Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

July 4th Participatory Parades?

A little late for this year, but where I used to live they would hold a parade that pretty much anyone could build a float or just decorate a vehicle/tractor/side by side, etc and we would then all join up and participate in the parade tossing candy to the kids.

Anything like that in this area? it was quite fun and, IMO, more fun than just watching a parade.

Anyone else see the Little Bird over 105 East bound just now?

It was only 100 foot over the road. Didn't hear anything until it was right in front of me

Update: nevermind, that was a Loach, not a Little Bird.

Anybody been tubing recently?

Thinking of hitting up the New River but I know water levels have been low due to the drought. Has anyone been down recently and how was it?

Dinner places - gluten free and vegetarian.

Have friends coming up need a place to take them to dinner. Should be simple, but we have some dietary restrictions.

One person is Celiac (gluten free, can't eat wheat at all), the other is vegetarian.

Any ideas around the Boone, Banner Elk..etc area? I know some restaurants used to be GF (Coyote?) but the new owners are not good about it.

Working at North Wilkesboro Speedway: Where would you stay and what shouldn’t I miss?

Hi everyone! I’d love some local advice.
I’m working an event at North Wilkesboro Speedway in July and will need to be at the speedway each day. Since lodging nearby is pretty limited, it looks like I’ll be staying about 45 minutes away regardless of which direction I go.
I’m less interested in finding the closest hotel and more interested in finding the best, memorable home base for the weekend.
I will have a little free time the day before and after work, so I’m looking for somewhere with a great atmosphere; whether that’s a charming mountain town, good restaurants and coffee shops, scenic drives, or a place that’s simply enjoyable to spend time.
I’ve looked at places around Boone, Blowing Rock, West Jefferson, Lenoir, Cajah’s Mountain, and even Winston-Salem, but I don’t know the area well enough to know what I’d actually enjoy most.
If you were me:
● Where would you stay?
● Why that town over the others?
● And what would you make sure not to miss while I was there?
Thanks! I’d love to hear what the locals would do.

Water Restrictions -> Anyone know the actual story?

What was the actual reason for them to implement these? I read that “public works recommended” them, but I know that Boone metro Council ignores them as its normal course of business, so I am wondering what the truth is?

Yes, I know there is a ”drought” in the state, but what caused Boone to do this? There is not a unique lack of water in Boone by any measure. The New River, which is both where Boone gets its water and discharges its waste water flows on down hill. All our springs seem to be flowing again (yes, some were dry this spring, but there was no water restriction then.)

My mom says that they are putting the water limits in place to be in solidarity with the Colorado River, which seems both dumb as hell and on point.

I think that the reasonable explanation for the restrictions would be that Boone‘s growth has exceeded their water purification (or sewage treatment) capacity and they are implementing this as a ”fix” so they don’t have to spend money just yet on a real fix or, gasp, addressing the public. This way they can institute the restrictions, wait for App to object, then make App pay for the upgrades that are actually needed because the town council, being bought and paid for already by developers and their families interests, sure as shit doesn’t plan anything until they get their next bribe.

Side note: Part of how to tell some Boone Council BS is that the measure is unenforceable as passed and will be struck down in court if anyone tries. A lawyer woulda told them that, I think. Typically when Boone council wants to do something, they have the law written by a professional and it stands. When they are being shady, they pass some badly written crap that either gets struck down or walked back. I wouldn’t be surprised if they walk this back after the court cases are filed, assuming that timeline meets whatever their actual motivation is. They can always just say, “Oh yeah, it rained.”

All were on the highway towards the bottom of the hill and heading south. One jumped in the car female very sweet hound. The other hound and other dog went into the woods.

Dogs almost hit by cars driving by. We took the hound to the vet but she is not chipped if this is your dog please DM.

Made a thing because I was tired of opening Instagram to find out what’s happening in Boone

Okay so I’ve been working on this for a few weeks and it finally feels real enough to share.

It’s called 91.7, left917.net. Basically a one-page feed for everything happening in Watauga, Ashe, and Avery. News, weather alerts, road conditions, all in one quiet place. Pulls from Watauga Democrat, Ashe Post & Times, Mountain Times, High Country Press, BPR, App State News, NWS, NC DOT, and Blue Ridge Parkway. No social media required.

I built it because I love this place but I hate that knowing what’s going on here means scrolling Instagram. So this is the opposite of that. No algorithm, no ads, no signup. Just what’s actually happening.

Working on adding events from the venues I keep going to like Boone Saloon, AMB, Lost Province, Booneshine, Todd Mercantile, and Huzzah Books. Library programming too. Long way to go but it’s a start.

If you check it out, tell me what’s missing. I want this to be the thing people actually use.

Named after the empty slot on the Boone FM dial. There’s a whole story behind the name but I’ll save it for whoever asks.

Another Post Dogging on Pineapple Planet Wilderness Guide (AI Gravity Falls looking guy)

Cannot even use REAL pictures of the beautiful place we live in. Constant AI slop and the local business are complacent because it’s publicity online. The character is slop, the fake AI drone footage is slop, we encourage this for some reason?? If this page was to become critical of the local businesses it’d be labeled AI slop and stamped out as fast as it came about. Make it make sense. When did the world stop making posters, films, advertisements with real artists. RIP Cheap Joes.
