he prob won’t do it BUT is it wrong if i tell him that i prefer that he doesn’t get that piercing bc i’m not a big fan of them and that im worried what my parents would think if we got together? we’re going on our second date tmr and i haven’t known him for very long which is why i’m unsure if i have the right to tell him that. but from what i know, he is more than just interested in me and actually likes me (he told a friend of mine who is also his friend).

Worried about being creepy to my piercer

Please read this, it would really easy my anxiety.

Maybe this is weird, im autistic and dont really know how to have a filter when talking to people. He’s done all 8 of my piercings, including nipples. I feel very comfortable with him but im worried im in the shop too much. I used to go troubleshooting like once or twice a month but i never went there without reason.

They do lives on TikTok and ive been there commenting and saying hi and stuff, leaving little clues to who i am (we have kind of a running joke that ive done so many eyebrow piercing because i refuse to let it go) and we chat when im there. Ive gotten free stuff from there and repierced for free, and ive been wanting to apply for an apprenticeship later. Do you think im too much, or do they like me? Im really worried

Question, lot of piercings relatively short period of time

I started my journey roughly 3 years ago. And now have 100 piercings. Normally I get 4 at a time. Roughly a month apart.
Before you judge. I pay close attn to what my body is telling me. Take care of my piercings religiously. And have had no adverse side effects. Have a great relationship with my piercer.
Question is, after getting new piercings, other ones seem to heal better. Is there any science behind this. Or am I just an anomaly?

Angel fang piercing

Hello everyone!! I’ve had my angel fangs for about 2 weeks now it’s surgical steel curved barbell external threading, this is my second time getting them done, my right side is a bit painful and sensitive while my left is very comfy.
My first time getting them pierced I had problems with the right side developing a puss jewel, I definitely am going to consult my piercer just hoping to get an opinion before hand, my piercer is 50min-1h away so can’t really get up there whenever
I clean them once in the morning, once at night and let water run down during a shower (and patting dry after) or if I eat anything messy, just cleaning with the saline provided by my piercer
I have knocked the right side once or twice but no yanking or rough pulling, I haven’t noticed any discharge from the piercing just the regular healing crustys

piercing help?

i got my nipples pierced at dogstar in durham and the piercer has been rude to me about being only 5 minutes late and now i don’t want to go to her for my checkup appointment she made me reschedule. i know it seems like an overreaction but it’s a sensitive area for me, im really uncomfortable by showing that area to non-intimate partners or being by myself and her coldness made me super uncomfortable during my appointment and then when i came back too. i want to just get them checked up on by clarity or another reputable shop but is that against typical standards? any shops in durham you’d recommend?

Too many healing piercings at once?

I was not allowed to get piercings before I turned 18 and since I have turned 18 I've kinda been on a frenzy of getting new piercings. I currently have 12 (10 new, I had my lobes pierced as an infant) since I turned 18 in October of last year and I got my first piercing (my tongue) a few days after I turned 18. My tongue is fully healed and I have 9 currently healing.

I really tried to take a break after I got my top and bottom navel done as well as my second lobes and two helix piercings (that were supposed to be vertical helixes but I'll get to that) to let them fully heal before any more but I have always wanted a septum piercing and they had an apprentice session about 2 months since my last piercings so I figured it would be ok.

However, I went in for a consultation about my vertical helixes and found out that when I asked for two vertical helix I was instead given two Regular helix. I went in for this consultation two days before I had my appointment to get my septum pierced by the shops apprentice and I reached out to the owner and she was very helpful. She refunded me the money and said that I could get my vertical helixes re-pierced on the other ear at no charge. When I went in today to get my refund they said that they could give me my two vertical helixes today. I am an impulsive person so I said yes knowing that wasn't my plan so now I have 3 new piercings within 3 days. (I tipped my piercer 50% of what it would have cost if I had to pay ofc)

I have put myself in the shame corner for this because I knew that wasn't a good idea and I wanted to schedule my vertical helix appointment for a few months in the future but I changed my mind on a whim.

I now have 9 piercings healing and I just want some advice on if this is a death sentence or if this will just significantly slow down the healing process.

None of my piercings are having trouble healing at the moment.

The photo is of the dates I got my piercings done.

Nipple piercings

I've heard everything from "they don't hurt at all" to "they were the worst piercings of my life, and I had to take them out." I've had a couple of piercings before, so I'm not too worried about the initial pain. I'm more concerned about the healing time and how painful the recovery is.

I've had my tongue pierced, and it was manageable. I've also had my cartilage pierced, and honestly, that was the worst one for me pain-wise.

Is the pain really that bad? I know most people get both done at the same time, but I can't afford the overpriced studio jewelry for two piercings right now, so I'll probably get them a couple of weeks apart.

How long did it take for yours to stop hurting and being painful? Was the healing process really that bad? And is it comparable to tongue or cartilage. If not less painful/ annoying or more?

Do my eyebrow piercing holes look okay?

I’ve just took it out to clean the piercing and I’m wondering if the holes look healthy. I’m aware they’re red and I’ve had the redness ever since I’ve got it downsized and it sometimes itches and crusts a little. I’ve had it for about 6 1/2 months.

Piercing advice

Just got this about 5 days ago, I’m just anxious that something may be wrong with it? I haven’t had a piercing in a while so I may just be overthinking it lol. Does this eyebrow piercing look normal for day 5? The first photo is the first day I got it, the second two are from this morning

Salary question!

Hey guys so I am currently looking into body piercing as a career. My greatest skill at every job has been my ability to be very well liked and building regulars this makes me feel like having a job that is very public facing would be great for me and I have piercings love counter culture, body mod, taboo stuff whatnot… but I do need to know could I get to a point (even 5 years from starting or whatever) where I could be making 70k minimum yearly? I know it varies, I’m in Boston. I just feel like I need to if this could be a career or if it can only be a side gig which might work for me

Thanks guys!!

What do you miss being able to do before ur piercings?

I miss being able to sleep comfortably anywhere without a piercing pillow. I also miss wiping my face carelessly and putting shirts on without having to think about it. Good times.🥲

What's up with 12 gauge jewelry?

Ive had my midline tongue piercing for about a week and a half now. Piercer did not discuss with me what gauge he will be piercing me with. Only found out what gauge I received when I checked my receipt. ALL cute tongue jewelry is for 14 gauge. When my tongue is fully healed, is it safe for me to wear 14 gauge instead of 12? And do you guys know any online shops that sell cool 12 gauge designs? Ive tried Etsy, Amazon, Ebay and other websites and I swear everything is for 14 gauge only.

Experience with Anatometal clickers vs. Clickerino clickers?

Hoping to get some feedback on the hinge quality of Anatometal’s 14k/18k gold clickers vs. Clickerino’s 18k gold clickers. Client at the shop I work at wants to place an order for two clickers, however, I haven’t used Anatometal’s clickers in a very, very long time, and I recall Clickerino being hit or miss with their hinge strength. Does anyone have any experience with how well these clickers hold up?

Looking for feedback on piercing informations

Hi everyone!

Over the past few months, I've been working on Piercing Reference, a free website that aims to gather reliable information about piercings in one place—covering anatomy, jewelry, healing, aftercare, common myths, and more.

The goal isn't to sell anything or promote products. I just wanted to build an educational resource that anyone can use, while also giving the community a place to share knowledge and discuss piercing-related topics.

The project is still in its early stages, so I'd really appreciate feedback from this community. If you spot inaccurate information, missing topics, confusing explanations, or have ideas for improvements, I'd genuinely love to hear them.

You can check it out here:
https://piercingreference.org

Thanks for your time, and I hope some of you find it useful!

New Apprenticeship Flair Category

I’m adding an Apprenticeship flair, and I highly recommend using it!
We get apprenticeship questions almost daily, and while they’re all valid, they tend to get answered over and over. Using this flair will make it easy for everyone to find advice, experiences, and answers all in one place.
If you don’t see your question answered, make a post with the Apprenticeship flair! No judgment here, we’re all here to help.
We’re also hoping to put together an apprenticeship handbook/resource in the future, so stay tuned! 🫶🏻

Vacay!

Hey everyone! I’m the creator of this subreddit, and I just wanted to say how happy I am to see how much this community has grown. It’s become so much more active, supportive, and honestly just an awesome place to be.
One of our mods has access to Mod Mail, so if you’re wanting a flair from the weekly flair posts, make sure you message the subreddit there so he can review your work and get your flair added.
Having people label themselves as piercers, former piercers, apprentices, etc. really helps everyone know where advice and experience is coming from, and I think it makes the community even better.
I’ll be back in about a week or so, but I genuinely appreciate all of you. Watching this community grow into what it is has been amazing, and I can’t wait to see where we all take it next. 🖤
